I really do think Alastor's gotten fond of them. As fond as a guy like him gets, anyway. He's used to them. He finds them entertaining. He'd probably snatch up their souls in a heartbeat and make them part of whatever weird family he's got going on with Husk and Nifty.
This scene's been analyzed to death, but I think what people have kind of glossed over is how frustrated he sounds. Alastor's panicked, and scared, and wounded, but he's also bubbling over with frustration and rage. He wants out so badly. And a cornered animal will harm itself and others to escape.
