Photographers Research - Holly Andres

Holly Andres is a fine art and commercial photographer known for her stylized cinematic scenarios often inspired by her own childhood memories, these include the “complexities of childhood, the fleeting nature of memory, and female introspection”. Her work has appeared in galleries and museums from Barcelona, Istanbul and Bogota, to New York, San Francisco and Atlanta with viewers drawn to her often dark and mysterious or bright and witty photographs.

Andres regularly photographs editorial assignments for many prestigious publications including The New York Times Magazine, TIME, The New Yorker, and The California Sunday Magazine, while her fine art has been featured in Art in America, Artforum, Exit Magazine, Art News, Modern Painters, British Journal of Photography, PDN, American Photo, Oprah Magazine, Glamour, Bust, and Art Ltd. Which profiled her as one of the 15 emerging West Coast artists under the age of 35.

Her work has earned her numerous grants and awards including the 2016 PDN Photo Annual in Advertising for a campaign she made in collaboration with Saks Fifth Avenue and Refinery29, as well as AI-IP American Photography awards for features in The California Sunday Magazine and TIME.

I am personally a fan of her work due to the fact that her more mysterious and darker work speaks to me, as I consider myself a rather dark photographer too. I notice how she uses a lot of nature and landscape in her photography, and alongside having a rather dark and mysterious feel to my work, I also really enjoy nature and landscapes in photography, as it was probably obvious in some of my previous posts.

I also featured two of her pieces in my Task 5 work for Michelle, using her as an example of photo’s that had a retro or vintage feel to them to inspire me for my rebrand Facebook project.

I had the great honor to collaborate for an amazing cause. For 8 weeks in the months of September and October, I traveled to Hillsboro, Oregon every Monday to meet with 10 latina women to make art. These brave, beautiful, warrior latinas shared their stories and their time with me. The art we made is for #AnEveningOfEsperanza, a fundraiser gala benefitting @bienestaror, an organization that supports immigrant families and helps them have safe, affordable housing. I was brought into this project by the amazing Megan Diana @i.like.leo (songbird, musician extraordinaire and the genius behing @pianopushplay) and I cannot wait to experience tonight’s event. The super talented @esperanzaspalding will perform a never been heard before music she wrote based on these women. Task 5

Critically compare a range of primary and secondary research sources.

When it comes to research, there are two kinds of sources; primary and secondary. Primary sources are first-hand accounts of a topic whereas secondary sources are any account of something that is not a primary source. Published research, newspaper articles and other media are typically secondary sources. Secondary sources, however, can cite both primary and secondary sources.

Data from a primary source is the ideal kind of data to collect. This is due to the fact that the closer we can get to an original account of the target information or an event, then the more accurate that information will be. Primary source data is most important when research is being conducted or when someone is trying to gain a deeper understanding of a situation as it contains the original evidence.

As an example of all of this, you could take into consideration that only last month Hurricane Michael hit florida and caused a lot of damage and devastation to the citizens and the state. If a reporter were to go and interview one of the people who had to suffer through this tragic ordeal, that would be an example of a primary source. Whereas if I were to to go online and search about it because I wanted to know what had happened then that would be an example of a secondary source.

I believe that for my piece of work, due to the fact that I primarily used the internet, that the majority of my work came from secondary sources, although I don’t feel as though my grade for this unit will be effected by this, simply because I was still able to complete my work thoroughly, and with the aid of my teacher informing me that my idea and notes were good enough as a form of information. 

My first and main search up was of a colour palette for what kinds of colours I’d use for logo rebrand, and it was almost immediately that I found the colours that I had wanted to use. The reason I chose colour first was because I was curious as to what kinds of colours would come up when I searched different palettes, and because I knew that it was the one of if not the most important aspect of my logo. I would’t have been able to buy the resources I needed to create my stop motion if I hadn’t decided on a particular colour palette to follow. The palette I found was a photo on Google Images, and it came from a website called colour-hex, which seemed to be a place where people created or posted pictures of palettes or different kinds of paints and colours that people could then download if they made an account and go on to use it for their work. This made me believe that this was a secondary source, because there was nothing that came to say that the colours I was looking at for inspiration were created by the person who had posted them to their account, and there was no indication that the colours hadn’t been made by the person so I decided that it would be safer if I were to deem it a secondary source.

A second source that was primary was the fact that I searched up different photographers that had a retro/vintage old feel to their work and found one in particular that I absolutely loved. Her name is Holly Andres and from what I saw when I inspected her work, I realised that she seemed to love taking photos with nature, although there was always something off about them. I’ve attached two of her photos which I deemed as my favourite due to the fact that I was immediately drawn to them. All of my favourite pieces of hers seemed to come from a series she had made called ‘The Fallen Fawn’, which all of them had a very similar vibe and so it was very easy to see how they all correlated with one another in some way.

I knew this was a form off primary work due to the fact that she was featured on a slightly famous and known website called Jackson Fine Art, which is used to feature different photographers with very similar vibes or looks that related with a retro or vintage look.
