A most charming collector friend of mine in Toronto sent me pics of his painting, Duality (from my HOLIDAY EVERYDAY series), installed on the walls of his brand new condo. I love how the painting works in this space, and can be seen from both the second story mezzanine, as well as from the main floor… it’s a gorgeous, light-filled space, and the colors seem to dance across the canvas. Commission accomplished! The client wanted bold, saturated colours on this large, vertical piece called “Duality”. He was interested in expressing a sense of ying and yang, so I painted calm, smooth, horizontal at the bottom that gradually start to move, as they travel upwards towards the top of the canvas... it reminds me a lot of an ocean. As a former scuba diver, I remember well the movement of the water, where deep below the surface, all appears calm, despite existing currents. As one approaches the surface, the water becomes choppier... Perhaps a metaphor for life? My life? Yours? Everyone’s? Colors mesmerize me in a way that is difficult to describe. When I get started on a painting, it has a way of occupying my mind the same way that a puzzle does: searching for just the right combination of colors to come, working them out. There’s a certain intuitive logic to my game, and I find it hard to articulate, at times. It’s innate. My painting l, Like a Halo, was one of these “puzzles” of logic.
