SFM Fun Fact!
So, it’s not a very hidden fact I love working with 3D models. One of my favorite things, in-fact! SFM, or Source FilmMaker at its full name, is one of the weirdest programs I’ve had the pleasure of experiencing. For example, you’ve all played Half-Life 2, who hasn’t? (Quite a few people, but it’s okay, we believe in you) Fun fact about Dog, throughout the game, if you’re watching closely you can see his iris twist and turn with an Aperture. Cool, right? ... OKAY WHAT SORT OF WIZARDY DID YOU PEOPLE PULL, VALVE!? His eye confuses me, because I’ve never seen someone use mesh manipulation and weight painting this way, it confuses me. Just take a look.
To explain what exactly you’re looking at, Dogs eye is a bone. Y’know, the thing used to control the models limbs! Most facial flexes though are shapeKeys, sliders that go from one state of being to another, not hard to use. There’s plenty of models in HL2 that have a bunch of shapeKeys, because they help with lip-syncing and facial animation so much. The process is sped up 10 fold by it. But it has completely thrown me for a loop how instead of using a shapekey, they used the X Rotation of this “Focus Ring Bone” to dictate how it twists. And, I guess that makes sense, an aperture DOES rotate, but how they managed this is beyond me. I’ve even gone INSIDE the model, looking at the cone-shape that is his iris. Every line of the aperture starts at a base, and rotates with the bone, but--- HOW??? I am so confused!!! The Developers at VALVe were very creative in their hatred of shapeKeys I guess...?
