HMS Furious's technician Bob Cotcher applies inscription to a 1,600-pound bomb carried by the Fairey Barracuda torpedo bomber during Operation Tungsten. April 1944.

The operation involved an attack by carrier-based aircraft from five British aircraft carriers on the German battleship Tirpitz on April 3, 1944.

Edwin Harris Dunning

August 2 1917 #OTD Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) Squadron Commander Edwin Harris Dunning becomes first pilot to land a plane, a Sopwith Pup, on a moving ship, the HMS Furious. Crew greets him after the successful landing.

Five days later, August 7 1917, these pictures show another, fatal, attempt to land on deck of HMS Furious. The crash knocked him unconscious and he drowned.

Squadron Commander Edwin Harris Dunning landing his Sopwith Pup on the deck of HMS Furious, 1917.

Dunning became the first pilot to successfully land a plane on a moving ship, succeeding in doing so twice before being killed on his third attempt when his plane went off the end of the landing deck.
