His demeanor seems light enough, at least, and his smile good-natured ------ if still wry and full of that wolfish sharpness that he can’t seem ( or perhaps does not wish ) to ever keep behind his lips. The form of address she chooses seems, at the very least, to amuse him ------ what more dwells in that smile is anyone’s guess.
“ I take it, then, that you’ve not learned my name. ”
He notes how she had avoided asking any further questions and more or less manipulated him into explaining himself, and though he could easily have avoided granting her even that much, what would be the point? Leaving aside that he’s never really been one for pedantry ( semantics, maybe, but that’s another matter entirely ), there’s no fun in a game where the rules are unclear, or keep changing. And puzzles with too many missing pieces are hardly worth solving.
“ Your trespass, I think, was born of misunderstanding my intentions ; the questions I allowed you were for the purpose of clarifying what you had already discovered on your own, not for gleaning new information ------ though if you manage that under the constraints I set you, so much the better. I bear you no grudge for it ; I hope you will extend me the same courtesy for pointing out that the question you called me here to ask cannot be answered with a simple ‘ yes ’ or ‘ no. ’ It was structured that way, true, and skilfully so... but I cannot answer with but a word, for there are too many variables. All the same, I will not deny you the answer out of hand ------ but as it was not part of our original agreement, you must decide how much the information is worth to you, if indeed it is worth enough to pay for. ”
“ And it’s ‘ my lord, ’ by the way, ” he adds, smirk cracking into a small grin. “ That information is free of charge. ”
