Having just rewatched How I Met Your Mother, I canot stress enough how much the ending of the show is a slap in the face for a bet I didn't lose.
The show managed a very difficult thing, and that is having Tracy live up to the expectations set during the run of the show. She was the definition of Legen-wait-for-it-dary.
If they had wanted to subvert the expectations in some way, Ted could've told the story while Tracy was in surgery, and he distracted himself. It would have explained why some of the stories were inappropriate. And the show then could've ended with a call that Tracy had gotten out of the surgery, and she was well and then another time skip where all the kids are grown up and everyone is gathered together for some important event, like Ted turning 60 or Ted and Tracy renewing their vows. Or heck, just let it end on a more ambiguous note and have the story be over when Ted and Tracy chat in the train station right after they first meet.
Another subversion of expectations could've come in the form of Ted being the one who was sick, and he told the story to his children so they would know exactly how much Ted loved their mother and also to enforce that even if he were to die his friends would be there for Penny and Luke. Though this one wouldn't fit quite as well with the rest of the show, with Ted getting emotional over a mother missing his daughter's wedding and him saying that he would take another 45 minutes with Tracy if he could.
Ted and Robin don't work as a couple. They are better off as friends. This is based on the show that we got. Had the show ended after three or four seasons, then sure, the ending that we got would have been very funny, and a lot of people (myself included) would have been satisfied.
Subversion of expectation works if the rest of the story is kept in mind. There was an extremely poignant moment when Ted let go of Robin and told her that he doesn't love her "that way anymore."
Then you're telling me that all the kids got from the story was that Ted was in love with Robin? No. Just no.
Preliminary Poll
Tracy McConnell (The Mother)
Submission reason:
killed off and then ted gets back with robin. the writers totally misjudged how much chemistry ted and tracy had, and how much the fans would grow to love tracy. so they stuck with their original plan of killing her off-screen and it was not good. it was a terrible finale
Look what they did to Tracy!
She was fucked over!
The finale was fair to her imo
I don't know her

The Jesse and Sophie thing is too obvious so they probably don’t end up together...unless they're trying to make it so we don't suspect them because it seems too obvious and they really are endgame. I wonder if the first episode could be foreshadowing that Sophie and Sid end up together, because Sophie walks into the bar and people think it’s Sid’s future fiancé from school and surprise her. It might be that later they do the same thing for when Sid proposes to Sophie someday after Sid breaks up or divorces his past fiancé/wife. Another possibly super significant thing is that Sid and Sophie’s phones got switched the first time they met- which somewhat parallels how Ted and Tracy kept passing around the yellow umbrella in the original. We’re not supposed to suspect him because he’s engaged now to his longtime girlfriend, but she is in Los Angeles for the time being, so it’s totally possible. It could also be Charlie- people I’ve seen on Tumblr write about this seem to be totally overlooking this possibility. Ian is also still a possibility. There’s also an outside chance that we didn’t see some other dude that she met that night and that he’s the guy. Or that Sophie realizes she's bi and ends up with a woman and uses one of the guys as a sperm donor. I think in this version it might be interesting if the father isn’t the guy that she actually ends up with AT ALL. Like maybe the son is an accidental pregnancy during a relationship. We’ll see!
Himym is my latest hyperfixation, and there's a secret better (more LGBT) version of the show that lives in my head.
"i must have heard your mother's rendition of 'la vie en rose' a million times over the years,...but that performance,...that will always be my favourite.”
Why is Tracy McConnell marrying Ted and why isn't she marrying me? 😔
