TODAY IN PHILOSOPHY OF HISTORY
David Strauss and Historical Criticism
Friday 27 January 2024 is the 216th anniversary of the birth of David Friedrich Strauss (27 January 1808 – 08 February 1874), who was born in Ludwigsburg, Germany, on this date in 1808.
Strauss wrote a couple of books that caused a ruckus in their day, Das Leben Jesu, kritisch bearbeitet (1835-1836, English translation by novelist George Eliot The Life of Jesus, Historically Considered, 1846) and Der alte und der neue Glaube (1872, English translation The Old Faith and the New, 1873), which made Strauss both famous and notorious. Nietzsche responded to the latter work in the first of his Untimely Meditations, with many others entering the fray as well.

Recovering biblical womanhood by recovering a reverence for Scripture
Recovering biblical womanhood by recovering a reverence for Scripture
Until we begin to take the Word of God seriously, we will never recover an understanding of what Scripture teaches about womanhood. Until we recover biblical womanhood, our homes, families, society, and churches will all continue to go downhill. We cannot change or recover that which we don’t understand. Therefore, the question is “What is biblical womanhood?”Most people are a product of their…

Isaiah and His Books
The Jewish tradition is that Hezekiah and his men wrote/compiled Isaiah (Bava Batra 15a; Talmud). We know that Hezekiah compiled some Proverbs (Pro 25:1). We also know that other works, like Jeremiah, seem to compilations/anthologies rather than singly composed piece of literature. Jeremiah, as you know, is ordered radically different in the LXX than in the MT. The content is roughly the same,…

THE BOOK OF DANIEL DEFENDED: Attacks From False Friends “Christian” Bible Scholars and the Enemy Bible Critics
THE BOOK OF DANIEL DEFENDED: Attacks From False Friends “Christian” Bible Scholars and the Enemy Bible Critics
Modern objections to the Book of Daniel were started by German scholars who were prejudiced against the supernatural. Daniel foretells events that have occurred in history. Therefore, argue these scholars, the alleged predictions must have been written after the events.
But the supernatural is not impossible, nor is it improbable if sufficient reason for it exists. It is not impossible,…
