Thank you Mary Maher, Mt. Carmel Orphanage, Denver, where both Pete Zarlengo, 94, WWII Normandy Invasion-Omaha Beach, and his fallen brother, Dominic resided years ago. Dominic killed in the Pacific in 1946, interred at the Honolulu Memorial, Hawaii. Was 20 years old. 34,000 service men interred in the Honolulu Memorial, near Pearl Harbor. Am grateful to participate in this 20th year anniversary. The bright red geraniums for the Gold Star families. Pins. Sashes like given to Pete Zarlengo…handwoven with his brother’s name…Thank you Louetta Smith who coordinates all the posters, memorials, volunteers, breakfast, Gold Star Moms, and more. A real tribute for all the Gold Star families from recent conflicts. I met Vietnam brothers on their infamous HARLEYs who helped me with my new search for my late husband’s Blue Water Vietnam Veterans. This is a great city! Mayor Hancock was present. The music was traditional and contemporary. I was touched that these combat vets took the time to help me. Agent Orange exposure. Memorials matter, so we do not forget. We honor and remember. And we cultivate our gardens in peacetime.
The tolling of the Navy bell for each fallen hero was to me the most moving — the unique sound of the bell does toll…for the fallen from Colorado — and for thee.
Solemn.

12:06 AM
I’m driving through the streets of Honolulu, the wind kissing my cheeks, Maroon 5 playing in my eardrums, and I’m realizing that I don’t really know who I am. I know what I am, I know that I am strong, that in the past year I have lost a near 6 year long relationship after moving across the ocean for them and leaving what I knew as my life, only to have my heart broken by their uncertainty. I know that I’ve had to move twice with short notice because of people who weren’t worth the trust I put into them. I know that I was able to work through my fear of allowing myself to love again and be vulnerable with another person and through that find happiness in the most unexpected. Life is so unexpected though isn’t it? You never think things will happen until they do. It’s so much easier to be young and naive and believe that you’re invincible and that love will never leave you broken hearted, but one day you’re 20 sitting on the bathroom floor of the apartment you share with your boyfriend of 5 years bawling your eyes out because he’s telling you that he doesn’t want this anymore. But here’s the best part, are you ready? You survive. You pick up the pieces and you tape them together and drink your dinner for a little while, until one day you realize, you don’t cry anymore at night and that the tape has fallen off but your heart is just fine without it. One day you’ll meet somebody who can see your scars and they’ll calm your fears and hold your hand and reassure you that it’ll all be okay. It’ll be 12:06 am and you’ll be driving home from working a long shift and rather than listening to sad songs and crying, you’ll be screaming the lyrics and smiling because this beautiful new soul in your life makes you want to sing and smile and laugh so hard your lungs hurt. We all survive, we survive because the alternative isn’t an option, because the world is so full of beautiful things that it’d be a shame to not give yourself a chance to see them. Because “I cant live without you” is a childish statement and I’m living a life I never saw coming. And my eyes, they are wide and bright driving these city streets.
