Unlike Zechariah, who asks for a sign..., she does not even think of questioning the Archangel's word, even though the objection that the human mind raised in the case of the annunciation made to her was of much greater weight than in the case of the one made to Zechariah. There were precedents for the birth of a child through divine intervention; thus were born Isaac, Samson, and Samuel. Never before, however, had it happened for a virgin to give birth. The conception of the Son of God as Man in the Virgin's womb, through the overshadowing of the Holy Spirit (Luke 1:35)... was an absolute novelty. And yet, the Holy Virgin does not question the Archangel's word, nor does she ask for a sign to confirm this word."
