āHurry! Thereās a pistol in the locker. Grab it and go!ā The womanās voice pipes in from a speaker aboveā¦or below. Or was it from your side? It seems to surround you, joining with the wailing alarms.
You move to comply with the womanās orders, still unsure why youāre doing so. But the pistol feels solid in your hands, more solid than anything has felt since you woke.
āGood, now go through those doors!ā
At first, you just stand there, unsure whether or not you should. What was this place, and who is this woman, and why should you follow what sheās saying?
But then you hear gunfire, and something snaps inside you, moving your feet before you even know whatās happening.
You move to the edge of the door, using it as cover to peer into the hallway beyond. Blood smears the floors. Thereās a body on the floor. They had been trying to make it to your room, but someone had shot them down. But who?
The woman from the speakers answers your question without you asking. āThey tried to make a barricade to hold the mechs off, but they were overwhelmed.ā
Mechs then.
It wouldnāt be the first time you had fought against some rogue VIās.
āShepard look out!ā
A shot whizzes past your ear, and you duck, crouching up against the barricade, gun between your legs.
You needed to focus or you were going to get shot.
Using every bit of brain that you can pull together, you peek over the top of the barricade, spotting the mech.
Unfortunately, it also spots you, and starts shooting in your direction. You duck down, wait for a break in the mechās onslaught, then whip back up and fire three bullets into its head.
Shepard: 1, Mech: 0
The woman does not give you any time to celebrate this small victory. āKeep moving; you need to get to the shuttles.ā
āWhere are they?ā You croak out the question, voice hoarse and unused, but if she hears you, she does not respond.
Fine, you think. Iāll find my own way.
You jump over the barricade and stop by the mech to grab a couple heat sinks from it. After sliding a fresh one into your gun though, you realize that you have nowhere to put the second. Youāre still in a hospital gown.
Regretfully, you leave the other, hoping that youāll find another along the way. And perhaps a change of clothes, also.
With a sigh, you stand and continue around the cornerābut you stop in your tracks as you see it.
The logo spans across the wall, harsh lines achingly familiar to you.
Cerberus. This is a Cerberus facility.
Sinking dread pools into your gut. You feel lightheaded.
Where the fuck were you? And what had Cerberus done?
