A report by youth homelessness charity Centrepoint has revealed that young people at risk of homelessness are being told by some councils to sleep rough in order to be housed in emergency hotel and hostel accommodation during the pandemic. The shocking report has demonstrated how young people have been forgotten in recent government homelessness guidance and planning, as young people contacting the charity’s helpline said they were given no other choice but to sleep rough in order to access emergency accommodation provided by councils during the lockdown. In recent months and during the lockdown Government support was focused on older rough sleepers, those who have spent years on the streets, without the nuanced consideration of the specific needs of young people. Previously only 1/3 of Centrepoint’s young people had slept rough before the pandemic, but the number of people calling the Centrepoint helpline who are sleeping rough has doubled within three months.
