yall ever notice how hideki ryuga looks like a lawlight love child.
tell me that's not a lawlight love child.
The anime really made a Hideki Ryuga romantic confession scene under the rain and expect the viewers not to connect it to Lawlight's rooftop scene

THIS is the THIRD chapter!
Author's Note: (9556 words):
Small Recap: (Light's P.O.V.):
I slammed the Death Note down onto my desk, the black leather cover smacking softly against the wood as my fingers drummed over the page. "I got it... I've just figured it out!" I murmured lowly, a smirk tugging at the corner of my lips as I turned to my computer and clicked it on.
Ryuk tilted his head with curiosity, wings rustling faintly. "Hmm?"
"How to find out the guy's name," I said coldly, fingers dancing over my keyboard as my eyes narrowed. "The one who was tailing me today."
I glanced up at the clock on my desk, its black numbers glowing against the darkening room. It read five twenty PM.
"Tomorrow's Saturday..." I murmured to myself with a faint smile, leaning back in my chair as a cold gleam flickered in my eyes. "I have plenty of time."
The Present (Now): (Your P.O.V.):
I lay on my futon, staring blankly at the ceiling. My room was dim, lit only by the dull green glow of my digital clock by the window. Seven o' three P.M. I hadn't slept at all. Even though I first closed my eyes around four thirty, I just... couldn't.
My mind was quiet, as always, yet thinking. Thinking endlessly about Kira. The victims. L. Light.
Light... He should have access to police information, shouldn't he? His father is the Chief of the NPA. It's not something students should be looking into, but... I was bored. And the idea felt mildly entertaining.
But... I'd have to deal with that creature if I called him. My eyes narrowed slightly in faint annoyance, imagining its wide olive eyes and grin watching me. Still... I reached over, grabbed my phone, and pressed the call button. Light was the only contact I had. When I'd asked Father for his number years ago, he didn't say a word. He never spoke to me. Calling him for anything would be useless.
The phone rang twice before Light answered, his calm voice coming through. "Hello? Y/n?"
"Light." I spoke plainly, staring at the ceiling with dead eyes. "I know you said, 'see you Monday,' but... am I able to come over for a favor?"
There was a pause before Light chuckled softly. "It's fine, but... what's wrong? You've never asked me for favors before."
"I couldn't sleep," I replied, voice monotone. "And I was bored."
Another quiet laugh left him. "It's only seven P.M.... and you were trying to sleep?"
"Since four thirty," I responded flatly. "I told you I was bored."
"Right... well, if you're that restless, sure," he said after a moment, sounding amused. "Come over. It's fine-, do you want me to pick you up?"
"No." I cut him off gently. "I'll walk." I hung up without another word, rolling off my futon. I didn't bother changing out of my pajamas: a black oversized T-shirt and loose black shorts. I didn't brush my hair either, leaving it unstyled and slightly ruffled. My skin was clean at least; I'd showered earlier. There was no need to do anything more.
The walk was quiet. Cool night air brushing my bare legs, streetlamps flicking by overhead. When I reached the Yagami house, I paused at the gate for a second, just staring at the front door. "I've seen it before," I thought. "But I've never actually gone inside."
I opened the gate and stood at the door before pressing the bell. Footsteps approached before the door slid open with a gentle clack.
A small girl with a big grin peeked out, she blinked up at me, my clothes, and tilted her head. Light's sister... Sayu. "Um... can I help you?"
"Y/n?" Light's familiar voice drifted from the staircase as he walked down, wearing a white long-sleeve shirt and jeans. His mother appeared from the kitchen behind Sayu, wiping her hands on her apron.
"Oh! Hello, dear!" she smiled warmly. "I didn't know Light invited a friend over tonight. Would you like anything to drink? Tea? Juice?"
I blinked at her, expression blank. "...No, thank you."
She nodded, still treating me like a proper guest. "Alright, dear. Make yourself at home."
Light gestured towards the stairs. "Come on up."
I slipped off my house slippers, stepping inside. Sayu watched curiously as I padded up the stairs behind Light, the quiet aroma of his mother's cooking drifting faintly through the hall.
Light's room was clean and organized, the smell of wood polish and faint pen ink in the air. I stepped inside and immediately noticed the creature standing behind Light's desk chair, its olive eyes locked onto him, grin never faltering. It didn't move, just hovered there silently, glaring at Light with hollow amusement.
I stood in the doorway for a moment, just staring at it. It stared back, blinking slowly, like it knew I could see it and found that funny. I shifted my eyes to Light instead, stepping inside.
Light closed the door gently, leaning against it with a small smile. He gestured for me to sit wherever I liked. "So... Y/n. What was this favor you needed?"
I sat down on the floor near his desk, resting my chin on my knee, eyes half-lidded and unbothered. "I want to see the police information on the Kira case."
His smile faltered slightly, eyes narrowing as his gaze sharpened with hidden calculation. "...That's... quite a favor to ask."
"I know," I replied calmly, staring back into his brown eyes with empty disinterest. "But I'm bored. You're the only one with access to the NPA through your father. I want to know what they know. And I want to see if there's anything worth thinking about in those files."
The creature behind him let out a low sound, like a soft chuckle. Its glowing eyes darted between us, observing quietly with a glint of anticipation.
Light's eyes narrowed faintly as he looked at me, arms crossed, leaning back against his desk. "...Why do you want it, Y/n?" He asked calmly, his tone laced with casual curiosity yet an undercurrent of calculation. "Why the sudden interest in Kira? You've been mentioning him quite often, recently."
I stared at him with half-lidded eyes. "Because it's interesting. Something to think about."
"Interesting, huh..." he repeated, watching my expression carefully. "You really want to see it that badly?"
I didn't respond, merely blinking slowly in his direction.
Light let out a quiet chuckle through his nose, turning away to look at his computer monitor, the glow of the screen illuminating his sharp features. "...You're always like this. It's like nothing fazes you... even now, asking for top-secret police files like it's the weather report."
I remained silent, watching him in return, unfazed by his scrutiny. I didn't care if he thought it was strange. I was bored. That was all.
Light leaned back in his chair, arms folding behind his head as he looked at the ceiling in thought. The creature behind him let out a small rumble, like a low laugh, but neither of us acknowledged it.
"...You're lucky, you know," Light finally said, turning his gaze back to me with a faint smile playing on his lips. "If it were anyone else, I'd say no. But... I'm curious too."
He turned to his keyboard, opening several hidden folders, clicking past password protections with practiced ease. "I want to see how the police view it... the Kira case. And what someone like you thinks about it."
His fingers paused above the keys. "Just don't tell anyone I let you see this, alright?"
I blinked once. "Who would I tell?"
His smile widened slightly in amusement, a soft chuckle escaping him as his brown eyes glimmered under the fluorescent desk lamp. "Good point."
He stood up from his chair, gesturing towards it. "Here." His eyes locked onto mine with quiet intensity. "Take your time."
I stood up and moved with silent steps towards his desk. The creature shifted slightly, wings rattling behind it as its glowing eyes followed me. I ignored it and sat down in Light's chair, knees pulled up to my chest again as I stared at the screen filled with data, photos, and reports.
Light stood beside me, arms crossed loosely as he watched me read, his expression unreadable. But I could feel it. The silent anticipation radiating from him, almost buzzing in the air.
He wanted to see what I would say.
And I... simply wanted something to occupy my mind.
I scrolled down through the endless rows of data, victims' mugshots flickering past my half-lidded gaze. The criminals... the patterns... it was about what I already knew so far. Their names, ages, times of death, causes. Heart attacks, cardiac arrests... But those accidents... illnesses... They hadn't realized it yet. The NPA and L... they didn't know he could kill in ways other than heart attacks.
Pathetic.
My eyes narrowed faintly. If L could do all that broadcast work to expose where Kira was, he must be working with the NPA... or at least getting information from them somehow. There was no way he could pull off something like that broadcast without access. Either way... he was close to them. Embedded in their resources like a parasite. Hm.
The police were thinking it too... that Kira might be a student. I scrolled down further with my knee to my chest, reading line after line. Weekdays between four P.M. and two A.M. The majority between eight P.M. and midnight. Weekends scattered from eleven A.M. to two A.M. If I were Kira, and I had school... I'd kill during my time off too. Nothing surprising there.
My eyes shifted lazily upwards as I reached the top of the page. The most recent victims. Six names. Six deaths. I blinked once.
"It seems Kira can also control someone's actions before they meet their end as well..." I muttered under my breath.
The screen glowed dimly on my face in Light's darkened room. Maasaki Shirami... an arsonist. Killed thirteen people in their homes. Cut his finger and drew a pentagram with his own blood before dying in his cell. My lips twitched faintly. Yadanaka... left a note.
A suicide note dripping in fear and desperation:
"Lord have mercy. Do what I can, I'll either be hanged or you know it, killed by Kira. I know about him. He's going to get me."
Most people would think he was acting of his own free will, driven mad by the fear of Kira. But I tilted my head slightly, noticing something no one else would. The first words of each line:
"L Do you know"
I hummed quietly in amusement. Getting L's attention, are you...?
I scrolled to the third victim out of the six. Yoda. Managed to escape from prison and get to a public toilet thirty meters away before collapsing dead inside. Interesting. Three victims who did something unusual before death. Three others who didn't.
Failed experiments and successful experiments. That was what this was.
"He's experimenting... testing... what else can he do, besides time and method of death...?" I thought silently, half-lidded eyes flicking from name to name. Kira... you're testing your limits, aren't you?
And you're watching. Waiting for results. You have police information, don't you...?
My eyes narrowed further, my mind piecing together silent conclusions. Light... that creature isn't the only one following you. That man... he's been tailing you for days now. So, Soichiro Yagami and his family are under surveillance... most likely along with others in the NPA.
Did Kira want this to happen?
If L is working with the police, he's the one who initiated these subtle investigations. The task force wouldn't investigate their own colleagues-, not if they wanted to keep their trust. No... L is forcing their hand. But Kira... Kira is forcing theirs right back.
"That's it," I muttered suddenly, the words escaping my lips.
Light, who had been leaning against his desk in silence, turned to look down at me with his sharp brown eyes. "What is?" he asked evenly, his voice calm but with that subtle undercurrent of curiosity he always carried around me.
I turned my head slightly to look up at him from his chair. "Kira wanted the task force to lose trust in L," I explained blankly. "That way... the police would quit the investigation altogether."
Light raised an eyebrow slightly, arms folding. "...You think that's his aim?"
I looked away at the glowing screen again. "Most likely. Though I doubt everyone would leave... Your father, for example... he seems strong-willed."
My eyes narrowed faintly in silent thought. "But if he lowers the number of people investigating him... it'll make it easier to find out who L is and eliminate him. Less variables. Less threats. Less eyes."
I hummed quietly, the corners of my lips twitching almost imperceptibly in amusement. "Interesting."
Light was silent for a moment, his expression carefully unreadable as he watched me. Then, finally, he let out a quiet, humorless chuckle under his breath. "You really are something else, Y/n."
I didn't respond, merely looking back at the screen with vacant eyes. My mind racing silently as my expression remained completely blank.
I felt his stare on me, heavy and analytical. He hadn't said anything in a while, simply watching as I scrolled back up to the top of the page. I rested my chin on my knee, blinking slowly.
"Light," I spoke suddenly, my voice calm and flat.
"Hm?" he hummed lightly in response; arms still folded across his chest.
"Do you know you've been tailed for the past few days?" I asked, my eyes remaining on the bright computer screen.
Light was silent for a moment before letting out a quiet exhale of amusement. "Yeah... I know," he admitted easily. "You noticed too?"
I tilted my head faintly, still not looking at him. "It wasn't hard to notice. The man is not exactly subtle."
Light chuckled under his breath, stepping forward to lean his hand against his desk beside me. "You're as sharp as ever, Y/n. Most people wouldn't pick up on something like that."
I finally turned to look up at him with vacant eyes. "I'm not most people."
He smiled faintly, eyes narrowing with subtle amusement. "Of course."
I lowered my gaze back to the computer screen, staring at the document full of criminals' names and times of death. "Are you worried?" I asked blankly.
"Worried?" he echoed, tilting his head slightly. "No... not really."
I watched him silently for a moment before closing the document with a soft click, the screen returning to his plain desktop background. I leaned back in his chair slightly; knees still pulled to my chest. "There's nothing else I want to see," I said quietly. "I'm satisfied for now."
Light raised an eyebrow slightly. "That's it? You came all the way here just for that?"
I nodded faintly. "I was bored."
He let out a quiet laugh through his nose, shaking his head. "You're unbelievable."
I stood up from his chair, brushing down my oversized pajama top absently before slipping past him towards the door. Light followed after me, hands in his pockets as he walked me down the hallway. We reached the front door just as his mother peeked around the corner from the kitchen, wiping her hands on a towel.
"Oh, Y/n!" she said warmly with a bright smile. "Are you leaving already? Would you like to stay for dinner?"
I blinked slowly, staring at her blankly for a moment before Light stepped forward slightly, nodding.
"Yeah, you should stay for dinner," he said with a soft smile. "I can tell you haven't eaten... like usual."
I looked at him silently, his gentle yet knowing gaze meeting my emotionless one. After a moment, I gave a slow, small nod. "...Okay."
His mother beamed happily, clapping her hands lightly. "That's wonderful! I'll set another place at the table."
Light chuckled quietly under his breath, his eyes flicking to mine with that faint glimmer of amusement. "Come on," he said softly, turning to lead me towards the dining room. "It'll be nice to have you here."
I followed after him wordlessly, my steps silent on the wooden floors.
I sat quietly at the dinner table, my knees pulled up to my chest on the chair despite Light's mother softly telling me to sit properly earlier. Light sat across from me, resting his chin on his hand, and his little sister sat beside him, staring at me curiously with wide brown eyes.
"Um... Y/n, right?" Sayu asked, tilting her head slightly.
I blinked slowly, shifting my gaze towards her. "...Yes."
She fidgeted with her chopsticks for a moment, then glanced at her brother before looking back at me, eyes shining with innocent curiosity. "Are you... smart like Light?"
Light let out a quiet chuckle through his nose, picking up a piece of fish with his chopsticks. "That's a weird question, Sayu."
She pouted slightly. "But you're always top of your class, and you said she's top of the class too! So, who's smarter?"
Light raised an eyebrow slightly, glancing at me with a faint smile. "That's hard to say," he mused. "Y/n's grades are the highest in the entire nation... but I'm right behind her."
Sayu's eyes widened in amazement. "Woah... that's so cool! You must study all the time, Y/n!"
I blinked at her blankly for a moment before lowering my gaze back down to my untouched bowl of rice. "...I don't study."
"Eh?" she blinked, confused. "But... how do you get such good grades then?"
I rested my cheek against my knee, my chopsticks remaining on the table. "I just... know things."
Light watched me silently, a small, amused smile playing at the corners of his lips. Sayu, however, looked even more confused than before, staring at me like I was some kind of alien creature.
Their mother returned to the table, sitting down with a bright smile. "Eat up while it's hot, Y/n. You're so thin... are you sure you're eating properly at home?"
I blinked once, slowly. "...Probably."
Light let out a quiet laugh. "That means 'no'," he translated calmly, picking up another bite of food. "She never eats much."
His mother frowned softly in concern. "That's not good... you need to take care of yourself, okay?"
I didn't respond, simply reaching out to pick up my chopsticks, my movements slow and mechanical as I took a small bite of plain rice. Light watched me silently, his sharp brown eyes observing my every move with quiet calculation hidden beneath his warm smile.
Sayu kicked her feet under the table, still staring at me with curiosity. "Do you wanna be a police officer too, like my dad and Light someday?"
I blinked at her, tilting my head faintly. "...No."
She blinked back, pouting slightly. "Then what do you wanna be?"
I lowered my gaze back down to my bowl of rice. "...Nothing."
Sayu fell silent at my answer, and the table quieted, the only sounds being the faint clinks of chopsticks against plates. Light leaned back in his chair slightly, resting his elbow on the table and his chin in his palm, his gaze never leaving my blank face.
"You're an interesting person, Y/n," he mused softly, his voice calm and smooth. "I've always thought so."
I didn't look up at him, simply continuing to eat my rice in silence.
Sayu continued asking small, harmless questions while Light occasionally chimed in with amused responses. Their mother insisted I eat more, placing extra fish and vegetables in my bowl despite my protests. Light simply watched with his usual serene smile, like he was observing a chess piece he was deciding where to place next on the board.
Sayu kicked her feet under the table again, staring at me intently as she swallowed her bite of rice. "Well... are you planning to go to To-Oh University like Light?"
Their mother perked up slightly, glancing over with a warm smile. "Oh, that's right. Light is taking the entrance exams soon. Have you thought about where you'll go, Y/n?"
I blinked slowly, lifting my gaze from my bowl to meet Sayu's eyes blankly. "...To-Oh."
Sayu's eyes lit up with excitement. "Really?! That's so cool! Then you'll be in the same university as Light!"
I rested my cheek against my knee again, lowering my gaze back down. "...I suppose."
Light let out a quiet laugh, picking up his cup of tea. "That's just like you," he mused, his voice tinged with amusement.
Sayu tilted her head. "What do you mean?"
He set his cup down softly, his brown eyes flicking over to me with a faint smile. "She doesn't really care where she goes. She'll go to To-Oh simply because... there's nothing else to do."
Sayu blinked in confusion while their mother frowned softly in concern. I didn't react, simply placing my chopsticks down on my now empty bowl.
"Are you full already, Y/n?" their mother asked gently.
I nodded slightly. "...Yes."
Light leaned back in his chair, resting his chin in his palm as he studied me with those calculating eyes. "You'll pass the entrance exams without even trying, won't you?"
I blinked at him slowly. "...Probably."
He chuckled under his breath. "That's what I thought."
Sayu pouted slightly, leaning closer across the table. "You're so cool, Y/n... I wish I was smart like you and Light."
I tilted my head faintly, staring at her blankly. "...Why?"
She froze at my question, blinking rapidly as if she didn't know how to answer. Light smirked slightly, watching the interaction with mild amusement.
Their mother let out a small laugh, shaking her head as she stood up to clear some of the dishes. "You two are both brilliant. But Y/n... try to enjoy being young too, okay?"
I didn't respond, simply resting my chin on my knee and staring blankly at the remaining rice in my bowl. Enjoy... there was nothing enjoyable about existing.
Light's eyes lingered on my face for a long moment, that same calm smile never leaving his lips, before he finally looked away, sipping his tea in silence.
After dinner, I quietly helped Light's mother clear the table. She thanked me each time I handed her a dish, her voice soft and warm, but I didn't respond beyond a small nod. I moved mechanically, stacking the plates, wiping down the table, and placing the chopsticks neatly by the sink without thought.
Sayu watched me from her chair, chin resting in her palms. "You're like... a robot, Y/n."
I paused for a moment, glancing at her with half-lidded eyes. "...Robot?"
She nodded quickly. "Yeah! You're so quiet and you move so smoothly... it's kinda cool."
I blinked at her once before returning to wiping the table without a word. Light chuckled softly from behind me.
After the kitchen was clean, I stood in the entryway, slipping my shoes on silently. Light walked over, shoving his hands into his pockets as he tilted his head slightly.
"I'll walk you out."
I didn't respond, simply opening the door. The sky was dark now, the faint glow of the streetlights lining the quiet neighborhood. Light stepped outside with me, closing the door softly behind him.
We walked down the stone path to his front gate. The cicadas chirped quietly in the summer night air. The creature... the one only Light (supposedly) could see... floated lazily behind him, its olive eyes watching me as always. I didn't acknowledge it.
Light stopped at the gate, turning to face me with a faint smile. "You'll make it home safe?"
I blinked at him slowly. "...Obviously."
He let out a quiet chuckle, looking away down the street before meeting my eyes again. "Thank you for coming over today... you're... interesting to talk to."
I tilted my head slightly, staring at him blankly. "...I suppose."
His smile widened just a fraction, amused by my response. "Goodnight, Y/n."
I didn't say anything, simply turning and walking away down the dimly lit street. The sound of my shoes against the pavement echoed softly in the quiet night. The wind was cool against my face, ruffling my unbrushed hair slightly.
When I arrived home, I opened the door quietly so as not to wake my father... though I doubted he would care even if I did. I walked to my room, closed the door behind me, and turned off the light.
I laid down on my futon, pulling the thin blanket over my body. My eyes stared blankly up at the ceiling in the darkness, unfocused. The silence of my empty room pressed against my ears.
Then, finally, I closed my eyes.
And fell asleep.
Time-skip: (Light's P.O.V.):
I wake up the next morning, the soft golden light of dawn slipping through my curtains. I sit up slowly, running a hand through my hair, before standing and grabbing a clean shirt. Ryuk floats lazily above my desk, watching me with those wide olive eyes, but he doesn't say anything as I slip out of my room and close the door behind me.
The house is quiet. I walk downstairs and into the kitchen, my footsteps light on the wooden floor. My mom is standing by the stove, humming softly as she flips an egg onto a plate.
I slide into a seat at the table, the cool morning air drifting in through the open window. The daily newspaper sits folded neatly in front of me.
"You're up early for a Saturday, Light," my mom comments with a small smile as she brings over coffee and breakfast, setting them down gently in front of me.
I nod once, picking up my chopsticks. "I'm going out, so I went to bed early last night."
"That's good. Don't push yourself too hard, alright?"
I don't respond, instead eating my breakfast quickly, my eyes flicking to the bold headlines of the newspaper. When I finish, I fold the paper under my arm, stand, and thank my mom quietly before heading back upstairs.
As soon as I step into my room, I lock the door behind me with a soft klik. Ryuk hovers midair, craning his neck slightly to see what I'm holding as I unfold the newspaper completely with a sharp snap.
"Got your test result?" Ryuk asks, grinning with curiosity.
I smile faintly, grabbing my Death Note from my desk. The cool black cover is reassuring beneath my fingers. "This Death Note's amazing," I murmur as I open it to the page with a soft flap. "Look at this. It happened precisely the way I wrote it."
I sit down in my rolling chair, the wheels creaking slightly under my weight. My eyes scan the page, satisfaction settling cold in my chest. "Now, let's hope the guy follows me again today..." I flip to a blank page and set down the notebook, grabbing my pencil and twirling it once in thought. "I'm pretty positive he will. There's no point shadowing me only on weekdays and then not watching what I do on my days off. He can't clear me until he does that."
"Now, for the main event." I mutter under my breath, starting to write. "I'll use this guy I saw on the news last night. Drug addict who tried to rob a bank and failed... shot a teller and two customers as he escaped... he's perfect."
I finish writing his name neatly before grabbing my phone and flipping it open with a flik. The screen glows softly in the dim morning light. I glance at the clock in the top corner.
"Nine o' clock..." I think, tapping the edge of the phone against my chin. "It's a little early... but I'll try a few anyway. Take whoever answers."
"Try a few...?" Ryuk questions, tilting his head.
"Girls," I answer simply, scrolling through my contacts. "This might surprise you, but I'm pretty popular with the ladies, Ryuk..." My thumb hovers over a few names before pausing, a thought flickering in my mind. I smile faintly, amused. "...Wait, actually... I think Y/n owes me for that favor, doesn't she? She never really sleeps anyway, so she should be awake..."
I press the call button, bringing the phone to my ear, listening to it ring as my smile widens.
Ryuk floated back, grinning with jagged teeth. "Hyuk hyuk..."
I listen to the ringing, tapping my pencil against my Death Note, the line buzzing quietly before it picks up on the second ring.
"Hello?" Y/n's voice answers-, clear and monotone, as always. Curious but flat, lacking inflection or warmth-, like she'd been awake for hours, which, knowing her, she probably had.
I smile faintly. "Good morning, Y/n."
"Light," she acknowledges simply. "Why are you calling me at nine in the morning?"
"I wanted to ask you something." I lean back in my chair, glancing up at Ryuk, who's listening with mild amusement. "Do you want to go to Spaceland with me today?"
There's a pause on the line. I can almost hear her blinking slowly in thought. "...Spaceland?"
"Yeah." I nod, though she can't see it. "You know-, Spaceland, the amusement park."
There's another pause. Then, her reply is blunt as ever. "I don't do things like that."
I chuckle softly, resting my elbow on my desk. "Come on. You've never been, have you?"
"No," she replies blandly. "And I have no interest in going-, I don't see the point."
I press my lips together, smile growing. "No point? Come on, Y/n, everyone needs to relax sometimes. I figured you'd be bored sitting alone in your room all day, analyzing Kira's patterns in your head."
I hear a faint shift on the line, like she's adjusting how she's sitting or standing-, probably staring blankly at her wall. "I am bored," she admits, deadpan. "But an amusement park isn't where I'd choose to be."
I keep my tone warm, coaxing-, an actor laying down gentle bait. "That's exactly why you should come. It'll be a new experience for you. It won't kill you to get some fresh air."
"I'd rather stay inside," she says, but I catch the tiny pause-, she's weighing it. I know her too well. Give her a puzzle or curiosity and she'll bite.
"Besides..." I lean back again, tapping the pencil against my lips. "It's not really about Spaceland itself. I'm curious about something-, about how people act in crowds, the way they move together. I thought you'd be the perfect person to observe it with me."
A tiny silence. Then, "You're using me to test something?" Still so calm, but a hint of dry amusement underneath it.
"You could say that," I admit lightly, tapping my pencil against the Death Note. "It'll be fun. You said yourself you were bored just now, didn't you? Plus..." I lower my voice slightly, adding a note of gentle persuasion. "...You owe me for yesterday, don't you? Consider this... payment."
A soft exhale on the other end-, almost like a ghost of a sigh. "I don't like crowds."
"I'll handle the crowds," I promise smoothly. "Just stand next to me and look unimpressed. You're good at that."
Silence again. I wait patiently, already knowing her answer before she speaks.
"...Fine," she finally mutters, sounding almost like a sigh. "Where?"
I smile, eyes flicking to the clock. "We'll meet at the bus stop near the station-, we'll take the bus there."
"...Okay."
"You don't have to dress up," I add, picturing her in the same plain clothes she probably slept in. "But try not to look like you just rolled out of bed-, I suggest you dress warm. It might get cold in the evening."
Silence. Then, flatly: "No promises."
I laugh, leaning my chair back so far it creaks. "Perfect."
She's silent again, likely blinking at her ceiling in that detached way of hers.
"See you at eleven, Y/n."
"Mm." She hangs up without another word.
I close my phone with a satisfied flik before placing it on my desk. Ryuk is upside down, his ragged hair dangling as he stares at me with those wide, olive eyes.
"Taking her to an amusement park, huh...?" he chuckles. "How sweet."
I smile faintly, resting my chin in my hand. "Don't misunderstand, Ryuk. This is all... part of the plan. Although, if it wasn't for this plan... I actually wouldn't mind taking her on an actual date. Maybe another time."
Time-skip:
The morning air is crisp as I walk down the quiet street towards the station. My hands are in my jacket pockets, my breath faintly visible in the cool air. The sun isn't fully overhead yet; still casting long shadows across the pavement. I see her immediately at the bus stop, sitting on the metal bench with her knees drawn up to her chest, arms loosely around them. She's wearing black leggings and an oversized black hoodie that swallows her frame, her hair unbrushed and falling in uneven strands around her face-, as if she didn't bother even looking in the mirror before leaving.
Ryuk follows lazily behind me, his footsteps silent on the pavement. "So... you're going on a date, right?"
I don't bother looking at him as I walk. "Well, she may not think of it as one... but all that matters is that the guy who's tailing me thinks it is. No matter how you look at it, it's an ordinary high school date."
Ryuk tilted his head to the side with a low chuckle. "But this morning... you wrote that drug addict's name into the notebook, saying you were going to find out your shadow's name... You gonna make the addict attack your date?"
I raise an eyebrow slightly at his words, eyes narrowing just a fraction. "Huh? Ryuk, you didn't see what I wrote for the details of the death?"
"Uh-uh." He grinned wide, showing his jagged teeth. "It's no fun if I know what's going to happen."
I close my eyes briefly in amusement, letting out a soft exhale, my breath fogging in the morning air. "Well, in that case... sit back and enjoy the show."
Ryuk chuckled but didn't respond further, his olive eyes glowing faintly in the shadow of the passing buildings.
Y/n doesn't look up as I approach, just stares blankly at the ground in front of her shoes. Her fingers curl into the fabric of her hoodie as the wind brushes her hair across her face.
"You actually came," I say lightly, standing in front of her with a faint smile.
She lifts her head slowly, eyes half-lidded, monotone voice as calm as ever. "You said to."
I chuckle under my breath, sliding my hands deeper into my pockets. "I half-expected you to ignore me."
She blinks once. "You were persistent."
"Mm. I suppose I was," I reply easily, shifting to stand beside her as the wind blows gently through the empty bus stop. "Did you sleep at all last night?"
She shakes her head slightly, eyes returning to the concrete. "No."
"Of course you didn't," I murmur, amused. "Have you eaten since dinner at my house?"
"No."
I sigh lightly, glancing at the vending machine behind us. "Want anything before we go? Juice? Coffee?"
She shakes her head again, still curled up in her seat. "I'm fine."
"You'll pass out at the park if you don't eat something," I chide softly, but she doesn't react. I glance up as the bus turns the corner down the street, approaching slowly. "Come on." I nod towards it as it slows to a stop, the brakes hissing. She uncurls herself, standing with her hands tucked into the front pocket of her hoodie.
We step onto the bus together. She sits down in the window seat, drawing her knees back up slightly, and I slide in beside her, feeling Ryuk drift silently down the aisle after us, though he chooses to stand near the back, looming over the other passengers unseen.
She stares out the window as the scenery begins to roll by, her reflection pale and blurred against the glass. The sunlight slants across her face, illuminating her dark circles and the distant emptiness in her eyes.
After a few minutes of silence, I glance sideways at her. "You really didn't sleep at all?"
"No."
"Because you were bored?"
She hums faintly, still staring out the window. "No... there was actually a lot to think about last night."
I smile faintly, turning to face forward again. "Well... maybe today will get you tired enough to sleep properly."
She doesn't answer, just rests her forehead against the cold glass, eyes half-closed-, her breath fogging the window slightly.
As the city rolls by outside, Ryuk hovers behind us, chuckling quietly to himself. "She really is an odd one, huh, Light?"
I ignore him, letting my eyes drift closed for a moment as I fold my arms across my chest.
Everything is proceeding as planned.
(Your P.O.V.):
I stared out the bus window as the streets passed by in a blur of muted color. Concrete, rusted railings, flickering shop signs, the silhouettes of houses pressed against each other like crowded books on a shelf. The bus rattled and groaned beneath us with each pothole, vibrations humming through the thin seat.
Light sat beside me, arms folded loosely over his chest, eyes half closed as if he were resting. But I knew he wasn't resting. His breathing was too controlled, too precise. He was thinking.
He always was.
So far, this trip wasn't exactly what he said it would be. "Fun," he called it. It was supposed to be fun. But we were only on the bus, and I doubted this "Spaceland" place would be any different. Rides, food stalls, noisy children, bright lights. None of it sounded "fun." I don't think I ever understood what that word meant. Even when I was younger, I never felt happy or excited like other children. Any small flicker of interest I felt towards something disappeared as fast as I could blink. I stopped trying to hold onto it.
I blinked slowly, eyes shifting upward to look at the creature floating above Light's head. It was looking out the window too, bored, its wings barely moving to keep itself aloft. That thing was always with him. Watching, waiting. I didn't know what it was, but I knew they were aware of each other. He knew it was there. It was proof enough by the way his eyes sometimes flickered in its direction with irritation.
I lowered my gaze slightly, catching sight of the man sitting behind us. The one who had been tailing Light these past few days. He sat back casually, a newspaper spread out in front of him, but his eyes flicked to Light every now and then, hidden behind the thin print of the page. I rested my cheek against my hand, continuing to stare blankly out the window.
"Bored already?" Light's voice cut through the quiet.
I didn't turn to look at him. "You said this would be fun."
He let out a soft chuckle under his breath. "We're not even there yet."
"I doubt being there will make any difference."
He tilted his head slightly, looking at me with faint amusement in his eyes. "You really don't like doing anything, do you?"
I blinked once. "There's nothing to like."
He hummed, leaning back in his seat with a small smile.
I let my gaze drift to a small boy outside holding his Mother's hand as they crossed the street. He was laughing, his tiny shoes stomping puddles leftover from last night's rain. His Mother scolded him softly, but she was smiling too.
"What do you think is fun, Light?" I asked suddenly.
He raised a brow slightly at the question. "Hm... I suppose... studying is fun for me. Solving difficult problems. Achieving things no one else can."
I blinked slowly. "That sounds lonely."
He smiled at that, turning his gaze to the window. "I don't mind being alone."
I hummed faintly. "Neither do I."
For a moment, the two of us sat in silence, listening to the engine's low hum and the soft chatter of passengers further down the bus. I could hear the creature above us shifting its wings, letting out a low sigh of boredom.
"What about you?" Light asked quietly. "If you could do anything right now... what would you choose?"
I closed my eyes, feeling the vibrations of the bus under my feet. "...Sleep."
He chuckled again, shaking his head. "Of course."
I opened my eyes, glancing at him sideways. "But you kept me up."
"I did," he said simply, eyes bright with amusement. "You seemed bored out of your mind yesterday. I thought you could use a change of pace."
I didn't respond, leaning my forehead against the cold window glass again, watching the rooftops roll by.
"Hey, Y/n."
I didn't move. "Hm?"
"Thank you for coming today," he said quietly.
I blinked once, expression empty. "You're thanking me... for being here."
"Yes."
"...Why?"
He smiled faintly, his eyes closing as he leaned back in his seat. "Because it means I get to spend today with you."
I turned my head away from him, staring out at the grey sky above the city. His words didn't stir anything inside me. No warmth. No fluster. Nothing. Just a quiet observation.
And yet... I found myself closing my eyes and letting the low vibrations of the bus lull my mind into quiet, if only for a moment.
At about eleven thirty-one A.M., the bus took its last stop before the amusement park. The doors hissed open, letting in a short gust of humid morning air before a man climbed aboard. He looked to be in his early thirties, wearing a stained grey hoodie and dark jeans. His hair was oily, unkempt, and his eyes were unfocused, wide with nervous energy. His hands were shoved deep into his pockets as he stepped past the line and began walking down the aisle.
Light's eyes narrowed sharply as they flickered over him. He shifted in his seat almost imperceptibly, a single muscle in his jaw tightening. I blinked slowly, noticing the subtle change. The man did look suspicious. His shoulders were hunched and twitchy, and his feet moved with an unstable, jittery rhythm.
Then suddenly-, he pulled a gun out from his pocket. There was a small metallic klik as he turned off the safety, the barrel pressing firmly against the side of the bus driver's head.
"Eh-?" the bus driver let out a surprised noise, his eyes wide as sweat immediately formed at his hairline.
The man grinned widely, teeth yellowed. "This bus has just been hijacked, ladies and gentlemen!!"
There were eight passengers in total, including Light, the man tailing him, and myself. The rest of the passengers-, a young Mother with her child, an elderly man clutching a grocery bag, and two teenage girls-, let out terrified gasps and whimpers. The little boy immediately began crying softly, his Mother shushing him with a trembling hand.
I blinked once, completely unfazed. Well... this was certainly a development. I tilted my head, observing the hijacker's shaking shoulders, the slight tremor in his wrist, the wide dilation of his pupils. Drug addict. Withdrawal or high-, uncertain.
"CUT THE SQUAWKING!" he roared, the gun now pointed at the ceiling before returning to the driver's head. "ANYBODY MAKES A SOUND OR MOVE OF ANY KIND, I BLOW THEIR DAMN HEAD OFF!"
His voice was shrill with hysteria. Light sat perfectly still beside me, eyes narrowed but expression calm. The man tailing him shifted slightly in his seat behind us, his eyes locked on the hijacker with an assessing, unreadable look.
"Hey, driver!" the man barked. "You know the Spaceland phone number, don't you? Call it!"
The bus driver was shaking so hard the phone receiver nearly fell out of his hands. "Uh... okay." His voice cracked as he dialed, pressing the buttons with clumsy, trembling fingers. "This is Sasaki, driver of bus number one hundred twenty-four."
"Tell 'em what's happening," the hijacker growled.
The driver swallowed hard, exclaiming shakily into the phone. "Th... The bus has just been hijacked by a man with a gun!"
"Gimme that," the hijacker snatched the phone out of his hands, pressing it to his ear with a wicked grin. "You hear that? Now listen to this." His eyes darted around at the passengers as he spoke. "Take all the money you made yesterday and bring it to Yuhihama bus stop-, that's two stops before Spaceland-, before this bus gets there. I want a woman delivering the money by car, and nobody else!! You try to be smart with me, or call the cops, I'll kill every passenger on this bus. You got that?"
He chuckled, a sickly laugh scraping out of his throat as he ended the call with a bip. The phone cord swung limply as he tossed the receiver back at the driver's lap.
I continued watching him with detached interest. His breathing was uneven, rapid-, heart rate likely spiked with adrenaline. He kept shifting his weight back and forth, the gun shaking slightly in his grip.
I felt Light shift beside me again, ever so slightly, his eyes still narrowed and calculating as he watched the man. He didn't look afraid. In fact, if I looked closely, there was something else flickering in his eyes.
Interest.
I rested my cheek against my palm, watching silently. This "fun trip" was proving to be... unexpectedly interesting after all.
Suddenly, I feel a light tap against my leg. Instinctively, my entire body twitches away from the touch. I hate being touched. Light knows that. My eyes narrow slightly in irritation, ready to glare at him, but before I can speak, he subtly holds up a small, folded note under the seat line, just out of the hijacker's view.
I blink once before lowering my gaze to read it.
"Don't worry, Y/n. It'll be okay. I'm going to look for a chance to grab the guy's arm and pin it down so he can't use the gun. My dad's taught me what to do in emergencies like this. The guy's pretty small and weak looking. I'm sure I can restrain him."
I glare at him slightly, ignoring the rising heat in my chest from the leftover irritation of his touch. How stupid of him. He knows he's lying. So why lie-, to me, out of all people? Does he think I'd believe such an obvious act?
Then, the man sitting behind us-, the one who has been tailing Light for days-, leans forward slightly between our seats. His voice is low but clear.
"Don't. It's too dangerous. Let me take care of that."
His accent is different. American. His Japanese is fluent, but I can hear the subtle rounded vowels beneath his words. An American, here, tailing Light Yagami. I lift my eyes to glance at him fully, catching the red text glowing faintly above his head.
Raye Penber.
I hum silently. The F.B.I...? Most likely. His posture is disciplined but casual enough to blend in. His suit is cleanly pressed beneath his coat, a slight bulge at his ribs where his gun sits in its holster.
Light begins scribbling something again quickly, but Penber cuts in softly, just above a whisper.
"It's okay, we can talk if we keep our voices down. He won't hear us over the noise of the bus."
Light crumples the note quietly and slips it into his jacket pocket before turning back slightly towards Penber, feigning mild curiosity.
"I don't mean to be rude, but you have a slight accent," he says with polite confusion. "You aren't Japanese, are you?"
Penber nods faintly. "No. I'm American. My mother's Japanese, though."
Light's eyes narrow slightly with an almost unnoticeable flicker of calculation. "Do you have anything that will prove to me that you aren't the hijacker's accomplice?"
My brows narrow. Has Light gone stupid today? He knows he's been tailed for days-, he even told me yesterday. Obviously, this man isn't an accomplice. But Light presses on, tilting his head innocently.
"It's pretty common practice. They make you think there's only one guy, but actually he has an accomplice in the back to keep watch and come to the rescue if something happens..." He side-eyes Penber again. "Well, do you?"
I watch Light with flat eyes. You want to see his I.D., don't you? But why-, unless...
My mind connects rapidly, quiet as ever. Kira needs a face and a name to kill. Light already has his face. What he lacks is his name. Is that what he's aiming for...? Light, are you Kira...? Is that why this creature shadows your every step? But... no. If the creature did the killings, Penber would already be dead. Which means, if you are Kira... it's you who writes their end.
And you have access to police information. You're being tailed for suspicion. If you really are Kira... L isn't far from catching you.
I blink once, my expression unchanging. Even if you are Kira... I suppose I can enjoy this rare moment of interest for a bit longer.
Penber lets out a soft sigh before slipping something between us-, his leather I.D. wallet, flipped open.
"You want proof? Here."
I glance down at it as Light grabs it lightly between his fingers, inspecting it. "Federal Bureau of Investigation. Raye Penber." What a fool... What a truly lousy F.B.I. agent. L seriously hired you to probe the NPA? Your caution is pathetic.
Light passes the I.D. back to him with a small smile. "Okay, I trust you. And right now, I won't ask why an F.B.I. agent is on board this bus. Got a gun?"
"Yes, I do," Penber nods firmly, his eyes flicking towards the hijacker before returning to Light.
"So, you'll take care of it if something happens?" Light asks, voice calm.
"Yes," Penber responds simply, with the conviction of a man who believes he is in control.
I narrow my eyes slightly, studying the hijacker as he waves his gun erratically at the passengers. His pupils are pinpricks, dilated and trembling. His body is thin, malnourished, twitching with an addict's tension. I hum silently in my mind. This man... I saw him on the news two days ago. A drug addict, just as I thought before. He killed three people and attempted to rob a bank.
I blink once. I'm surprised Kira hadn't already killed him. Unless...
My eyes drift to Light next to me. "Light... are you controlling his actions before his death right now? Is this where he meets his end?"
The hijacker's harsh voice cuts through the tense silence. "NOBODY MOVE!!"
Suddenly, Light shifts next to me. He leans forward slightly to adjust his jacket and, as if by chance, a small, crumpled piece of paper slips out of his pocket, fluttering down the bus aisle.
"Oops." His voice is overly loud, echoing off the metal floor.
I blink again, unamused. "Never mind... You did that on purpose. If you really didn't want him to notice, you wouldn't have made a sound. You want him to see that note."
The hijacker jerks his head towards Light, his bloodshot eyes wide with suspicion. "HEY, YOU!! HOLD IT!! WHAT'S THAT PAPER?!"
He steps forward unsteadily, pressing the barrel of his gun into Light's shoulder as he reaches down to snatch the crumpled note from the floor. "Ya little smartass, passin' notes and tryin' to plan something, are ya?"
Penber shifts behind us, his hand slipping into his suit jacket, trembling slightly. Pathetic.
The hijacker uncrumples the note roughly. "Tch! What's this... where you were meeting your date or somethin'?" He lets out a manic chuckle before throwing the paper at Light's head with a flick of his wrist. "Drop something again, I'll shoot ya!"
The paper bounces off Light's hair and lands in his lap. He remains still, his face neutral but his eyes glinting faintly with something dark and knowing. "You gave him the wrong piece of paper on purpose... but why? What is your intention here, Light?"
Suddenly, Light smirks faintly. The hijacker is still staring at him with twitching aggression, "And that goes for all of y'all. Anybody makes a move, I'm gonna..." but then his eyes widen, pupils dilating further, the whites showing in utter terror.
"WH... WHAT THE HELL?!" His voice cracks as he stares past Light. "YOU... IN THE BACK THERE... YOU..."
Penber jumps slightly behind us, his hand still hidden in his jacket, ready to draw his gun at the slightest provocation.
"MONSTER... HOW LONG YOU BEEN THERE?!" The hijacker's gun shakes violently now as he points it past Light, towards the back of the bus. His eyes are stretched wide, sweat dripping down his pale forehead.
My gaze follows the line of his sight, unsurprised. The creature is there, hovering in the bus aisle, grinning down at the hijacker with glowing olive eyes and jagged teeth exposed in an amused smirk.
"Hm? You talking to me?" the creature tilts its head slightly, its voice dark and echoing despite its casual tone. "You can see me...?"
"DON'T... MOVE... JUST STAY... RIGHT THERE... OR I'LL SHOOT...!"
I raise my brows faintly. "Interesting... How does he see him now? Why not this whole time? Was it... the paper? Is that why Light did that on purpose?"
Penber's voice erupts behind us, loud and commanding. "HE'S ON PCP OR SOMETHING, HE'S HALLUCINATING... EVERYBODY GET DOWN!!"
The other passengers scream, ducking their heads between their knees and trembling with fear. Light also bends down smoothly, pulling me down with him by the wrist. I feel my entire body twitch at the contact, my glare sharp and venomous as I whip my head towards him, eyes narrowing in silent rage.
But Light only looks at me for a fleeting moment, his mouth curling into a calm, knowing smirk before his gaze shifts up, meeting the creature's eyes with dark amusement.
I stare at him blankly. "Light... what exactly is your aim here?"
The creature tilts its head with that eerie grin, eyes glinting with amusement. "Oh, I get it. That note Light dropped, he must've torn it out of the Death Note. This guy touched it, so he can see me. But nobody else can... Smart kid, Light!"
I blink once. "But he knows I can see him also, right...? He must've not told Light... Huh... interesting."
The hijacker is trembling violently now, pointing his gun with both hands at the creature. "BACK... STAY BACK... URGH... WORRRGH!"
He pulls the trigger twice. Bang. Bang.
The passengers scream in terror, ducking their heads and covering them with their hands as if that would shield them from anything.
The two bullets phase right through the Shinigami's body, unfazed, its grin never faltering.
"Sorry, dude. I'm a Shinigami, so that isn't going to kill me." Its voice is almost teasing, casual and bored.
"A Shinigami... a Death God? And he said Death Note earlier... Is that how you, Light-, Kira-, kill?"
"WAAAAARGH!!" the hijacker screams again, firing four more bullets desperately into the creature's chest.
The Shinigami sighs in mock disappointment. "'I'm always hovering behind you,' 'Anyone who touches the Death Note can see me,' and 'You can shoot them through the head or anything, a Shinigami won't die.' All stuff I told Light. Pretty impressive how we put it all together. Guess he isn't one of Japan's top exam scorers for nothing. Plus, he got his shadow to show him his I.D...."
"Anyone who touches the Death Note can see me...?" My eyes narrow slightly. "I haven't touched anything. So why can I see you? Is it just being around Light? No... he specifically said a Death Note. What is a Death Note? Something a Shinigami possesses? Did this Shinigami give a 'Death Note' to Light?"
I look at Light from the corner of my eye as he watches the hijacker with silent calculation. "I have no doubt now that Light is Kira... but how does he commit these killings?"
"AGH... WARUGH..." the hijacker cries out as his gun clicks empty. He looks down in panic, then throws the gun aside and lunges for the bus driver, grabbing him by the collar.
"STOP THE BUS! OPEN THE DAMN DOOR!!"
The driver nods frantically, slamming on the brakes with a screech that echoes down the road. The hijacker practically jumps out onto the street, stumbling over his own feet.
Then-
Thud-, CRACK!
A car collides into his body at full speed. I hear the impact, bones shattering under metal, before he rolls onto the asphalt, unmoving, blood pooling out underneath him.
I hear Light's quiet voice beside me, matter of fact and unimpressed. "Exactly eleven forty-five. The Death Note's right on time."
I raise a brow faintly, turning my head to him. "Light is definitely Kira. And I also know that Shinigami definitely hasn't told Light that I can see him. Because if he had, why would Light bring me along? He didn't know I could see him and used me to get Penber's attention with that note. Interesting... This would've been a clever plan if he didn't decide to take me with him. How unfortunate."
We step off the bus onto the street. Penber is already there, looking shaken but relieved as he adjusts his suit jacket and grips his suitcase.
"Hey," he calls out to Light.
Light turns to him, eyes still calm. "Yes?"
Penber hesitates, glancing around at the stopped traffic before lowering his voice. "I'm actually in Japan on a top-secret mission... and if the Japanese police... well..."
Light nods smoothly, interrupting him with a soft, reassuring smile. "...I understand. I won't tell anybody about meeting you. That includes my father, of course."
Penber lets out a relieved sigh, shoulders relaxing. "You won't be doing that when you're dead." I muse inwardly, my face blank.
Penber begins to walk away, holding his suitcase tighter. "I'm out of here, then... don't want to be around when the police arrive, so..." He rushes past the stopped cars, disappearing among them.
Light turns to me, brushing invisible dust off his jacket. "I know we were set to go to Spaceland, but after something as freaky as this..."
I cut him off flatly. "It's fine. I didn't want to go anyway."
His brows raise slightly, a hint of amused curiosity in his eyes. "...Are you sure?"
I nod once. "Today was already... quite interesting." My tone remains monotone as ever, not a flicker of emotion passing through me.
Light smiles faintly, the corner of his lips twitching upwards. "Yeah... I suppose it was."
I stare at him blankly before looking away, stepping back towards the opposite sidewalk to begin walking home. He watches me for a moment before turning in the direction of his house, his hands in his pockets and the Shinigami floating silently above him.
"Light... Kira... Shinigami... Death Note..." My eyes narrow faintly as the wind blows my hair back from my face. "How very... interesting."

Light x L
#QueerSummmer - 27/30
L showing up at Light's school and introducing himself as Hideki Ryuga is fucking hysterical to me. imagine how every other student there must have felt. that's like if you were at college and some weird goth supergenius kid who looks like he hasn't stepped outside in 20 years showed up at your school and introduces himself as Harry Styles but not the one you're thinking of, and then he follows around some other weird supergenius kid for a week and they play the world's most homoerotic game of tennis and then they both disappear off the face of the earth forever
