Depth of Field Ep 5

Spoilers ahead.

Ep 5 arrived today and went to the confession again, but this time with more of the inner monologues with both our leads.

The confession, as expected, didn't succeed, but maybe not for the reasons we might have expected.

That was the last of their interactions in high school, though.

"After that day, Hayakawa no longer came to the roof."

We're next in the university setting and it's three years later. Konno is (apparently) a photography student and still working for the same photographer as in high school. The photographer takes his other assistant (?) and Konno out for dinner and they discuss relationships (in a surprisingly blunt/direct way). The other assistant makes a sort of joking "wanna date" at Konno, the boss asks if he's into guys, and we get a nice "I don't care about gender"—which clearly gets through to Konno.

Some period later, Konno is going through his possessions and comes across the original rooftop photo.

the photographer invites some of the students to join him as he photographs a band. And you knew where this is going: we (and Konno) know this music.

Sure enough, it's Hayakawa. And Konno is instantly deep in his feelings.

(For a second I thought he was going to cry. But our JBL boys don't do that so much.)

The photographer takes Konno to meet the band after the show, at what turns out to be Hayakawa's apartment. It's a bit of a shock for Hayakawa, but not, apparently, an entirely unwelcome one.

Later in the evening the bandmate's passed out and Hayakawa returns from an oddly extended trip to the konbini to find Konno also asleep. Konno starts asking questions.

But he doesn't get an easy answer from Hayakawa, who responds:

…and—for whatever reason—Konno doesn't have it in him to say what he should say in response. He just says "It's good to see you" as Hayakawa heads to the shower.

Oh, Konno. You've been pining for him and you don't even know it. And you're making Hayakawa do more work. Hayakawa did the work. It's your turn now.
