I read Sallust’s monograph on Catiline’s war for school last semester and here’s just a few of my favorite parts • Sallust repeatedly tells us that Catiline is like the finest specimen of humanity (but also that his amorality was spurred and encouraged by Society’s Corruption) • Catiline’s first plan was just to secretly assassinate the elected consuls. (What does that achieve, Lucius) • Catiline gives an inspiring speech to his followers, who, afterwards, ask him what it exactly it is that they’re going to be doing and why • Catiline allegedly binds his followers to him with a blood oath (and Sallust includes a disclaimer that this is possibly untrue) • Catiline had the support of the urban poor but lost it when word got out that he wanted to set fires in the city • Catiline sent his supporters to murder Cicero but when Cicero learned of the plot he protected himself by just... not opening the door for them
