Today I decided to try out HipChat. I'm a fan of instant messaging chat apps.
It was a bit lonely by myself in the chat room but I had a look at the features it provided. I'm not sure how far atlassian wants to go with adding features though. There's many little things like changing your "status" (you could say working in building 3 for example) so that people know a bit about you when you're messaging them and might not ask things like, where are you, what are you doing etc.
I also noticed there's no capability to delete or collapse messages.
I liked how it was easy to customize your experience though.
I'm not sure if a lack of avatars is a good thing, something I haven't discovered or something that is going to be implemented as well.
I found it a bit weird that clicking "HipChat" didn't really do anything besides take you back to the hipchat page. Perhaps having a small popout menu would be nice where you can select to go to the hipchat home page, or do other things (which I don't know what they are yet).
The thing that stood out most about hipchat was that it is the simplest Atlassian product I've used yet. It's not very cluttered with menus or features.
I saw from the demos that it integrates easily with other Atlassian products, but besides that it is a bit hard to see what the use of HipChat is for those that aren't into the whole Atlassian ecosystem. That being said, that makes it no less of a simple to use application =)
Those are just superficial first impressions, I'm sure I'll get a better formed opinion as time goes on =)
TLDR
Hipchat is nice, nothing wrong with it. Looks simplest out of all products I tried (which is neither a good nor bad thing). Would be nice to have something else happen when you click the hipchat logo rather than being taken back to the page (like a popout menu or something).
