“Hiraeth is a word which cannot be completely translated, meaning more than solely “missing something” or “missing home.” It implies the meaning of missing a time, an era, or a person - including homesickness for what may not exist any longer. It is associated with the bittersweet memory of missing something or someone, while being grateful of that/ their existence.”
A treasured memory of your grandparent’s house, a bakery run by witches filled with dozens of haunted treats, a quiet space station observatory orbiting a sleeping planet, or a cozy hideaway for a party of adventurers - home is what you make of it and where you make it.
Hiraeth is an upcoming artbook based around the concept of home. Inspired by the Welsh concept of hiraeth, or the Portuguese saudade, or the Romanian dor, this artbook aims to showcase a number of narrative environments from dozens of talented artists.
Submissions are open from Oct 1st to Oct 28th, with final decisions being sent out no later than November 15th.

finally posting my full illustration from the wonderful @hiraethbook!
and my little artist’s statement that was published with it, for anyone curious about some thoughts behind the piece:
a crop of the print I got to make for HIRAETH :)
there’s still time to back the project here, grab yourself (or a loved one) a copy of the art book, and enjoy a little piece of home!
HIRAETH is proud to introduce the 1st of our contributing artists! AJ can be found on twitter at @https_aj and at her main portfolio site: https://httpsaj.wixsite.com/portfolio/
little snippets from my illustration for @hiraethbook!
in case you missed it the first time around, HIRAETH is an art book about narrative spaces, treasured locations, and what “home” means to you. it’s filled with gorgeous art (and merch!) and the relaunched kickstarter is now live, so consider checking it out!
Hi is there any confirmed schedule for the anthology? I wanna make sure I'm not busy during the creation process. Hope that's ok to ask!
Hello!
Thank you for your question - all accepted artists will have a minimum of three months to finish their piece(s), with a check-in every month (thumbnails/sketches, then lines, then the final piece). The rough due date for the final piece is February 2020.
If there are extenuating circumstances and you feel like you’ll miss a check-in, we can discuss a later submission. The firm dates are the final submission date, although I will also allow for a final, hail-mary submission the day the kickstarter begins.
I'm not sure if my submission went through. Is there a screen I'm supposed to see when I click submit?
Hello! You should see a page letting you know that all of your information has been collected and submitted. As well, the form is set-up to ask you if you’d like an email receipt, that shows a copy of your responses, sent to you upon completion. If you did not receive either of these two screens then it’s very likely your submission did not go through.
You can try submitting again and, if you have any further issues, feel free to email me directly at [email protected] (or send an ask off anonymous with the email you are trying to submit with - I will not publish this) and I will do my best to help you out with your submission. :)
