Observations on The Only Me I Know (1/5 The Answers)

First of all, we have the alteration to the intro, foreshadowing the reveal about Nemesis shortly into the episode.

And then we have Miranda raising some good questions.

And Chase doesn’t have the answers. A lot of questions about identity come from this episode. It seems we have a bit of a Ship of Theseus to ponder (if you don’t know what that means google it).

Here’s another thing I noticed. I don’t know if I just didn’t pick up on it, or if we’ve never seen her from this angle in this out fit, but Cammie keeps tools in her pockets.

Not really important to the plot, just a cute detail I thought was neat.

So this scene turns out to be one giant red herring, considering that’s exactly what they had planned.

Also, check out Jodie. What is he doing with his hands? Guy’s got a shit poker face.

And then we have this scene where RT drop their favourite question.

But that just leads into a much more important revelation.

A lot of theories have been going around as to who, or what, Nemesis is. Turns out the most prevalent one had it backwards.

Nemesis isn’t a copy of Chase that thinks it’s the original. It is the original, and our Chase is the copy. Here’s where we find our Ship of Theseus.

Just imagine watching this scene without the narration.

I don’t know how the animation team managed to show so much desperation from Chase here, especially considering he doesn’t even really have a face. All I can say is bravo RT, bravo.

In any event, it seems Waller’s secret has come back to haunt him.

And haunt him it does.

According to [G. G.] Simpson, evolution is either ‘basically materialistic’ (whatever that means in this context) - or else there must be a Purposer, a god; man is either the result of a purposeless process or else he must have been 'planned’ from the beginning. But the term 'purpose’ in its biological context implies neither a Purposer nor a cut-and-dried image of the ultimate goal to be achieved. The predator setting out on its nightly round does not look for a particular rabbit or hare, he looks for likely prey; the chess-player cannot generally foresee or plan the ultimate mate situation: he uses his skill to take advantage of the opportunities on the board. Purposiveness means goal-directed instead of random activity, flexible strategies instead of rigid mechanisms, and adaptive behaviour - but on the organism’s own terms: it does not 'adapt’ to a freezing environment by lowering its body temperature, but by burning up more fuel. In a word, as E. W. Sinnot wrote, purpose is 'the directive activity shown by individual organisms that distinguishes living things from inanimate objects.’ Or, to quote the Nobel Laureate H. J. Muller, 'purpose is not imported into nature, and need not be puzzled over as a strange or divine something else that gets inside and makes life go… it is simply implicit in the fact of biological organization, and it is to be studied rather than admired or 'explained.’ Let me repeat: to talk of 'directiveness’ or purpose in this limited sense, in ontogeny, has become respectable once more; but to apply these terms to phylogeny is still considered heretical (or at least in bad taste). But phylogeny is an abstraction, which only acquires a concrete meaning when we realize that 'phylogeny, evolutionary descent, is a sequence of ontogenies,’ and that 'the course of evolution is through changes in ontogeny.’ The quotations in the previous sentence are actually also by Simpson and contain the answer to his own conundrum about the Purposer behind the purpose. The Purposer is each and every individual organism, from the inception of life, which struggled and strove to make the best of its limited opportunities.

Observations on The Only Me I Know (2/5 The Conversation)

Throughout Nemesis’s appearances, it’s been very clear that it was very unstable.

It speaks much more coherently in this episode, which only reinforces this image.

You get a sense of just how much the Union has messed him up, which breaks Weller’s heart all the more.

The Union seems to have turned Nemesis’ anger towards Weller and the ESU. He seems particularly incensed about being replaced, and the gen:LOCK program continuing without him.

Weller is desperate to help Nemesis, but it doesn’t seem to make much difference.

Of course, chase has his own solution.

He antagonises him.

Maybe not the best choice.
