A Daily Something; herb roasted olives
FMLS90 Week 7 Day 1 11/18/19
How does holiday food play a role in your fitness journey? Do you have any positive or negative traditions that impact your journey? Share one of both.
Food doesn’t play into my holidays as much as it does for a lot of people, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t play at all. I’d argue there are three times most years that it’s a real factor:
Friendsgiving. I think most people are familiar with this, basically it’s a Thanksgiving dinner with friends. Ours is this coming Saturday, and since I also live in the same town as my family, it does mean I’ll have two Thanksgiving dinners within a week. I’d argue this one is the bigger deal and when I’m more likely to eat way too much, since everyone is bringing something and I’ll want to try it all, plus my friends and I literally don’t do anything without beer so we probably won’t be sober. But it’s only one night, it’ll be fine.
Thanksgiving. This the big holiday for my family. Of my generation, several of us don’t have children, and most of the ones who do live pretty far away (and/or do most holidays with their spouse’s family) and let’s face it, family holidays with no kids around are just kinda meh (not meh enough that I’m willing to have my own kids or anything, but meh). But my sister comes up with her kids for Thanksgiving and not usually for Christmas, so this is the one time a year we go big with all the traditional stuff. It’s smaller than Friendsgiving because my family is smaller, but it is the second big meal I’ll be eating in less than a week.
Company Christmas Party. I mentioned that my friends and I don’t do anything without alcohol, well neither does work. We have learned a few hard lessons over the years about the food to liquor ratio at the Christmas party, but the one thing that never changes is that “dinner” is heavy appetizers and the bar is open. This is actually the opposite of the above, instead of keeping in mind what I’m eating so it isn’t too much, I need to keep it in mind to make sure it’s enough that I don’t spend another Christmas party night sleeping in my party dress on my bathroom floor (2014 was a total shit show...).
Other than that, holidays are pretty scaled down for me. My family, especially my mom, doesn’t really buy in to the “must make Christmas cookies” or the huge meals for every single holiday. And while the free booze at the Christmas party does mean we all tend to drink slightly more than usual, the number of events that include drinking aren’t more than usual, we just dress better for them.
The most comforting, delicious mini bowls of creamy leftover turkey pot pie goodness with a savory herbs de provence and gruyere pie crust.

Im just really fucking proud of myself for not binge eating my way through any holiday functions, including today. I stuck to my plan of healthy foods and no giant portions and I feel so good!! I even went for a post meal stroll with my sister. Normally holidays are so bad and so triggering, they can set off a down spiral that will last weeks BUT I NAILED TODAY YOU ED ASSHOLE.
