I was asked at the beginning of the week to hand in an article about the experience of being a Hijabi , and this article (throughout its writing process) has been an eye opener! Though a specific part of it highly speaks to me, I felt the need to share it even before the article gets handed in.

Coming from a community that is rather open the first question I asked myself was “ why don’t I just dress modestly I mean it won’t really be my hair that attracts men?”

I still remember the time my hijabi mum was going to the hair salon and she told a friend of hers that only a woman can get her hair done and her friend’s reply was “a male hairstylist sees thousands of women’s hair why would yours be special? and come on it won’t turn him on or something that is his job”

That was when I realized the purpose of the hijab isn’t all about having to cover up your body, what so ever it is about getting an order from god or being asked to give up a certain thing that highly matters to you for spiritual reason!

Thinking that all those women chose to cover up their body from head to toe so they wouldn’t “attract men” is shallow.

“I don’t like showing my hair to women too unless I really trust them!”

I believe that each woman wearing the hijab has a different purpose and she gets to find new purposes in each phase of her life while the veil accompanies her.

Once a woman reaches her purpose the decision is easy and is not something that you think long off.
