Sometimes it's just you and The Hoof GP against the world
Because I like to ruin my own experience of everything by knowing how the sausage is made, I've been looking into the music of Epidemic Sound, a Swedish stock music company that allows brands and content creators to use their wide variety of stuff for a flat licensing fee.
If you have ever watched a YouTube video or a commercial and heard a song that sounds ALMOST like a good song, but not quite, I promise you it was Epidemic Sound / Epidemic Pop / whatever other delineations they use.
They cover a wide range of genres, but their most popular stuff seems to be...okay, well, imagine if the Chainsmokers did country pop for Christians. Imagine if you were writing lyrics by recycling tired romance clichés, but were at least industrious enough to do that yourself instead of using AI. And then hired some white person with an ethereal EDM voice to sing it. ...Probably someone from Europe who doesn't appreciate how wonky the lyrics are.
...Assuming they don't use AI. They might now. They're old enough that they at least haven't until recently.
I'm not even sure if they "own" this music, or just pay smaller record labels to host it.
I don't want to shit on the artists who do this for a living. It fills a gap. It's a living.
But it also isn't good, by any reasonable definition.
Youtube Music has user-created playlists of this stuff. I assume Spotify does as well.
It's like, better than AI music, because it at least isn't AI music. But only just. And I don't trust that this market isn't totally going that way as soon as it can.
...Yes I only got into this because of the goddamn Hoof GP. This crap is that man's aesthetic at this point. And I am endlessly fascinated by what corporations think "default popular Western music" sounds like, because it always tells you so much about the era in which it was made and who it was trying to appeal to.
Me, peeling potatoes from Walmart, pretending to be the Hoof GP: "And now the problem area becomes apparent, but so far it's trimming away beautifully. What I find next though is quite a shock"
I had to tap out of the Hoof GP finger injury video.
I respect him sharing that.
But I worked in a metal shop for 12 years, where horrible hand injuries were the bane of our existence. And I've had enough to know what those feel like, so seeing what happen to him...
I literally got extremely queasy and couldn't take it anymore.
I am MORE sensitive to it now than I ever was before. Also these aren't fake movie injuries, this is a man slicing into his own real finger flesh with a blade...
Okay. Queasy again.
Yeah. No.
Best of luck on your recovery, Graeme.
I don’t know what it is about hoof trimming that soothes my brain, but it works like a charm every time.
