i have finished my purple cloth weaving wise and begun and finisher my second piece, herringbone twill with rags. these rags are from commerical mills when they remove the original selvedge from blankets so it prevents these lovely strips of weaving going to waste. i have found the busy-ness of the rags and the spacing means that the pattern often gets lost, but it is there, and is more noticeable in some places than others. i also wet finished my first piece and i am trying to get some teasels to have a go at fulling it before using it as fabric for a purse and bag. i am so pleased the selvedges flattened after weft finishing and the whole cloth became softer after being washed. It was quite stiff and rough before wet finishing.

the rag herringbone i intended to follow a pattern for a rag oversized bag but everyone wants me to keep it as is and make it a rug instead. i am undecided because i really wanted a rag bag but it would make a lovely rug so maybe i need to get more rags so i can make a rag bag still.

i was also gifted this by a girl who visited the museum for my purple piece when i was taking it off the loom because "it is the bestest" which was very sweet of her.

the whole family was a treat, her grandma designed tapestries for mechanical looms in the 60s, 70s and 80s in China and the girl's father was interested in jacquard and dobby looms for translating data into weaving patterns as he works in computing and has apparently been long interested in the intersection of textiles and computing, explaining his school was lucky to get one of the first non-commerical computer driven sewing machines and how he was actually in a newspaper at the time using it.

i don't know what to do next as my contact for material costs hasn't replied so i will have to try use something i already own. it is also my birthday next wednesday (22nd) so i hope i get something textiles or fibre art related.
