Arthur allowed the stock of his rifle to rest against his knee, movement slow and deliberate as he gave himself just enough time to formulate an ADEQUATE reply. There were many things he could say, least of all something with honesty. But honesty was a little too depressing and fragile for the cowboy to outright say. After all, he was an OUTLAW. Outlaws don't tend to just say their inner most feelings. That was reserved for his journal.

Truth be told, though, he wasn't doing alright. And he hadn't been for a while.

But nevertheless he gave a small, small smile and tipped his head as he drew in a breath. "'course I'm doin' alright, Hosea. Why d'you ask?"

the  words  make  him  FLINCH.  for  a  moment,  arthur  stands  still.  for  a  moment,  he  looks  as  if  he  doesn’t  even  know  how  to  respond.  gaze  flickers  back  and  forth  between  hosea  and  dutch,  and  hands  slowly  ball  into  fists  at  his  sides.  he’s  been  with  them  for  so  goddamn  long  now,  yet  he’s  still  being  referred  to  as  a  CHILD.

how  many  times  has  he  proved  useful  during  their  planning?  how  many  times  would  they  have  been  lost  without  him?

a  deep  breath.  

one,  two,  three.  

“  i’m  not  ...  i’m  not  a  child.  not  anymore,  hosea,  ”    arthur  finally  says,  expression  hardening.      “  you  may  think  i  am,  but  i’m  not.  i  don’t  know  what  i’ve  still  gotta  do  to  prove  that  to  ya,  but  i’m  not  a  kid.  stop  treatin’  me  like  one.  ”      with  that,  he  gestures  back  to  the  map  the  older  men  had  been  pursuing,  adding,    “  you  two  are  going  to  let  me  help.  end  of  discussion.  ”

Eivor knows of the people he runs along with, but they do not care much for turning them in for a reward. No - rather, they are intrigued. Moving their hands from their hips, they slowly raise their hands as if to signal they mean no harm.                         ❝Turning you in would be foolish. You have numbers, and I am just one bounty hunter. I have seen many turn tail when they hear your names, or the foolish ones come after you. No - I just wish to speak to you. Nothing more.❞

Dutch paused before he continued speaking and said something regrettable. He had a REPUTATION to uphold, principles to stand by long since crafted over the harsh and easy years ( however twisted they may be didn't matter, he was an OUTLAW and refused to be a savage ) alike. He drew in a silent breath before raising a hand and then quickly lowering it to his side.

More to say, but a refusal to do so.

He straightened his previously confrontational body language, relaxing as best he could until he appeared to be at ease. His head shook, "No, Hosea. You have done NOTHING wrong."

Heels spun until his back faced his friend, steps taken before he announced: "Walk with me."

“talk to me, okay? i need to know what’s going on.”

she  hasn’t  been  herself  for  days,  there’s  no  denying  that  -  maybe  it’s  the  bitter  cold  (eliza  kardel  was  not  made  for  these  below-freezing  temperatures),  maybe  it’s  the  loss  of  more  than  one  life  that  she’d  grown  fond  of,  or  maybe  it’s  just  ...  everything,  but  eliza  feels  like  she’s  walking  on  eggshells  &  holding  her  breath  at  every  turn  -  it’s  no  shock  that  hosea  has  noticed.  (after  this  many  years,  he  can  read  her  like  a  goddamn  book.) 

with  her  back  turned  to  him,  she  takes  that  extra  second  to  compose  herself  before  facing  the  elder  patriarch  -  choosing  to  blame  her  red  eyes  &  nose  on  the  frozen  air  around  them,  eliza  finally  turns  and  faces  him;       “i’m  f-fine,  hosea  -  i’m  f-fine.”       it’s  a  bold-faced  lie  that  sits  in  the  air  between  them  before  she  gives  in,  just  a  little  bit  more;       “blackwater  -  hosea,  it  didn’t  ...  somethin’  is  off  -  about  everythin’  that  happened.  j-jenny,  davey,  i  -”       eliza  swallows  once,  holding  back  any  further  emotion  and  waving  her  gloved  hand  in  front  of  her  chest,       “-  i’m  worried.  makes  me  nervous  how  shit  went  down  -  we  don’t  even  know  exactly  what  happened.”       /       @hosaea  🤍

eliza  doesn’t  quite  know  what  time  she  rises  from  an  unpleasant  slumber,  if  she  slept  at  all,  or  if  the  night  ever  truly  ended  &  turned  to  morning  -  all  she  does  know  is  that  by  the  time  everyone  in  camp  was  celebrating  sean’s  return,  she  was  deep  into  the  bottom  of  a  brown  bottle  (&  she’s  no  longer  sure  who  handed  it  to  her)  and  she  can’t  get  the  sour,  alcoholic  taste  off  her  tongue.  currently,  she  sits  at  a  table,  head  in  her  hands  as  her  brain  pounds  against  her  skull.  (she  only  notices  hosea’s  presence  by  the  fact  that  he  blocks  the  light  from  her  eyes.)       “shit  -”       mumbled,  ever  so  ladylike,       “-  i  hate  that  irish  bastard.”       only  half  true.       /       @hosaea  🧡
