RWS Week 12
This weeks tumblr post had 2 parts to in which as a group took a piece of them and split it up evenly between the 4 of us.
TOPIC : Hispanic Diversity in STEM
PURPOSE : To influence Hispanic middle school through college students to get involved in the STEM education.
AUDIENCE: Middle School - college students (13-24)
SOLUTION: Provide scholarships and educational programs for kids to raise the representation for Hispanics in STEM.
For my part of the group tumblr post was to come up with the solution to our issue with diversity in STEM.
The solution for the audience is to raise awareness with Diversity in STEM but to also apply themselves for the advocacy of diversity in stem. What I mean by applying is by actively searching and applying for scholarships. As well as to enroll in workshops regarding engineering.
ETHOS:
For the ethos portion I used the google search engine with the keywords of Scholarships for STEM, Engineering scholarships. From there I looked at various sites to determine their credibility and surprisingly enough there wasn’t a site in the first pages of the search that wasn’t a credible source The sites that I believe are the have the most credibility are the the ones ending in .org and .net as those sites are not out for profit.
PATHOS:
For the pathos portion I couldn’t really find notable quotes from the websites so I went to youtube to find videos regarding information with scholarships. Now I decided to o with international scholarships as well as workshops for engineers as we are in a border town and would like to promote internationally to further spread information as well as diversity. The workshop portion is for our younger audience so as a group we would like to get the youth involved with stem workshops and projects early.
LOGOS:
For the logos portions I went to a trusty website known as the NSF or the Nation Science Foundation to review their statistics regarding engineering and the percentages of each race and gender to have documentation of the research. As shown in the table below one can see that there is a huge gap in race and gender for the diversity.
ADVOCACY:
For the advocacy I went back to the same website and used this quote that went over the statistics in the figure and why the numbers were so far apart “ Male scientists and engineers employed in industry have higher levels of education than their female counterparts. Among scientists and engineers employed in industry, women are more likely than men to have a bachelor's as their highest degree and men are more likely than women to have a doctoral degree. Black, Hispanic, and white scientists and engineers in industry have fairly similar educational attainment, but Asians, Asian men in particular, are more likely than any other group to have master's or doctoral degrees (table 1). Compared with scientists and engineers without disabilities, those with disabilities are more likely to have a bachelor's as their highest degree and are less likely to have a master's as their highest degree. “
A long quote indeed but from the gist of the quote it shows that white males are more than likely and have held higher level engineering positions due to the fact that they simply hold higher level degrees and that other races are more than likely not to pursue a higher degree besides a BA in engineering.
