Summary:
After he catches Steve’s name, he hears one of the girls saying,
“— but he’s probably a terrible kisser. I mean, can you imagine?”
And Bucky is drunk, and he’s on edge because he’s been having a bad night at this awful party, he hates it when people don’t get how great Steve is, and that means he’s gotta say something —
So he says,
“That’s bullshit.” It’s slightly slurred, and he’s a little dizzy when he says it.“Steve’s good at everything. Anyone’d be lucky to kiss him.”
(or: Bucky is very competent and is doing a pretty great job at just about everything — except handling his feelings for Steve. He's doing a terrible job at that. It's a problem.)
Snippet:
Steve is wearing one of Bucky’s t-shirts when Bucky walks into his room on Sunday afternoon. The shirt is a little big on Steve, just like Bucky’s shirts always are on him. Seeing Steve wear it does things to Bucky’s heart and his breathing, just like seeing Steve in his shirts always does.
Those thoughts used to go in the box. He doesn’t even try today. They’re too small, too everyday, and the box is too full. He can’t be bothered attempting to shove away these thoughts. He’s already pushed down a hundred similar ones.
Steve’s drawing on his forearm with a marker, adding to a colorful pattern that Bucky assumes he’s been working on for a couple of hours. It’s a habit of Steve’s, drawing and redrawing designs on his skin, ones he wants to someday make permanent.
Steve looks up at Bucky, capping his marker and grinning. He’s smiling but there’s something in his expression that makes Bucky think Steve might’ve heard about the party.
