i love your posts on consumer aesthetics and i wanted to ask since you just posted burger king if you're very familiar with/have any particular thoughts on the burger king kids club. with mcdonalds bringing back mcdonaldland im kind of surprised burger king has never revisited it for nostalgia factor
Thanks! Everyone talks about how cool Taco Bell was in the 90s, while there's NO love at all for how weird Burger King used to be.
For the uninitiated, Burger King had this entire "future" themed rebrand that coincided with the introduction of the Burger King Kid's Club and their time-travelling leader, Kid Vid. You can clearly date this era by the fact that Kid Vid had his own POGs.
I used to be all over this type of 90s Memphis/Nickelodeon stuff when I first got into consumer aesthetics, and if anyone TRULY embodies this era of pseudo-edge, it's Kid-Vid and the BK Kid's Club.
It's a lot of fun retrospectively, but I don't think it was very successful since it was entirely scrubbed from existence only a few years after it was introduced, hence the lack of nostalgia. I only barely remember this stuff and recall it feeling oddly dated even by the 2000s. As a kid I distinctly preferred the subsequent Tamagotchi knockoff "Honbatz" mascots and sleek Y2K halftone rebrand of the stores/packaging.
However, if you or anyone else absolutely loves the aesthetics and 'tude of Kid Vid, I highly recommend checking out Video Power and Bots Master as they share extremely similar vibes.
