opinions on the ava/charlie v billie/charlie situation on highroad help

I have a lot of thoughts about High’rd Help, okay…

First of all, the shipping was very confusing for me because I totally felt like they were going towards Ava/Charlie in season 1 and then Ava got totally dropped as a character in season 2. All of her character growth was off-screen, we learned nothing new about her, and her role shifted from the lead to 100% secondary within the first few episodes of season 2. 

That being said, I wasn’t really into Charlie’s characterization (specifically the inconsistency of her being from so far in the past and being surprised by highlighters, yet things like an interracial high school didn’t even warrant a mention?) and thought Ava’s reaction to the Clooney/Jane thing–which I perceived as Jane pushing Clooney’s boundaries while he clearly (and rudely) dismissed her–was VERY immature and centered more in self-consciousness than a betrayal of trust. So I don’t know if they had been written as a couple in season 2 if I would have liked it; it could potentially have come off as Charlie just trying to force a soulmate relationship with Ava so that she could get to heaven, OR Ava just trying desperately to find someone to love her the way she wants without having to go too far out of her comfort zone. 

In season 2, Billy/Charlie became very heavily endgame. I really liked the visibility it gave to the idea of an asexual/non-asexual relationship, especially giving Billy a chance to explain her experience and the “chill” way Charlie reacted to it. But personally, I felt Billy became somewhat of a different character as soon as she was a potential love interest instead of a quirky best friend. She had less bizarre anecdotes, she wasn’t as zany, she acted more mature and gentle. 

TLDR it was fine I guess bc I don’t know if I would have been invested in the alternative. I might care more if the characters had been consistent.

i haven’t really mentioned it on this blog but high’rd help season 2 has been really, really fun. season one was good but it was definitely finding it’s feet. season 2 has been a blast so far.
