Track #3-60: Call of the Warrior
NOTE: This upload is the artist's original mix, and thus differs from the mix featured on the album.
Artist: Vincent Rubinetti featuring The Reddit Symphony Orchestra
Original: Crateria Surface; Theme of Samus Aran, Space Warrior by Kenji Yamamoto
Length: 5:11 (Original), 5:12 (Redux)
The theme "Crateria Surface" from Super Metroid previously got a gentle piano cover titled "Remembering Who I Am" on the 101% Run album by the inimitable Mercurial. This time, the theme is covered in a brass-led orchestral style by Vincent Rubinetti. The cover hews relatively closely to the original's movements in the first half. A suspenseful bridge quotes the Theme of Super Metroid (the theme that would eventually become Samus's own) to usher in the second half, which supports the orchestra with a choir. The choir sings in latin (english translations included):
Venator (Hunter) Contra omnes (Against All) Tenebrae nocte conplent (Darkness fills the night) Lux accendit abyssum (Light illuminates the abyss) Tenebrae nocte conplent (Darkness fills the night) Lux accendit abyssum (Light illuminates the abyss) Fulgur tangit (Lightning strikes) Fulgur tangit (Lightning strikes) Et ascendam (I will rise) Nox de igni et ira (Night of fire and fury) Nox de igni et ira (Night of fire and fury) Erit victor fortisque (I will be mighty and victorious) Erit victor fortis- (erit victor fortisque) (I will be mighty and victorious) Nox de igni et ira (Night of fire and fury) Nox de igni et ira (Night of fire and fury) Erit victor fortisque (I will be mighty and victorious) Erit victor fortis- (erit victor fortisque) (I will be mighty and victorious) Bellum perpetuum (Eternal war) In nocte (In the night) Et ascendam (I will rise)
The remix ends by quoting the Super Metroid: Sound In Action album's arrangement of the theme. The album release also includes a remaster called "Call of the Warrior Redux" for Super Metroid's 30th anniversary.
Both mixes of this song are just masterful. This remix brings additional instrumentation and fuller sound to Super Metroid's most heroic song. All the new additions, like the quote of Samus's theme and the chorus, just make the remix more powerful, and the deep cut reference to Sound In Action (more recently known for its remix of Samus' theme making it into Metroid Prime 4: Beyond) really ties the whole thing in a neat little bow. This remix is reminiscent of the Tourian medley "Te Inveniam" from the 101% Run album, and, as a remix of the theme following Mother Brain's boss theme that also features latin lyrics, can be thought of as a spiritual sequel. While the earlier remix of "Crateria Surface" was gorgeous for its introspective tone, this one benefits by going for bombasm, being downright awesome in the original sense of the word as a synonym for fearsome. This is the remix that reminds you that this song was the original "Theme of Samus Aran, Space Warrior".
