I'm really thinking with how much Wyll content is missing that maybe his story was big in Upper City & with the content cut they scrambled to throw some stuff together for him to tie up loose ends.
Imagine a big Upper City content release where it's all about Wyll and his connections to people before he left. That he's the key to revealing Gortash's false image and winning over Baldur's Gate? To destroy Gortash with the truth instead of the most anticlimactic fight out of him, Orin & Ketheric.
I think that would be really neat...
