Season 2, Hour 2: Scyther, No Scything!
Hobokemon is a lucrative business at this point. Joining Bryan Cranston is Phil Seymour Hoffman in the role of Mareep the Sheep.
I caught Mareep just South of Violet City. I usually have an Ampharos in my party in Gold until extremely late-game, where I usually start finding better alternatives. His high Special Attack (for an early game/non-legendary) serves as a heavy counterweight to Feraligatr's high Attack.
Mareep also evolves very quickly. It took me about 20 minutesgo grind him up from lvl 6 to lvl 15, where he evolved into Flaaffy (still wondrously portrayed by Phil Hoffman). Speaking of evolutions, Totodile evolved into Croconaw shortly after starting hour 2 as well.
As far as catching wild Pokemon goes, Gold is much easier than Red when considering the guidelines I have in place.I already have two Great Balls and (I think) four PokeBalls, seeing as I used one to catch Mareep. Still not much in the way of potions, but that's to be expected at this point.
So anyway, onwards and upwards.
I'm spending a lot less time grinding my way through Johto. Maybe my hubris from being Pokemon Champ 3 years ago in Kanto hasn't faded yet. Regardless, I made quick work of Union Cave and the Slowpoke Well.
Aside: I feel like Slowpoke Tails wouldn't taste particularly good. Or maybe they're amazing. Guess I'll never know considering the $1mil price tag and me being a hobo and all.
I came up on the Azalea Town Gym near the end of the hour. I'm not entirely sure why it's acceptable for two of your Pokemon to be Metapod and Kakuna if you're a gym leader, but apparently that sort of stuff flies in Johto. Bush league shenanigans, I tells ya! I mean, Scyther is kinda cool, but Scyther is part flying-type and was dealt with quickly. An early electric type has it's advantages.
With 2 minutes left in the hour I was ambushed by my "rival" (herein named "???") as I headed for Ilex Forest. His Gastly, Bayleef and... Magnemite(?) were no issue. So little of an issue, in fact, that I beat him just before the hour came to an end. Scrub.
