Hip surgery is officially 1 week away from today. 😶
New hips at the age of 22????
Yes.
Well, not exactly in a way that you're thinking of it. I did not have a total hip replacement. But, I did need some work done to my hip. Well both hips to be exact but I'll get into that here in a moment.
I had hip surgery in my left hip for FAI cam-typw hip inpingement with a torn labrum. Now what this means is that the top of my femur bone was malformed. It wasn't completely round and it was more or less flat on one side. This caused my labrum to be torn because it kept rubbing and grinding against it. It also caused some tearing in my cartilage.
What they did in my surgery was shave and reshape my femur bone, repair the labrum tear and cleaned up the cartilage and arthritis in my hip joint. It was a 2.5-3 hour surgery.
I am now about 2.5 weeks post op. And I'm doing really well. I had my first post op follow up with my hip surgeon and I got the stitches out. Which by the way, did not hurt. And I got to see the oddly interesting pictures of my hip. Which looked kinda gross but also was intriguing.
I'm still on crutches at 50% weight bearing and will be on crutches for about 3-4 more weeks. He wants to make sure that my soft tissue heals properly due to my Classical Ehlers-Danlos. Which was a good call. Also, once I am completely off crutches I can also have the brace off as well. Which will be kind of nice.
But honestly I'm pleased with how well this has gone. I've noticed a difference already with my left hip compared to my right hip. Once I heal from this surgery we will be doing the same procedure to my right hip.
I'm honestly kind of worried for my right hip that due to me putting most of my weight on it and using it a lot more that it will be worse than my left. But I guess we will just have to see!
But, all in all this was definitely a good choice for me to make. I'm glad that I made the decision otherwise my hips will be a lot more worse off than what they already are.
Hip surgery #3 is scheduled for Monday.
I’ve been out of work since December and won’t work again until the summer, most likely.
I’m having a labral repair, oesteoplasty, and capsular plication. Overall, I’ll be on crutches and in a brace for two months.
23 days post-op
I went to the gym today and did the elliptical for 30 minutes. My hip felt horrible and still feels horrible. It's been hurting really bad since I started walking on it. I don't wanna say this surgery didn't work because, obviously, it's too soon to tell, but I'm not getting my hopes up. I'm in more pain now than I've ever been and it's just so disheartening. It feels like there's a razor blade in my hip every time I take a step. I'm hoping it gets better soon because this pain really sucks.
3 days post op
Not in a lot of pain, as I expected. I'm mostly in pain when I roll my leg which I'm not supposed to. I have no idea if I'm NWB or WBAT so, to be safe, I decided to be NWB till I see my Ortho on the 19th. Apparently, he only took out the loose piece of bone because my labrum was not torn but I don't really believe that. I could be out of work anywhere from 6-12 weeks which really sucks. I was told it was just going to be six but I guess his PA changed her mind. So bored and over this surgery since I'm not in pain. I feel like I can walk around when I can't. I just wanna start working out and getting stronger.
When I scheduled my upcoming hip scope, I was kinda on the fence about it. I'm in a lot of pain but I'm ALWAYS in pain. My hip wasn't affecting my day to day life that much. Every now and then is notice a twinge of extreme pain...it just got really bad at night. But, since my last appointment, my pain has gotten really bad. My hip constantly hurts. I'm glad I scheduled the surgery because I felt better immediately after my last scope so hopefully this is the same way and I'm done with all the hip pain. 13 days.
Hip surgery #2 scheduled for February 4th
Surgery scheduled for February 4th. MRI found a floating piece of bone about one inch in diameter that needs to be removed and a slight tear in my labrum that might need to be repaired. I don’t know whether to be happy or not that I was right about what’s wrong with my hip. I’m glad that it can be fixed, or hopefully will be. But, at the same time, I don’t want surgery again. My Ortho said the bone that is in my joint was there last surgery and on the MRI but, apparently, it wasn’t concerning and it was only 1cm at the time. Now it’s an inch and he thinks that’s what’s causing all my pain. The MRI report said I have another slight tear in my labrum but he doesn’t agree with that. I just think he doesn’t want to admit he was wrong and I was right for the second time. Anyway, I’ll be on crutches and in the stupid hip brace for about a month if it’s just the debridement, a little bit longer if the tear is there and gets repaired. Really not looking forward to this.
I started PT again on Tuesday. I'll probably end up going like once every two weeks because I only need to strengthen my hip and shoulder. The therapist who evaluated me thought I was funny? I don't even know. She said I was becoming her favorite patient. She liked that I knew my stuff. Although, she asked if I had ever been to PT before. I just gave her the "are you kidding" look.
Yesterday, I saw my hip Ortho. We're still gonna watch my shoulder. I don't even know if he's taken over my shoulder. I originally saw my knee Ortho for it. They're bros so they'll work it out in the end. We were talking about my hypermobility and the success of surgery and he said that my knee Ortho is "pretty good at what he does and I like to think I am, too." Love him.
Let me not forget to mention that I have hip flexor tendonitis. IT'S TERRIBLE. I had a feeling I had it before he told me and it's worse than surgery. I hope it goes away soon.
I go back in two months.
