Maybe Pate is right. But that doesn’t make Creighton want to do it any less.

Not this time. Not after everything Pate’s done to him.

But, Gods, he certainly does look pretty right now, bloodied to hell from their fighting and cowering on the ground beneath Creighton’s shadow. How sad it is, truly, that the only time Pate speaks with honesty is when he’s about to die. Not when he says he’ll never betray his knight. Not when he tells Creighton he loves him. Only when his own life’s at stake. Only when the world revolves around his whim — is wrapped around his finger just like the man that threatens him in this moment.

And Creighton knows this. And that’s why he keeps his blade angled over the thief’s throat.

“My world’ll be better without ya,” the knight says, choking on something he wishes he didn’t still feel underneath the hatred. “I’ll accomplish killin’ the bastard wha’ ruined me. Isn’t tha’ enough…?”

The axe’s blade reflects the firelight — reflects the fear in Pate’s eyes.

Mohg trusts Creighton. For all his boorishness, all his vulgarity, all his endless prattling and questioning and sucking up in the hopes of a compliment, he knows the man to be honest, loyal, and dedicated. He trusts Creighton to guard both himself and his dearest Miquella. He trusts Creighton to cull and kill on command. He even trusts Creighton’s judgment of others’ character, almost as much as he trusts Varrè.

But something about this man Creighton’s brought to meet Mohg feels… off.

And he thinks he knows why when he sees the hand that’s being offered to him.

Mohg had first extended his own hand without question, palm down, fingers pressed together, to allow the stranger to take his hand into his own for a proper greeting — a kiss upon his knuckles, as one ought to do for any lord. But the Omen quickly retracts his hand as if burned when he sees the telltale scabbing of scarlet rot — foul Malenia’s curse — scarring the other’s fingers.

That’s also when he notices the red hair. And the golden eyes. And the peculiar stench of godkin…

Oh, he does not like this — not one bit. He hmphs loudly — dismissively — eyeing Creighton from across the room, as if to ask him, Why would you bring someone like this to our Dynasty’s mausoleum…?

“A pleasure, truly,” the Lord of Blood half-hisses, lip curled in a sneer as he eyes the man up and down, hands folding behind his back. “Thou’rt one of Malenia’s rotted kin, art thou not?” Glare.

From across the room, Creighton winces.
