Chapter 1

September 1979

He who has nothing to lose has everything to gain.

The water is freezing, the air not much better; it makes his clothes cling to Regulus’s shivering body as he spits out water and soon begins to vomit, his curly hair sticking to his forehead.

He can still feel the bony hands on his ankles, touching him, pulling him down. He could swear they’re still holding him, but he knows they aren’t; he crawls across the sand away from the lake.

The water burns his lungs; the smell of damp and rotting corpses in the cave is suffocating.

Regulus doesn’t stop crawling until the stones make his hands bleed and his knees ache; he only stops when he sees the sunlight and smells the salt.

He looks down and there it is.

The locket tangled between his fingers, dirty from being dragged along but without a single scratch.

Regulus curls up into a ball and collapses onto his side, hugging his chest; he cries out loud and shakes violently; he knows he must get out of there. Voldemort will know it has been stolen, and it is better for him to be as far away from this place as possible so that Voldemort believes whoever tried to steal it drowned.

But he cannot stand up.

The locket clings to his fingers as if trying to escape from him, to return to the cave where it was safe. Regulus tightens his grip on the chain; with the last of his strength, he drags himself to the edge where the protective barriers end and Apparates.
