17-year old Hongjoong was alone, wandering the halls of KQ for months thinking he was being scammed. Then they showed him a picture of Yunho and Hongjoong was convinced he was too good to be true 😂
Last time when i did an interpretation of Yunho's MV i mentioned an essay i wasn't ready to post yet, well here it is... Yeeeyy
I wrote this a few months ago, and i kept it in the drafts cause i didn't know how to articulate certain things properly but also because... well writing these kind of reads, it is a very subjective process. Essays or meta reads about idols/real people in general are always very dependant on our own perceptions of the world, on our own values and contexts and sometimes they end up telling us more about the writer than the person they're writing about.
I decided to post this anyway because i felt like i owed it to myself (for reasons™). and also because i want to write more, and this piece works more or less as a basis of everything i might want to bring up in the future.
To give you more important context about me as well, i am not a westerner, english is my third (fourth ?) language, I do not speak korean but i am learning to understand both the language and the culture. And i work in the entertainment industry.
Eveything i write forward is subjected to change as more information about the teezers come to light and as my own opinion and perspectives on different topics grow. This is all based on MY perception, it is VERY subjective. Take it all with a grain of salt.
---------- The following words have been written at least a month ago
When it comes to kpop I have been into it for 2 years now, stray kids opened the doors for me and Ateez dragged me on their vessel. I have been a Yunho Ult for a little more than one year (love at first sight y'all), and this man genuinely fascinates me. Part of it, i think, is because for the longest time i didn't understand why.
I could list you a billion reasons on why Changbin/Lee know/Han are my stray kids biases but i had such a big issue figuring out why Yunho was my ULT until the last 5 months or so. This essay ? meta read ? piece of writing ? love letter ? (idk wtf to call this), is gonna explore one facet of why i find Jeong Yunho sooooooooooooo interesting as a person.
OKEY let's get into it !
section 1 : versatility
Unlike other members who stand out by how overtly expressive they are, how stark the contrast between their on&off stage persona is or how charismatic, beautiful, socially perceptive or humorous they are. I find that Jeong Yunho stands out precisely by.... not standing out ?
Hear me out i promise it will make sense later on.
That is not to say that yunho isn't any of these things, on the contrary he is one of the most all rounder idols i could think of however he just happens to be in a group where there are very strong “immediate attention grabbers”.
People tend to notice San, Mingi or Wooyoung first, who are much more flashier and louder in the way they present themselves and perform (i don't even need to go into more details here). Hongjoong cements himself with his position as the leader and a charismatic one at that. Jongho as one of the best vocalists of his generation if not the best. Seonghwa and Yeosang stand out through their visuals: Seonghwa with his androgyny and growing reputation as a fashion icon, and Yeosang through the "quiet mystique of his reserved/enigmatic presence".
If you think of ateez as their popular tropes/images, compared to the "walking statue of ateez", "The captain", "the grand northern duke", "Mother™"...etc Yunho is known as "the boy next door", "golden retriever", "the boyfriend of ateez." All seemingly softer, more grounded tropes that don’t immediately scream intensity or spectacle.
But that's exactly where his 'je ne sais quoi' lies. Yunho's magic and power lies in the details, in the way he listens, watches, and responds— and part of it is also in his ability to blend in.
Which is something most of us technically already heard from him :
"I think my charm is being versatile."
In the past, he primarily used that term 'versatile' to describe his voice and singing. Being able to sing at a wide range, to adapt his tone and delivery depending on the mood of the song, or even to subtly support another member’s part without drawing focus. The term could as well be used to describe his dance style. As a main dancer and dance leader part of his job was making sure everyone had a cohesive and synchronized presence on stage, and Yunho did this not just by leading, but by adapting.
It's something he brought up very briefly in his 2025 Marie Claire interview :
"From the beginning, I felt like I had to see the whole picture and stay within the lines when matching choreography."
(We'll talk about his desire to stand out in more details later)
Yunho's versatility translates into his performances by effortlessly (it's really not) switching in intensity, and matching his energy again to the concept of each song, as well the members around him. Yunho acts as an anchor: not only does he perform the choreography as it is meant to be learned, but he also stabilizes the group, providing a reliable foundation that allows other members to shine.
And though it's less frequently highlighted, Yunho's versatility extends well beyond the stage and performances.
Section 2 : Relational (man idk how to title those)
The term “communal boyfriend” was coined by fans largely because of how loved Yunho is by his members. Pairings like Hohong, Yunhwa, Yunsang, Yunsan, Yunwoo, Yungi, and 2Ho are all fairly popular. Some more than others, of course, but if you look them up on SNS, you’ll find a decent amount of content for each. Yunho has a good connection with every member, and he seemingly cares for all of them pretty equally (debatable)— too equally, according to a certain member. And Mingi isn’t even the only one who fights for Yunho’s attention; he’s just the most vocal about it.
There’s one moment that really stands out to me on this topic, and it was during the Towards The Light Europe tour. Around the Paris and Brussels stops, during the song 'Wave,' a playful altercation kept happening between San, Wooyoung, Mingi, and Yunho. It was all lighthearted, of course, but I distinctly remember a moment when someone got jealous of Yunho holding hands with one of the members— either Wooyoung or Mingi— Yunho tried to fix it by holding hands with the other, but somewhere along the way, San started feeling left out. The whole thing kept escalating in this playful, dramatic way until Yunho resolved it the only way he could: by making everyone hold hands and walk down the metaphorical aisle together.
A happy ever after ending, with Yunho once again at the center, ensuring harmony between the teezers.
Since the clips were mostly posted on twitter and the moment was scattered across multiple stops i couldn't get hold of all the footage, hence my faulty memory, but you can find some of it here and here.
There were many ways he could’ve handled the situation. But Yunho observed the tension, and his instinct wasn’t just ‘How can I make the other person feel included?’ it became, ‘How can I make everyone feel included? It lead me to beleive that at some point yunho's inclination for harmony and balance might not be just a stage performer thing but something he carries into his personal interactions as well.
Like in this moment with mingi and Hongjoong :
It's a very funny moment during a variety show where yunho gets caught playing both sides (siding with mingi then later on siding with hongjoong), and gets publically called out for it. "He's got the key." Hongjoong says. (Yeah he really fuckin does you have no idea) Yunho then proceeds to bring up how close him and mingi are in a 'oh ive known him for 10 years so its fine if am lil bit of bitch to him sometimes' kind of way.
[keyman of ateez] [hidden mastermind] [yunho's fickle heart] Unfortunately there does seem to be a price to maintaining harmony.
Another moment that comes to mind as well is the one that's from the Counseling Center episode from 2 years ago. The one where Yunho admits:
"I don't treat people whom i like and whom i don't like differently. i think i just draw a line. [...] and i'm not one to complain about other people's rudeness, I think we can develop our relationship more and more as we get to know each other."
A moment that sheds light on why Mingi later on, in a different variety show, asked to be treated more specially than others. Yunho is too kind to everyone, he wants to be treated more special !
Or what works as a strength for the group can just as easily come off as a personal shortcoming.
Section 3 : "Our atiny !"
I've been a Yunho Ult for a while now. I've subscribed to his fromm and Toktoq lives for the duration of a year and if there's one thing i noticed is how consistent this man feels. He's on fromm pretty regularly, an average of 2 days per week. and he'll try and do at least one live every 10 days ranging from 20 to 30 min. And while he never really delves fully in depth in any particular topic. His lives do have a regular structure : greeting atiny, talking about whatever event that happened recently and his (mostly positive) feelings around it, mentioning mingi for god knows what reasons, sometimes he'll talk about his interests as well (gaming/spiderman), words of thanks, if he's feeling particularly teasing that day he'll roleplay jealousy and romance with atiny (it's for some reason been more frequent recently) followed by photo time, then hatyu of the day, where he'll spend 30 extra seconds reading atiny's comments/looking at chat fondly before turning off his live.
And while i don't understand korean except for a few words here and there, there's a reason i watch his lives everytime : they have a certain cadence and rythm that is so repetitive and predictable but engaging enough to keep me hooked.
Yunho is my version of cocomelon. (chat i have autism)
But that's the thing, this is is my perception of him. To me, this predictability is soothing… his structures reads as stability and consistency. To others that exact same repetition might feel emotionally shallow. Compared to other idols or even his members, Yunho can come across as distant. Too structured. Too bland. Too 'idol like'. Not 'real' enough ? He is a doll isn't he ?
section 4 : What does it mean to be an idol ?
It's a job ! They get paid for it ! cool !
A very demanding job and It fascinates me to see how each of them navigate it. Being an idol is already taxing enough for its physical labor, let alone with the additional overwhelm of the emotional one. Smile, be polite, wave, don’t be too performative, but don’t be too authentic either. How to maintain boundaries while fostering connection ? How to balance public and private self ?
How do you manage pleasing everyone while still maintaining pieces of yourself?
section 5 : Yunho the bias wrecker.
You know earlier when i said yunho stands out by not standing out ? well part of it is an exageration cause i needed a way to introduce this meta read. but also not really.
There's a reason why he's everyone's bias wrecker. and there's even more reasons why it's a phenomenon that happens mostly on Tour.
Live performances are the culmination of everything Yunho. It’s where you can see him dance, hear him sing, and watch him anchor the group while subtly regulating and connecting with the members. It’s where he’s jumping around and being happy and cute, but also sexy, dark, and teasing. It's where he's pulling the others and making them join for 1 on 1 dances (DLBW) or visibly being playful with each one of them. Live performances are Yunho's playground and the reason it hits people so hard is that you don’t really notice all of this in variety shows, music videos, or other Ateez content but when yunho is in his element you have no other choice but to pay attention.
Yunho isn’t invisible, But sometimes, within group performances or team dynamics, he naturally fades a bit into the background. He’s not the loudest, the flashiest, or the most emotionally raw member but what he is, is consistently present. It’s why he’s always in the background of every Woosan moment — The man is always aware and in tune with his surroundings.
It is a different form of leadership and charisma, less flashy but it is an important part of Ateez's structure as a whole, and the reason why he's Hongjoong's right hand man.
section 6 : Ice on My teeth - a new yunho era.
"There was something I personally struggled with. From the beginning, I felt like I had to see the whole picture and stay within the lines when matching choreography. But through our recent world tours, I've been slowly breaking out of that mindset. People often say my lines are clean and my movements detailed, but these days, I've been focusing more on creating my own style of expression. With experience, both I and the members have become freer in our performances—especially recently. Before, I used to just work hard. Now, I try to work hard and look cool doing it"
Marie clare 2025 interview, Yunho
The full answer is actually very telling when it comes to Yunho’s growth and what he’s striving for as a performer. In people (especially artists and performers), versatility means being able to adapt, shift styles, moods, skills, or roles effortlessly and effectively. True versatility tho isn’t just about knowing how to blend in, it’s also about knowing when to stand out.
"Ice on My Teeth" offered a fully repackaged Yunho. In a way, they reintroduced his image: they dyed his hair a very dark blue, and the group adopted a new, more sophisticated styling, one that particularly suited Yunho. His lines in the album Golden Hour: Part 2 were all killer parts. He opened the title track with a lower vocal tone and a smooth choreo. He had his first solo dance stage, and since then, it's all been going upwards. First solo magazine shoot, first solo acting debut (short film/drama), first OSTs... He posted more dance content in Reels format. He’s also been growing in confidence and it shows —he’s happier on stage, he freestyles way more, he's more confident, and more flirty/bold with ATINY.
I'm sure opening their own solo Instagram accounts also had a play in this but where is this going ? what ?
One thing is sure tho, Yunho still doesn’t completely know where he wants to take his image (i wrote this 2 months ago i don't think this still stands btw). He’s still experimenting and learning what ATINY likes about him, and what he's comfortable doing. But if you consider the styling since Lemon Drop (a bit before too) he’s been playing with way more textures and looks, edgier and darker than his usual color palette but also more fitted clothing. The 'in Your Fantasy' stages also show him trying out sexier gestures. He’s constantly showcasing his hands, his neck, and that toungue in cheek move he does. He's also been trying to stay 'in character' more often and seriously.
---------- Cutting a line here because this is present me talking
section 7 : I COOKED
I don't know how to write the conclusion for this. It's so hard to give it any form of conclusion cause i technically touched on so many different topics. I will try my best to at least round the corners to give you a better understanding of what i'm seeing.
Before that tho let's bring up this moment from Artist+ that i feel really sums up what kind of person Yunho is.
Hongjoong and Wooyoung get asked who's the most different on and off stage and somehow the conversation leads to Yunho
HJ : In the past he was more...even in private, he was really trying very hard to seem like a sunny person, and then when he was just with the members he'd quiet down. But lately, in a good way, it seems he knows he needs some time to think by himself, so he takes that time. And even when he's with the members he doesn't force himself to act energetic. I can see that he's seriously thinking over things and when he's meeting our fans in public he still does a good job and is as sunny as ever. It feels like he's pacing himself well. In a good way.
YH : I think i really agree. i've been like that lately and also since last year, or the year before. I've begun to self reflect a bit and work on myself. And after that i feel like i've become able to control my energy better ? But it's like more than being negative for me it was...
HJ : So in the past to be honest we kept loading yunho with this burden of being "The energetic guy" but the truth is that everyone has times where they're tired. During dance practices too he kinda forced himself to be like that.
YH : The fact that Hongjoong recognised and talked about this. i'm really grateful
HJ : It really isn't easy to try and raise the energy of a room. But lately it's actually like he can sense when to do it, when he can hype it up and when he can step away for a little. He can manage that. And as a bystander i was happy to see that. [...]
YH : [...] So i think that's why i could keep up that positive energy for a much longer time, and have it right now too
It keeps going for a little bit before yunho proudly says "i'm really happy".
This clip dropped after i wrote the first half of the essay so hearing it made me reallly excited because it was in line with what i had already written beforehand.
From the beginning, Yunho has been Ateez’s steady anchor, maintaining their energy, reading the room, and adjusting himself for the group’s sake. Whether through dance, performances, or relationships, Yunho always seemed to operate from an intuitive understanding of balance. He knew when to amplify and when to fade, when to reach out and when to step back. But the cost of such sensitivity is that, at times, it can blur the lines between self and role, between Yunho the person and Yunho the anchor.
And yet, what Hongjoong describes in that interview, and what we’ve seen over the past year, stated a shift. Yunho is no longer only reading the room but he’s also learning to read himself. He’s still the same person who strives for harmony, it's just that now he’s learning to hightlight and include himself within that harmony.
When I first said Yunho stands out by not standing out, I didn’t realize how true that was really. But after watching his slide to me MV, i can confidently say that his entire artistry lies in modulation, in finding the dynamic balance between presence and composure, connection and distance, desire and restraint... In simpler terms, It's the tension he's learning to play with.
The more I learn about him, the more i understand that his strength has never been about intensity, it is about intention. And it's unfortunately the reason why he's the bias wrecker not the bias.
Yunho specifically exists in a way that highlights how perception works, how someone can do everything right, be really well loved and still quietly overlooked. And the perception of an idol is just as important as their actual skill or charisma. Because in an industry built on immediacy and spectacle, subtlety doesn’t necessarily register as mastery.
You will learn to look tho, eventually. He'll make sure of it.
So when people say they bias Yunho, I think, a lot of the time, what they're drawn to is this tension, the sense that he's giving us everything and holding back at the same time. That he feels steady, kind and sincere yet somehow guarded and out of reach (and not just because he's an idol). Yunho performs openness yes, but always on his own term.
Or something idk again.
yeyyy !!!
For even more silly breakdowns you can patiently wait for my next piece of writing cause I'm already cooking a third essay about him. If you want a hint it's about the 'he didn't know where to take his image' part. Chat was I tripping when I wrote that ? You can find out in the next one !!!
All of these are not my own, just spreading love for other fic writers. Also if any of these ao3 writers have tumblrs too lemme know to link them too! Ive linked the ones ik/remember. Alternatively if someone wants thir blog removed from here, lemme know <3
