The tension in the confrontation between a homosexual and an individual who considers himself normal is created by the instinctive question in the mind of the 'normal' individual: 'Does he desire me?' “Homosexuality is first of all, and will perhaps for a short while continue to be, a category of criminality. Personally, I prefer this state of affairs to its probable transformation into a psychiatric category of deviance. The libidinal link between the criminal and homosexual figures ignores the rational concepts of law, the divisions of individual responsibilities and the distribution of roles between victims and murderers. A homosexual murder is a whole, complete unto itself.”
In this largely overlooked essay, the “father” of queer theory decries with eerie prescience the “respectablization” of homosexuality, and its complete integration into the circuits of bourgeois life. Written in response to the murder of Pier Pasolini at the hands of a “swindler”, Hocquenghem juxtaposes the brutal death of the openly gay Pasolini with the peaceful passing of the fascist Franco to make an impassioned case for holding together the “ancient, and very strong bond between the homosexual and his murderer” against the normalizing pressures of legality and respectability. As an early indictment of the push for gay assimilation from one of queer theory’s most radical voices, We Can’t All Die in Bed is essential reading for all current and aspiring criminal queers.

Not only does the social body accuse me of a desire that it refuses in terror, but it also accuses me of becoming paranoid about it. Yet where is the desire for persecution stronger, in the accuser or in the persecuted? The persecution of homosexuality has its source in a homosexual desire. Whether they are passionate or scientific, all attitudes towards homosexuality are homosexual attitudes. When repression pursues a desire, it does so according to all acceptations of the term: it is obsessed about it, it tries to attain it, it runs for it and always lags behind, and it determines it as its goal.

It must, of course, extend way beyond those structures known or unknown to sexual desire, and it must also have curbed the desire to be desired, which supposes that we start desiring ourselves well. The desire to desire and to be desired, that's love, finally wrenched from the fetor of bourgeois humanism as well as from the childishness of mystical liturgies. My weakness is not to believe in it, like a believer, but to see in it like a seer my desire as it ceases to repeat itself. What joy when I intercept it in its movements, just as it switches between machines! The desire that says "Why not?" rather than "No." The desire that shoots its refusals one by one.
