Mundaun
A darkness encroaches on the secluded settlement of Mundaun where our protagonist has returned after receiving a disturbing letter. His grandfather perished in a barn fire, however, the local priest urges him not to return home. It has been many years since he last spent time there with his grandfather, but resolved to see things with his own eyes, the protagonist heads up into the mountains.
It is apparent in the early moments of the game that something sinister is afoot in Mundaun. What may have once been an idyllic place is now home to dark mysteries and frightening nightmares. However, the game introduces these things at a leisurely pace. There is ample opportunity to explore: items are hidden throughout the environment, including coffee and tobacco which the player may take a moment to enjoy. There are very few people who inhabit the area, but all of them are somewhat haunting. Interactions with these few will always create more questions than answers. One girl in particular, Flurina, appears to be the most off-putting, but her presence is a welcome respite in the cruel mountainside village.
Players must remain vigilant for enemies while exploring, as spotting enemies can petrify you and make it harder to escape. For those with poor vision, the hand-drawn style of the game may inhibit their experience. Some clues may be hard to see, and as you scan the horizon to pinpoint what momentarily triggered the action indicator, they may prove frustrating to find again. There are also times when the game can be a bit unclear. Even though the hints are fairly obvious, the way they are displayed can sometimes make it harder to put things together.
All in all, Mundaun is a short horror game with a fair bit of charm. The scenery is pleasant, and while the monotone filter may not be for everyone, the lack of colour alters the atmosphere accordingly. While the scenery can be peaceful during the daytime, this changes once night falls, bathing the mountains and valleys in darkness. What was once tranquil becomes unsettling, and the increased number of monstrosities during the night makes it borderline frightening. If the protagonist survives the night, they are greeted with the relief of daylight basking the mountains again.
