In the 1950s, Maila Nurmi, better known as Vampira, hosted The Vampira Show - becoming the first gothic TV hostess and setting the template for everyone who came after. With her impossibly thin waist, jet-black hair, and bone-dry, deadpan humor, she looked like she had stepped straight out of a haunted crypt and onto a television set.
Vampira also became part of B-movie legend when she appeared in Ed Wood’s notorious cult classic Plan 9 from Outer Space (1959), cementing her place in horror history. Even today, her look and persona remain one of the most recognizable images in classic horror culture.
