Random Post to Come Back With but FRICK IT TF2 Got Me in a Headlock Right Now
Why I like to think Soldier is from Wyoming.
So I know the official bio says he's from the Midwest region:
And Wyoming is NOWHERE on that list:
I think this actually works in my theory's favor.
Look, we all know Soldier is supposed to be a mega patriot, America's biggest fanboy that worships anything with so much as a sniff of the name attached to it.
And yet, he doesn't seem all that knowledgeable about the country he's a Ride and Die for.
It's like...he's reciting a script or something without truly knowing the context.
And that's where Wyoming comes in baby.
For those who don't know (or just forgot), Wyoming is an actual state that actually exists despite the scant evidence of it so. (Seriously, I never hear sht about this state--Vermont too.) Wyoming is predominantly part of the Rocky Mountain Region of the US and has an area 97,813 square miles (253,335 square kilometers)--making it the 10th largest state.
Despite that accomplishment as of July 1 of 2024 there's only roughly a population of 587,618 people. Tiny, little baby Rhode Island has more than DOUBLE that amount despite being the smallest state in the US. Why?
Because sweeping amounts of Wyoming are barren
Despite it's region, a good amount of Wyoming is just high-altitude, plain grassland with hours worth of distance between towns and cities (yes they exist). Not too many people are rushing to live here sadly. Add every natural disaster known to man (flooding, wildfires, blizzards, landslides, etc), brutal winters, unforgiving summer heat waves, droughts, wildlife that could kill you (especially bears), people just straight up disappearing/dying, and limited internet access and you'll understand why even the locals will tell you why you probably shouldn't move there. There's also only two escalators in the whole state (supposedly).
So where does Soldier fit into all of this? I present the following headcanon:
I think Wyoming being the forgotten stepchild of America can help explain why Soldier is so out of touch with the rest of the country--and why it's the same to him. Wyoming attracts little to no attention from the US at large. Thus, I believe in the TF2 universe, Wyoming would essentially be a shadow state that despite being counted as part of the 50, somehow no one can truly ascertain what or where it is. It's a region all of its own that eludes time and space where few find it, and even fewer leave it.
Soldier is one of the latter.
Born and raised to people long-forgotten in a home lost to the universe, our brave boy grew up on a farm and all the daily terrors that came with it. With the little contact from the outside world he had, he tried reading any available books like the Bible (as instructed by his family) and The Hobbit (written in 1937) with mixed results. At some point, he managed to get a TV that played limited outdated films and documentaries, which could be why he's familiar with popular actors like Burt Lancaster (who only became an actor at 32 after serving in WW2) and knows weird trivia like Libby, Montana and its connection with eagles, but somehow not the fact that New York is a part of America. Over time he'd manage to somewhat familiarize himself with this magical place of America and grow to love his idealized version of it. A land of freedom and opportunity away from his grassy purgatory with winds and bears that want to tear you apart.
But what would really get him excited is the major event that is World War 2. The notion of his beloved America fighting against tyrannical powers that seek to destroy everything it stood for would set him on edge; war propaganda and calls to arms would stir his passion so greatly, that he'd seek to bust out of the Wyoming Limbo and into the rest of the US and world at large. He'd promise he'd return home when the battle's over, shed no tears...he'd return.
It's when he marches to the nearest military wing to enlist, that he's bequeathed the name Jane Doe since he either refused to or can't give a name of his own. He also can't pick out where he's from on any known map, so they just go by his accent and label him as from the "Midwest". Unfortunately, his info being outdated, and he being deranged would deny him his chance to defend his country and at this point the poor people just want this lunatic out of their building. So do all the other branches. So what's a patriot to do but scrape up some dough and go your dang self?
After that stunt in Poland, Mann Co comes knocking and decides that they can use this loon and the rest is history.
It'd also explain why he's so comfortable at being airborn...
And why he's so unafraid of bears.
Hmmm, lives in a mountainous death-trap with sometimes punishingly cold weather and a notable threat of bears. Why does that sound soooo familiar?
P.S. I just discovered that there are multiple places in Wyoming called "Lost Soldier" (it kept happening a lot) including a district and a uranium mine. Make of that what you will.
I wonder if we should add another to the list...
