In my family, in addition to my own illnesses (CFS, MCS, Hashimoto's thyroiditis) my mom had developed dilated cardiomyopathy that had slipped into heart failure, had a lupus like reaction to her heart medicine, hydralazine, and was being advised about putting in a pacemaker. Her reaction to Hydralazine was a huge clue in that adverse drug reactions(ADR) to Hydralazine have been widely studied. There were multiple factors associated with risk of having a reaction: female gender, being a NAT2 (a metabolizing enzyme) slow acetylator, and being HLA-DR4 positive. HLA-DR4 had also been associated with dilated cardiomyopathy, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, a poorer response to EBV, and according to some studies, CFS. My mom and I asked to be tested for HLA-DR4 and were positive. My test further looked at specific HLA-DR4 alleles. Once we knew our HLA, it led us to the right medication for mom and the high affinity IgE receptor autoantibody test for me. While HLA are only associated with risk of developing certain diseases or ADR and couldn't tell us for certain what we might have or might get, this test was able to offer us valuable clues. -Laurie
