While we celebrate his effort, let’s honor that people came before him. Let’s honor that he wouldn’t have been able to make that song without hip-hop’s long legacy of this kind of music activism.
Also stop calling Black music a “distraction” when my ancestors sang their way through struggle and got strength to carry on because of music. We can do the same.
I know what this moment in hip-hop did for me, the energy it brought me, and the work continues as I blast “Not Like Us” in the background.
