So I want to build up my inner earth, long hidden tribes of people living in highly modernized post modern cities thoughout the earth mixed with fantastical land and creatures.. but I want to go realistic with the above the earth society. Things like deep sea, oil drilling, mining etc. It doesn't seem to jive with earth geology.
Feral: It doesn’t seem to jive with Earth geology because it doesn’t. People don’t live inside the Earth’s mantle. Alternatively, you might be thinking of cities underwater as you mention “deep sea.” People also don’t live there. But studying the tropes associated with modern interpretations of Atlantis could give you some ideas. Obviously, Journey to the Center of the Earth is quintessential, and you can learn more about the associated tropes here.
A word of warning: be careful with how you are presenting your underground people. Apparently some neo Nazis think the Hollow Earth idea is legit and use it to further their insane ideology.
Of course, if you are interested in creating an alien world with a hollow center, you could create that without having to justify it being Earth. Naboo from the Star Wars prequels doesn’t have a molten core but a sponge-like system of ocean and caves while still being very Earth-like on the surface. As with most of the worldbuilding of Star Wars, it doesn’t really work scientifically, but some fans made an attempt to explain it at least partially in the parody webcomic “Darths and Droids.”
Tex: Your instincts about jiving with earth geology are correct, and I would recommend heeding Feral’s warning about Nazi ideologies.
There’s plenty of material out there that mixes fantasy with realism (Alice In Wonderland comes to mind), so you’re entitled to some handwaving when it comes to creative freedom in terms of worldbuilding. Naboo, Journey to the Center of the Earth, Alice in Wonderland, Hellboy, Artemis Fowl (the books, specifically), and probably Star Trek and Star Wars (outside of Naboo) have all broached the duality of world concept.
Interestingly, this is a popular concept in Harlequin romance novels, particularly with the Magical Highlander and Vampire/Fairy subgenres. I don’t remember any titles off the top of my head, but it was interesting how many authors handled the psychological nuances of romance novels within fantasy genre limits.
Something that raises my attention is the juxtaposition of “tribes” and “cities”. Generally speaking, a given society is not both, due to the contrast of technological levels according to a modern perception of “city” - something that is usually dictated by population density and nomadic vs sedentary habits. This is a core topic of cultural anthropology, and very difficult to disentangle from the entire field; the best I could do, in this instance, is point you in the direction of reading material to bolster you research, as well as help you navigate away from racist ideologies capitalizing upon the misunderstanding of scientific principles.
I would, however, like to bring up the potential alternative of Dyson spheres, as well as the accompanying wiki about their use in fiction. It’s not a one-to-one if you’re firm about the idea about things like drilling and mining, but it would comfortably scoot many things into modern technological levels.
—Actually yes, after my grandfather Velasco on my father's side
When was the last time you cried?
—I am not sure, but probably recently. Some ghosts just have such tear jerkers of death tales.
Do you have kids?
—Not yet, but I think eventually Estella and I have plans for at least one some day
Do you use sarcasm a lot?
—Not as much as my brother-in-law. Sometimes I miss it and take him seriously
What's the first thing you notice about people?
—Their general vibe I get being around them….Though I wish it was whether they were living or ghost because that would make life so much easier.
What's your eye colour?
—A kind of reddish brown, but when using my magic it’ll brighten to more of a scarlet
Scary movies or happy endings?
—Happy endings all the way
Any special talents?
—I’ve discovered I’m great at accidentally creating all new undead beasts when I’m absolutely not meaning to do that
Where were you born?
—Honestly I don’t remember. I got separated from my family when I was pretty young and at this point that was nearly two centuries ago.
Do you have any pets?
—Not yet, but I am trying to talk Estella into us getting a drabbit
What sort of sports do you play?
—I have never been the sporty type
How tall are you?
—Pretty tall. Definitely taller than the average of humans…But I’m also taller compared to many other Avendiae too.
What was your favorite subject in school?
—Forbidden tomes….Mainly since those are where the dark magic spells are, and so they’re the ones that agree most with my magicris and don’t give me vertigo to perform.
What is your dream job?
—One where I can practice dark magic and show to others it’s not necessarily dangerous as it all depends on how it’s used….For instance, there is nothing dangerous about reviving my wife's dead house plants.

“Oh Beloved! I have the prettiest surprise from my chat with Nerine.”
Her melodious voice drew his attention from the book that laid before him on the table. Vasco slipped a bookmark into place with a smile. “Estella, surely you did not charm her out of yet another house plant.”
Estella chuckled, gently closing the door with her foot as her hands were indeed carrying a large potted plant. “There was no charm involved, I assure you. I simply told her it was a beautiful flower and she asked if I wanted one to bring home.”
Gracefully she brought the pot with its large, red wispy lily blossoms over to show it off with the largest smile upon her soft face. “Of course I had to say yes.”
“Is she aware of your track record with keeping them alive?” He chuckled, but then nodded at the plant. “Though I will admit, it is very pretty.”
“Oh she doesn’t need to know that, plus I have to say that is one of the benefits of being married to a necromancer.” She smiled before playfully reaching up to tap his nose. “As far as anyone knows, my flowers are always in perfect health because I am an excellent gardener.”
Vasco shook his head as he gently took the potted plant from her and set it upon his desk. “I have heard of the many scandals delicanters get themselves into, my love, but never have I ever heard of them being over flowers.”
Estella laughed before standing on her tiptoes to kiss his cheek. “Oh you know I’ve been a part of worse scandals.”
“Like marrying me?”
“Of course, you are my best and my favorite scandal. Not a day goes by that I think how happy I am that we eloped. My father be damned.”
Vasco sighed, giving her a quick kiss back. “I still wish we could have had the original wedding you had wanted…Perhaps then your father would not be under the impression that I stole you away.”
“It was his own fault…He knows where to find us if he ever comes to his senses. I am happy with you, with us, with our home.” She leaned back against him with a large smile. “And with my latest flower scandal.”
“You and your scandals.” He smiled, resting his chin on the top of her head. “I love you so dearly.”
And Tegumentes? I like the name because....tegu :3
Tegumentes are slightly inspired by tegus (tegu + gente from Spanish for people but tengugente didn’t roll off the tongue as well so the second g was swapped for an m).
They’re a reptilian bipedal species. Kind of inspired also by the Amazons of Greek mythology, they are more of a matriarchy with a tribal queen. The females do the hunting and defense while the males handle egg and child care.
However, unlike usual tegus the coloration is different. Males are bright blues and greens, very vivid coloration and the females are more drab browns and greys and smaller than the males which is why they have more of a camouflage advantage in the jungles.
For the most part, they eat fish but they’re not very picky if they catch or find other food. For the most part though, they’re peaceful unless they feel threatened.
Vasco has a special fondness for Tegumentes as part of his life they did help take care of him. Due to this friendship with a particular tribe of them, when he and Estella eloped, they had their queen perform their marriage for them.
Amurians are a bizarre species. They’re super intelligent and technologically advanced, compared to most beings in a fantasy realm. They for the most part live in a single mountain range where they have for generations mined crystals that they use in their technology and live in the caverns carved by their ancestors. They have a special fondness for genetic engineering as over the course of several generations, they have edited their own genome to make themselves better suited for the harsh environment they live in.
Appearance wise, they’re bipeds with cloven hooves, long tails, covered in thick fur. They have paw-like hands and a rather feline face but with spiral horns and two pairs of eyes. Their fur is snow white except for their assorted colored swirling stripes. They are all named after gemstones or other stones or precious metal and ore.
I remember when I originally designed them I wanted to come up with a sentient fantasy species that was undoubtedly uniquely my own creation and was not your standard "human but not" or "human but mixed with something else."
It's Leap Day, so tell me about a leap (a big decision, an impulsive action, a change in life circumstances, etc.) that your blorbo(s) have taken?
Hey Sleepy!
Let’s see…
For Vasco of Hidden Earth, probably deciding to go find his missing wife. Everyone was against him, saying she had just left him but he knew better than that, that she did truly love him back….So he does kinda go against everything he’s been trained on, including learning more about and how to control his natural dark magic abilities…leads to him rediscovering his birth parents, finally feeling confident in his abilities, and of course finding and rescuing his beloved Estella. So it works out for him.
For Martin of Tropical Storm, it would be when he grabbed and watched this mysterious disc that fell into his possession. It wasn’t his, he probably shouldn’t have done that, but he did, and it got him swept up into becoming part of a commando animal squadron at the zoo where he lives. As a penguin, he’s kind of a mismatch to the mammals and reptile on the team currently, but he’s finding his way of making it work…and honestly loving it. Best bad decision he’s ever made.
Okay, uhm... do your characters ever have the kind of quirks that someone nearby can be having a random conversation but stop mid-sentence to stare at them because of the quirk? What are said quirks?
Oh I'm sure I have many...usually that quirk is talking to themselves out loud and not realizing they're not completely alone
Probably the one to get the most looks though would be Vasco.
Vasco as the lone Necromancer where he lives, has a slight problem where ghosts/the dead talk to him...but non-necromancers cannot see the ghost, and Vasco 7/10 times can not always tell if he's talking to a ghost or a living being...So he has occasional chats with ghosts, sometimes tries to feed ghost animals, etc.
His wife is used to it and when she's around helps him differentiate between ghost or living.
