Chapter 9: Safe Heaven ❤️🩹
The past few days had been brutally exhausting for Oliver. He had been dealing with several heavy family commitments that required his full attention and responsibility. Between endless phone calls, meetings, and supporting his family through difficult moments, he had carried a great weight on his shoulders.
When he finally arrived home that evening, he looked drained — shoulders heavy, blue eyes shadowed with fatigue. Amy didn’t say much at first. She simply opened her arms and held him for a long time in the doorway, letting him breathe.
After a light dinner, they moved to the sofa. The lights were low, and a gentle nature documentary played softly on the television, more for background comfort than actual watching. Oliver curled up against Amy almost immediately, seeking the warmth he had been craving all day.
“You were incredible these past days,” Amy whispered, her fingers slowly threading through his blond hair. “I know how hard it’s been. All those responsibilities, taking care of everything that needed to be handled… You were so responsible, so strong. I’m really proud of you, Oliver. Prouder than you can imagine.”
Oliver let out a shaky breath, his face buried deeper against her chest. For a few moments he remained silent, simply absorbing her words and the steady rhythm of her heartbeat.
“I felt so tired,” he admitted quietly, his voice muffled against her. “But I knew I had to keep going. For them.”
Amy continued stroking his hair with infinite tenderness, her other hand rubbing slow circles on his back.
“And you did. You showed up exactly as they needed you to. But now you’re home, sweetheart. You don’t have to be strong anymore. Not tonight.”
Oliver’s body gradually grew heavier against her as the exhaustion finally won. The safety he felt in her arms — the deep, unspoken comfort of knowing he could be completely vulnerable without judgment — allowed him to let go. He knew, even without saying it, that the soft protection he wore beneath his clothes was part of that safety, a quiet reminder that he didn’t have to hold everything together alone.
“You can rest now, my love,” Amy murmured, pressing a long kiss to the top of his head. “I’ve got you.”
His breathing slowly evened out, becoming deep and peaceful. Within minutes, Oliver had fallen completely asleep on her chest, one hand loosely clutching the fabric of her shirt like a child seeking reassurance.
Amy didn’t move. She simply held him, continuing to caress his hair with gentle fingers while the soft glow of the television flickered across their intertwined bodies. In that quiet moment, with Oliver safely tucked against her heart, she felt an overwhelming wave of love and protectiveness wash over her.
She leaned down slightly and whispered against his hair, even though he was already fast asleep:
“My sweet, brave boy… You can always come home to me. Always.”
