The Elizabeth Morse Genius Reading Room, it serves as a dedicated study and research area, originally part of what was known as the Oriental Institute.

It is located on the second floor of the Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures (ISAC) at the University of Chicago.

The Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures Museum houses a significant collection of artifacts from the Near East, including a statue of Tutankhamun and the Megiddo Ivories.

One More Library

We have one more library to celebrate this #NationalLibraryWeek, and that is the Moscow Public Library. A project championed by the Moscow Pleiades Club and the Ladies Historical Club, this library has been serving patrons for more than 110 years.

A Carnegie Library finished in 1906, it has had several renovations over the years, including the most recent addition completed in 1983. Whether you need a book, movie, CD, free Wi-Fi or some other service, this library is still serving patrons throughout the area!

We love all libraries, but some of the ones close to home have a particular tug on our hearts. Happy National Library Week! Hopefully, you spent some time in your local, historic, or academic libraries.

The world watched as, at the behest of the Library of Congress, singer, rapper and classically trained flutist Lizzo played a crystal flute once owned by President James Madison at a concert in Washington, D.C., Sept. 26, 2022. Some people then thought: "Wait a minute, I thought the Library of Congress held books and important papers, not things like crystal flutes."

Well, true enough, the Library of Congress (LOC) in Washington, D.C., is the largest library in the world and holds more than 51 million cataloged books and other print materials in 470 languages. The original library was housed in the U.S. Capitol building, but its 3,000 volumes were burned by British troops, along with pretty much every other government building in Washington, during the War of 1812. Three years later, the LOC bought Thomas Jefferson's collection of almost 6,500 books, and it's been growing ever since. The library has amassed over 173 million items, all stored on its 838 miles (1,349 kilometers) of shelves. Here is a sample of just eight of the fascinating objects to be found there.

Save the North Park Library! 

This charming little library on the corner of Delaware and Hertel is up for demolition because Ciminelli wants to develop a large corner building on the site. The City of Buffalo abandoned it a few years back due to asbestos (which needs to be removed anyway), moved the library to a strip mall across the street and sold it to Ciminelli. While we love seeing new development, this entire corner is a combination of strip malls, big box stores and vacant land. This library is the last little gem and deserves a second look!
