Tree Hugging
I’m not a holly tree anymore,
The spines became curtains,
The smooth surface disturbed,
But hugging on is in my mind.
I can’t remember what I said,
Know I broke off a sentence,
Left a teacher and friend standing,
Just to hug this holly tree,
Then rationalise its comfort.
It was protection and soft centers,
That’s how I viewed them then,
How I imagined myself becoming.
Before that and sometimes now,
It was the willow trees I loved,
Curtaining the world away,
But no defence beyond that.
But that holly tree was special,
It was there when I needed a tree,
Needed natures support.
I’ve hugged many trees since that day,
But that holly tree will stay in my memory,
Will forever be the tree I hugged
Which hugged me in return.
