Starting to be able to pick out some of the differences in how certain animation (well, anime.... doesn't quite apply to American animation) really Looks like it's done by a certain Studio, now thay I've really starting paying attention and appreciating this sort of thing.
I'm doing a rewatch of Mob Psycho II since III is out now, and I just watched the first ep of Chainsaw Man. Both are done by well known animation studios (BONES for Mob Psycho and MAPPA for Chainsaw Man), and both are very pretty in their own right, and full of significant serious/quiet moments as well as action.
But the WAY that action is handled in both shows is completely different. I don't dislike Chainsaw Man's action, but it feels... somehow slower? He's jumping across the room and spinning around attacking people, but the actions aren't snappy enough, it feels heavy and sluggish, and I feel like there's a lot of personality that I EXPECT to be present in the shots that just... isn't?
By comparison, MP100 has really crunchy, quick action sequences, where you can feel the weight of every impact.
And it isn't just these 2 shows either, comparing some of the other MAPPA projects I've seen (Terror in Resonance, Yuri on Ice!!, Attack on Titan...) to other BONES productions (Darker than BLACK, Full Metal Alchemist, My Hero Academia...), the physicality of the way the characters move and (and fight) seems very different from each other.
I know MAPPA did Jujutsu Kaisen, which I haven't seen yet, but I have seen a few clips of some of the fight scenes and tbh it still kinda stays on trend of being too Shiny and not quite crunchy enough? That isn't a negative overall, definitely a taste thing. But it seems consistent so far across studio projects, which is really interesting to me.
