feat. hoshina soshiro narumi gen
requested
i'm so sorry for how late and rushed this one sounds :(
─ hoshina soshiro
it took a while for the third division officers to reach the conclusion that there's nothing else hoshina is happier about than hearing his last name flitter around the defence force.
not for him, though. it's when they call for you.
to be completely honest, as the son of one of the most prestigious families in kaiju-killing history, marriage has always been a consideration, not out of his own will but for the sake of his family. his father had brought it up a good few years ago, but soshiro was never that interested and neither was soichiro.
when you're out there risking your life, what's the point? the best thing to do is keep to yourself and grow stronger so that you don't ever fall into the horrors of everyone's nightmares.
yet when hoshina soshiro met you, it genuinely changed his world.
now, as a happily married man with a woman who bears his last name, he now understands why love is such a big deal. before, if someone had told him that love makes you do ridiculous things, he would've scoffed, mocking the idea in his mind, but never did he imagine that it would be him so soon.
on top of that, being a vice-captain means your title is exactly the same. to hoshina, there's nothing more hilarious than that, but with the problems that arose from it, you were forced to simply change to 'vice-captain (name)' to avoid any more confusion.
knocking on hoshina’s door, you creep in, shutting it behind you with a small click.
he looks up from his desk, his straight face immediately replaced with a child-like grin people would pay to see.
"well, if it isn't hoshina-san," he chuckles, standing up. he tucks his chair back in with the tip of his feet as he approaches you.
he tries wriggling his arms around your waist, but you deftly swoop in by pushing a massive folder into his hand.
"sorry, hoshina-san," you say, trying your best not to laugh at his defeated expression. "i'm here on delivery duty. these came to me, but i don't think i'm hoshina soshiro."
you point to his name on the papers and he sighs, reluctantly taking it from you. he tosses it onto his desk without a care before leaning forward to bury his face in your neck.
your skin tingles as he presses light kisses in between his words. his bottom lip grazes the spot just above your collarbone and he lifts his finger to trace the inner path of your arm.
"so, ya weren't here to see me," he mumbles with another kiss, "but to just give me something."
"oh, fine, let me take a look at my beautiful husband," you tease, reaching up to delicately take his face in your hands. you brush a thumb over his cheek as he remains unmoving, unimpressed with thin furrowed brows as if he’s pouting, and hoshina soshiro never pouts.
"what're ya doin'," he says, his tone completely flat as he stands still under your control. he ignores your quiet laughs. "are ya tryin' to mess up my face?"
"my husband looks soo handsome no matter what i do," you coo. "have i ever told you that i love your genes?"
he tuts and tilts his head, his face still a mush in your palms. "ya have, and every time ya do, i say i prefer yours more.”
─ narumi gen
sometimes, you joke that narumi's forgotten your name.
every time he comms you, every time he demands anything from you or asks someone where you are, he never uses your first name. you're sure that even the officers of the first division don't know either.
it's always 'vice-captain narumi'. ever since you got married, your family name is simply forgotten as if it got pushed into the back of everyone's heads. narumi is more than adamant on making it known to the entire defence force, even chief itami, that you're his darling wife, his weapon, his woman and life.
if someone dares to mention your first name, he's quick to snap at them. you will not go by anything but narumi (name).
"captain, sir, vice-captain (name) is─"
his words are never sharper and his head never turns as faster. "narumi? she's off duty right now, what do you want?"
it's almost embarrassing when people fumble in front of you, too. you tend to stand there, blinking with your hands behind your back as you wait for your fellow officers to choose a name or title to call you. it's bad that they're overly terrified of narumi's outbursts, but it's not like you're going to give them the same fate of pissing their pants because they used a name you've been given... since birth.
currently and much to his growing stress, you're staying a few nights in tachikawa for a meeting with captain ashiro. he was absolutely devastated when he had to send you off, but he's started to deal with it bit by bit by calling you every night.
you're sprawled out on the guest bed with your phone resting between your ear and shoulder, listening to narumi drone on and on about how dull today was without his player two, you, by his side. he mentions watching kikoru pummel his platoon leaders to a pulp, interrogating kafka in the corridors because they made eye contact and also about hasegawa's habit of cleaning his room without permission. there's not a moment to breathe.
you hear him click his tongue on the line, his voice flat as if he's caught you staring off into space.
"oi, narumi."
you perk up, reaching for you phone. "hello, i'm still here."
"you're ignoring me, aren't you?"
a sigh flows out your mouth. "no, but i'll be honest, i'm getting a bit tired, gen. i'll call you tomorrow?"
there's an echoing groan that you can practically sense from miles away, but his voice returns in a second.
"you little─you don't even want to call me, huh?"
you rest your head on your arm, letting it dangle off the bed. closing your eyes, you try let the images in your head form a comforting sketch of narumi lying in front of you, but from how much your body is drifting in and out of sleep, you're forced to peel them open, suppressing a massive yawn.
"narumi!" he shrieks into the call, making you wince, "i heard that! that was intentional right now, wasn't it?!"
you chuckle as you roll onto your other side. "no, gen. i love talking to my husband."
"shut up, you suck at being a wife."
and so you find yourself staying up for a few hours, fighting yourself from falling asleep while he turns on his game. he gives the occasional commentaries on how ugly a character looks or how his controller is drifting out of control, which you do your best to respond to, but by the third hour, you're genuinely seeing the fuzz of an exhausted mind and narumi's voice is growing more distant.
your chest slowly rises up and down as your body succumbs to rest, and somehow, narumi notices this when he realises your soft mumbles have come to a stop.
"narumi? oi," he calls, a little quieter than before. he pauses his game and leans into the silence of the call. "are you dead?"
he gets no response, so he scoffs, setting his controller down before he taps his phone to check the duration of the call. it reads four hours twenty-two minutes and it's also one in the morning.
"i'm letting you off this one time, narumi. we're pulling an all-nighter tomorrow," he scowls to himself, but that tiny tiny disappointment shrivels away in an instant when he whispers his rare i love you into the call.
you come back fully expecting to be met with an interrogation about the very secret bunnies you smuggled in, but instead—
“soshiro, what the hell are you doing.”
your boyfriend is lying on the floor with the bunnies. one is sitting on his chest. another is curled up by his head. he slowly turns to look at you, completely unbothered, as if you didn’t just catch him bonding with the creatures he was definitely supposed to scold you about.
“they like me,” he says simply, scratching behind the ears of the bunny on his chest. “i think they see me as their leader now.”
you blink. “their leader?”
he nods, completely serious. “yeah. look at them. they follow me.”
as if on cue, the bunny by his head twitches its nose and hops just a little closer to him. there’s just no way this is real.
“so you’re just… fine with this?” you ask, raising an eyebrow.
soshiro shrugs, finally sitting up, which makes the bunny on his chest slide onto his lap. “well, yeah. you already brought them in. might as well make sure they’re comfortable.”
you stare at him, waiting for something. a warning? a lecture? an anything?
instead, he picks up one of the bunnies and gently places it in your arms. “besides,” he says, smirking a little, “if anyone finds out, i’ll just say they’re yours. i’d never do something as reckless as bringing bunnies onto base, obviously.”
your jaw drops. “you little—”
but before you can finish, he’s already back on the floor, arms behind his head, letting the bunnies climb all over him.
Dad!Hoshina who was in awe when you gave birth to his son. Holding him so carefully and delicately, fearing he would drop him.
Dad!Hoshina who made sure you weren't burdened with being the only one to took care of the baby despite his job.
Dad!Hoshina who beamed for the rest of the day, going easy on his officers when he found out your son took his first steps.
Dad!Hoshina who instead teaches him how to say mommy first instead of daddy.
Dad!Hoshina who began taking him to work in the mornings to let you sleep in.
Dad!Hoshina who had your son strapper to his chest in a baby carrier, and was evantually walked in on.
Dad!Hoshina who doesn't bother when rumours of him being married and a father goes around. I mean they're all true so he shouldn't have to correct them.
Dad!Hoshina who at one point had to go on a mission so entrusted your son to Captain Mina Ashiro. And yes you scold him everyday for bringing in your child to work.
Dad!Hoshina who at one point lost him when he began to learn how to walk/run.
Dad!Hoshina who didn't even bat an eye when the internet started to suspect who the wife could be.
Dad!Hoshina who literally just blurted out his marriage with you on tv while you were watching him. Bonus points because your son was with him too.
I got inspo from this one fanart i found on pinterest; where hoshina had a baby carrier on with his child, trying to work. But now i can't find it..
"is it just me, or does the vice-captain seem angrier than usual?"
"maybe he's just fired up. there's a lot of yoju for him to take care of," iharu observes, scanning the emptied streets from the rooftop of an evacuated office building.
"you idiots really don't pay attention at all, do you?" shinomiya mumbles under her breath, pinching the bridge of her nose. the rest of the officers with her stare at her blankly. "it's thursday, geniuses."
"is there something special about kaiju appearances and days of the week?"
"not that i've heard of," kafka states, scratching his head with a finger. "did new research come out?"
"maybe it's because of the full moon," haruichi says and the other men look up at its soft shining light, nodding in understanding.
"that makes a lot of sense."
"but why would that make the vice-captain angry?"
"maybe he's a werewolf," iharu whispers with sincere worry. "maybe kafka's not the only shapeshifter in our division."
"it's date night, you meatheads! the vice-captain's supposed to be off-base and relaxing," shinomiya explains impatiently like it was written on the floors in fluorescent paint. "he's probably angry that the attack came right when he usually picks up..."
"picks up who?" the officers stiffen and quickly fall into perfect lines. you smile at their professionalism and try not to laugh at how quickly they changed their gossiping demeanors. "you know, officers, you should be careful about what you say in regards to the vice-captain."
"at ease," you command them. "you have nothing to apologize for. i'm simply warning you of what might have happened had it not been me passing by."
"understood, platoon leader," izumo confirms. "if we may," he continues slowly and you can see the rest of the officers eyeing him warily. "were we...correct in our assumption as to the reason for the vice-captain's mood?"
"the werewolf assumption or the assumption that only shinomiya was correct about?" everyone but shinomiya reddens, looking down sheepishly at the toes of their suits. the axe-wielder straightens her shoulders with a proud glint in her eyes. "to answer your question, it would be the latter," you answer with a poorly-hidden smirk. "he'd barely knocked on my door when the alarm sounded."
"oh, i bet the vice-cap was seething."
"he definitely was," you confirm, recalling the colorful curses he uttered as you both begrudgingly shed your nicer clothes for your combat suits. i was supposed to take off your clothes under different circumstances, he'd lamented. don't go thinking our night is canceled because of this. i'll finish them off quickly for you.
your relationship with hoshina was no secret, considering that he talked about you whenever he was given the chance. every kdf member on base knew you preferred to keep your romantic life as private as possible to avoid questions of power dynamics from higher-ranking officials. hoshina, however, either didn't listen or didn't seem to care. he happily declared thursday nights to be date nights, threatening intense punishment for the officers below him if they caused trouble while he was gone. a static-filled message from the scouting teams sounds in your earpiece and you dismiss the officers, moving to join the vice-captain at the front line.
judging by the slowly increasing trail of dead monsters covering the asphalt, you find hoshina easily as he cuts a clean slice through a fast-moving yoju. you change the frequency on your earpiece so that you're directly connected to his.
"someone's been busy," you remark, pulling the batons from your back and electrifying them with the switch by your thumb. they hum in your hands, electric blue lightning crackling in sync with the released power of your suit. "save some for me, would you?"
"any other day, i would," he replies and you hear him smile despite his annoyance. "but it took me three months to get those reservations, so i wanna finish this up quickly." another yoju falls, your boyfriend a phantom blur in the darkness.
"are you calling me slow?" your hand plants itself on your hip as you continue to watch him cut down enemies, barely moving from your place between the dead kaiju. "i can't believe my boyfriend thinks i'm slow. here i thought you were my biggest supporter."
"that's not what i said," he huffs, the slightest waver in his exhale the only evidence of exertion. "i'm just faster." he pauses for half a second to catch his breath, and you snag your chance to overtake him.
"hmm, i think i'll take over for a second, then." launching yourself from the ground, your feet run perpendicular against the wall of a crumbling building as you close the distance. you can feel hoshina's attention on you while you dodge the yoju's swinging limbs and sink your batons into the skin covering its core, electricity surging through its body as it falls with a loud thud. "how's that, mister i'm just faster?"
"cute," he admits, offering you a hand as you hop down from the monster's head. you're shoulder to shoulder facing opposite directions and catch the challenge in his eyes as you look at him over your shoulder. "but i know you can go harder."
"go your fastest then, soshiro," you dare. his throat bobs as he swallows thickly, a subtle sign that you'd thrown him off. "i'll do my best to keep up."
---
"so, this is not how i wanted date night to end up," he says through a mouth full of noodles, slurping them loudly from the bowl on your living room coffee table. "and i'm sorry we couldn't go to that fancy place."
"to be fair, the website didn't exactly update its hours immediately," you remind him. "how were we supposed to know the place got demolished in the attack?"
"true, but i made you get all dressed up for nothing," he grumbles, accidentally dropping a vegetable and splashing broth onto his face. "ow." you snort against your spoon, setting it down in your bowl and swiping over the corner of soshiro's mouth with a napkin. "this was my favorite shirt, too. worst date night ever."
"good thing there's this place called the cleaners, babe." he continues to frown despite your unending patience, letting you clean him up while he indulges in staring at you in your nice clothes. you could make anything look pretty, he thinks, staring unashamedly at you wrapped up in a blanket and covering your going-out clothes. "hey," you murmur, gently grabbing his chin and turning him to face you. "i don't mind."
"you don't mind what?"
"this kind of date night."
"but we could do this anytime," he mumbles, avoiding your eyes. you shake your head, pushing away your food and climbing into his lap, your legs on either side of his hips.
"no, we can't. we don't know how many times we get this in our line of work," you point out with an ache in your chest and he finally blinks up to look at you. "so i'm grateful for any time i get to spend with you, soshiro." his throat bobs again, but he manages to give you a small smile.
"you're too good for me, you know that?"
"if you say so," you shrug, leaning down until your lips barely brush his.
"but, you know," he murmurs and you pull back, staring into his starry eyes. "there's not a lot of nights," he inhales, reaching behind him to grab something from under the couch's throw pillow, "where i get to pull this move."
"what're you--ohmygod." he smirks at you as you blink down at the small box sitting in his hand, covered in crushed velvet and embroidered with gold. "that's-you didn't..."
"i did," he whispers, memorizing every inch of your shocked expression. "so," he pushes open the top half of the box with his thumb to reveal something that sparkles even in the dim lights of your apartment, "please--"
"yes!" you scream before he can finish his sentence, your excitement echoing off the walls as you both break out into wide grins. "holy shit, yes!"
"baby, i didn't even ask the whole question," he chuckles, giving in and slipping the ring on your finger. "what if that wasn't the question i was gonna ask?"
"i'd skewer your head with my batons," you smile sweetly and he hums, admiring the jeweled band in the light. "that was the question you were gonna ask, right?"
"of course, sweetheart," he assures you, finally leaning up to press his lips against yours. "you're the only one i'll ever let keep up with me."
"you gonna marry me, hoshina soshiro?"
"i'm gonna marry you so hard, the entire base will know." you fondly remember your conversation with the officers earlier in the night.
"darling, i think they already know."

you could only nod as a shade of red made itself noticeable on your cheeks, your gaze fixated on the stuffed bunny in your hands.
"i'm kinda embarrassed by it... someone my age shouldn't collect stuffed animals..."
all the plushies in your room are a confession of your little devotion, a secret you've been keeping away from your partner since you started dating a few months ago. he only found out because he came over unannounced and you weren't able to hide them in time.
"i know it's childish to collect them considering how old i am... and i was scared... that you might make fun of me."
he could only stare at you baffled. how many people before him made fun of you because you collect stuffed animals? who made you think, it is a childish hobby?
the fear in your eyes, the little tremble in your hands, seeing you so timid over something so small. it just broke his heart to see you like that.
"hey..." he stepped closer. one of his hands touched your cheek, the other reached for your arm.
„you don't need to feel ashamed. i think it's a very cute hobby."
your eyes widened.
"you don't think it's-"
"no it's not."
he pulled you against his chest, pressing your head against it. the hand on your cheek found its way on top of your head.
"why don't you introduce me to them? you've let me wait so long to meet them."

Your little legs ached from kneeling on the ground for so long. After many months of insistence, it was your first time accompanying your father to the Hoshina estate. You had sat next to him for hours, watching several of the Hoshina clan members duel each other on the art of the sword. The clank of wood and metal meeting was the most fascinating sound your five-year-old ears had heard until then. Your innocent eyes were equally captivated by the swift moves of men, who held their weapons with divine reverence.
This time, you weren’t there to learn. No, a child, especially a girl, like you wasn’t meant to learn the art of the sword, so you had to content yourself with just watching. Apparently, that day, the eldest of the Hoshina sons was about to perform a test to obtain a higher rank of some sort, or at least that was what your father communicated. You would have the honor to watch the family’s latest prodigy rise one step further. Although, as flattering as that privilege would be to anyone else, it was hard to contain the energy of a small child for such a long period, and your legs did really hurt.
Your father allowed you to roam around the dojo for a while, not before sending you a stern look, so now you found yourself admiring the huge gardens that surrounded the Hoshina manor. Maids and footmen move around the patios, mostly ignoring you or shooting you with strange looks. Not every day did they host a young girl dressed in a keikogi and hakama. As you got tired of the pretty flowers, you saw a strange butterfly land on one of them. Holding your breath, you stood firmly as you observed the beautiful animal flutter its wings before resuming its flight. Something in you felt compelled to follow it, and so you did, leaving behind the dojo.
It wasn’t long until you had lost the way and found yourself on a more deserted part of the manor, with no maids or footmen in sight. Everything was too big and scary for your little self. Just as tears started to form in the corners of your eyes, you heard faint noises coming from behind a corner. Tiptoeing around the building, you were met with an extraordinary vision. A boy, not older than you, with the cutest bowl cut and small eyes, dressed in a similar fashion to you, was holding up a sword almost bigger than himself. He swung the wooden stick around with a precision uncharacteristic of a child his age. He seemed too focused on practicing his movements to notice you.
Up and down. Left to right. Back and forth.
Your little eyes were glued to his form with childish admiration. Never had you met such a fascinating sight. Even as you had just spent hours watching the same movements being performed by more skilled men, you couldn’t tear your gaze away from the boy. Little by little, you approached the unidentified child, inexplicably drawn by him. He remained unaware of your presence until the sound of a twig snapping broke his concentration.
The boy’s head whipped around towards the origin of the sound, only to find you looking down at the snapped piece of wood. Wary of the unknown presence, he held up his sword in his small fists. Nevertheless, you didn’t look like you wanted to hurt him. Quite the contrary. Your eyes were fixed on the wooden sword, a twinkle of amazement in them combined with a sweet smile. Looking back and forth between you and the sword, the boy felt a fuzzy feeling on his tummy.
“Hi,” he said, lowering the weapon.
You jumped a little. “Hi!”
A couple seconds of silence ensued until the boy spoke again. “What is your name?”.
You hid a little more behind the building. “(Y/N)...”
The boy offered you a big smile. He was missing a front tooth. “I am Soshiro!”. Out of nowhere, he offered you the wooden sword. “Do ya wanna try?”
You gasped. Your father had forbidden you from coming near weapons, so it was the first time anyone had offered you to try. It was an unparalleled opportunity for you.
Slowly, you left your corner to approach Soshiro. He watched you intensely, that toothy grin still plastered on his face. You grabbed the weapon by the wooden handle. Its warmth probably came from Soshiro’s hold but, for you, it signified something deeper like the start of something new.
The beginning of your love for combat and for Hoshina Soshiro.
✦ . ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦
The door was almost flying from the hinges from the force of the knocking.
“Oh my god, I’m coming!” you shouted, not before letting out a groan.
You finished wrapping a towel around your hair. Stomping your way through your apartment, you approached the place where an elephant seemed to be trying to gain entry to your home. One breath. Two breaths. The door opened.
“Ya, next time try to keep the door intact,” you puffed. “Yer noisy”.
Hoshina’s jovial expression never abandoned him. “Yes, yes, good to see ya too. Now, would ya let me in? I’ve been waiting in this hall for ten minutes, have mercy on me”.
You glanced down to the plastic bag he carried on one hand. With a huff, you grabbed it away from him. “Fine, but only because I don’t want the beer to go cold”.
Hoshina inside your apartment was a very familiar sight to you. After decades of friendship, it was an unspoken agreement to try to spend almost every waking hour from the day together. Once you both reached adulthood, moved to the Third Division and got your own places, it became the norm to spend those free days in the company of the other, no matter how much you teased Hoshina about not wanting to hang out with him.
“Oh,” you let out after checking the bag, “you bought taiyakis too?”
“Yup,” he answered, laying on the couch, “in case ya had the idea of kicking me out for some reason”.
You glared at him. “Don’t believe yer safe yet. Chocolate or custard?”
“Chocolate and custard, of course”.
You beamed at him. “Nice”.
Hoshina knew you so well. Every crook and nanny. Well…almost.
You finished setting the snacks into plates and brought out the first bottles of beer from the fridge. Hoshina had already settled comfortably in your living room, arms crossed behind his head and feet against the armrest. Wearing a white shirt, black joggers with sneakers he had left on the doorstep, he looked as casual and divine as a human being could look. You debated between looking away and staring in awe, so you chose a more violent strategy.
“Get yer feet off my couch,” you kicked his ankle with your feet while balancing two plates of snacks on your hands. “I don’t want it smelling later”.
Hoshina whined. “I don’t wanna. Make me”.
With a sigh, you settled the last plates on the coffee table. After making sure nothing was at risk of falling off, you turned to your best friend of years, grabbed his feet by the ankles, and dragged them to the floor with enough force to almost push him off the couch completely.
With an indignant huff, he sat like a decent human being. “Geez woman, keep treating yer superiors like that and ya’ll see”.
You crossed your arms over your chest in defiance. “In this house, you ain’t no superior, Hoshina”.
The use of his name seemed to content him. “Fine, I’ll let it slide. Now, get yer butt in here so we can choose a movie”.
Rolling your eyes, you complied. At first, you kept your distance from Hoshina, opting to sit on the other side of the couch, but this didn’t seem to be the appropriate arrangement for him. In one swift movement, he grabbed you by the shoulders and dragged you to his side, almost snuggling against you. Your breath hitched for the shortest moment and your body tensed at the feeling of his side against yours. His smell was sweet and intoxicating.
Hoshina pulled a blanket over the both of you, trapping you even further into him. “So, what do ya want to watch, dear”.
That pet name again. You wanted to hide under the blanket. “I don’t care, you choose…”
He reached down to take a gulp from the open bottle of beer on the table. The elegant curve of his neck looked appetizing as he threw his head back to drink. You blinked away, afraid of being caught staring.
“Fine,” he put down the nearly empty bottle, “but I don’t want to hear you complaining if the movie is bad”.
Moments later, you both were watching one of the crappiest comedy movies humanity could have created. The writing was bad, the acting was bad, and the plot was nonexistent. Nevertheless, it was fun because Soshiro made it fun. He managed to crack jokes at every ridiculous scene, and with every bottle of beer that accumulated on your table, the laughter came easier to the both of you.
Things were always cheerful with Hoshina. It was impossible to stay quiet when it was just the both of you. No titles, no duties. No kaiju to fight, no civilians to protect. Plain old (Y/N) and Hoshina. You never regretted joining the Defense Force, but you always wondered about the what ifs. At the end, none of it mattered since you were still you and Hoshina was still Hoshina. It didn’t matter since you were still allowed to be at his side no matter what, and that was enough for you.
By the end of the movie, Hoshina sported a pretty flush on his face all the way down to his neck. You had lost count of how much you both had drank, but you were certain that Hoshina had pulled most of the weight, which was reflected on his sleepy figure.
Even in your tipsy state, you tried to be the responsible adult in the situation. You shook Hoshina by the shoulder in an attempt to wake him up. “Oi, Hoshina. Ya have to get up. Tomorrow we are on duty again!”.
He grumbled, still asleep. “Mm, (Y/N), just five more minutes”.
You tried a little harder. “No! We aren’t getting reprimanded because of you!”
You tried to nudge him a few more times to no luck. In defeat, you plopped yourself on the couch beside him. The alcohol was making your head fuzzy. Just as you were about to succumb to sleep, you felt something rest on your lap. When you opened your eyes, they were met with the sight of Soshiro’s head resting on you, soundly sleeping. No matter how many years you had spent at this man’s side, it was very rare to see him in such a vulnerable state.
Without giving yourself too much time to think, you placed a hand on the back of his head. His hair was so silky you almost felt jealous. Little by little, you started petting him with great care, feeling every strand of hair. His eyelids fluttered in his sleep, but his expression looked more relaxed than usual. From every strand of hair to the tiniest scar on his body, there wasn’t a single thing you didn’t love about Soshiro. You wanted to stay in the moment forever.
You pushed his bangs back to see more of his face. He felt like a cat cuddling in his owner’s lap.
He looks so cute, you thought. I should take a picture.
You looked for your phone, but it was out of reach and you didn’t want to disturb Hoshina in his sleep. It also felt too intimate, too loving. Something that should only live in your memory.
Maybe it was the alcohol getting to your head, or maybe it was the love for your best friend that had you feeling so warm. So warm that it loosened your tongue in the silence of your living room.
You sighted in defeat, looking at his face one more time. “How could I not fall for you when you are everything I want?”.
Your hand fell back to the couch, breaking the spell of intimacy. With great care as to not wake him up, you lifted Hoshina’s head from your lap and rested it on the couch. Resigned to your fate of getting scolded in the morning from bringing a hungover Vice-captain to base, you draped the blanket over him and started picking up the mess from drinking and eating.
Back to the regular schedule.
✦ . ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦
You had indeed been reprimanded by Captain Ashiro for being late (Hoshina’s fault for not bringing a change of clothes if he had planned to stay over and your fault for enabling his actions), which was more embarrassing given your positions as second and third in command in the base. Nevertheless, Captain Ashiro’s anger didn’t last long. It only took a few seconds after delivering your punishment to break into a smile.
In her words, “at least you both still know how to have fun”. Embarrassing.
It had been one week since the incident and it had been almost forgotten. Once again, you found yourself standing in front of Hoshina’s office, waiting to be let in. For some reason, he had summoned you to speak, failing to notify you of the purpose for the meeting.
“Platoon Leader (L/N) here, permission to enter, sir!” you announced yourself in front of the closed wooden doors of Hoshina’s office.
“C’mon in!” was the faint answer that filtered through.
You entered the familiar room. He was sitting down in his chair, reviewing some papers on his desk. You saluted your Vice-captain, and he dismissed you with a gesture of his hand.
“Gimme a couple of minutes, dear,” he didn’t lift his eyes from the paper while addressing you. “I called ya here, but this is an important matter. Please sit down while you wait”.
At his insistence, you sat on the chair across from him. While he continued reading, you tried to distract yourself with any knick knack or piece of stationery, but there was none. Hoshina was way too simplistic for that. You avoided staring at him, not wanting to distract him from his official duties, but you couldn’t help but stare at him once in a while for your own enjoyment.
You loved to see Hoshina concentrated. Given his relaxed and jovial nature, it was rare to see him focused on more mundane things (or that didn't involve combat). Even if he looked like the type of person who could never take his work seriously, you knew that there would never be anyone more dedicated to serving the country than Hoshina. With his natural sense of duty, he poured himself into everything he did, even when there was no one to watch his efforts. And with his history of disappointments due to his combat aptitudes, he was grateful to even have the chance to prove himself right.
After what felt like an eternity, Hoshina set down the stack of papers he had been reading. Leaning back into his chair, he didn’t look like his usual self. Still as handsome and as energetic as ever, but something felt amiss; like he had been reflecting long and hard about a difficult matter.
“Thank you for your hard work, sir” you bowed your head. “I hope our meeting won’t take too much of your time, sir”.
“Nonsense,” Hoshina waved his hand in front of both of your faces. “I’m the one who called ya here to discuss a private matter, (Y/N)”.
Now, that’s odd, you thought. What could possibly be so private that it required a personal conversation?
“Private, sir?” you repeated. “Private as in what aspect, if I may?”.
Red peeked under his eyelashes. “Private, as in concerning ya”.
That made you tense. You? Did something happen? Were you in trouble?
“I’m not sure if I’m following you, sir” you said, letting out a nervous laugh.
He pushed back from his chair to stand up. For a moment, he turned his back towards you to stare out from the window behind his desk. It appeared as if he was gathering confidence for something.
“(Y/N),” he called out, turning back to you, “please address me as a friend. I’m speaking to ya as that”.
This made you even more nervous. “Yes…Hoshina. What is the matter?”
“(Y/N), I have somethin’ to confess to ya”.
For some reason, those words hit you like a bucket of ice. Hoshina hadn’t said anything bad yet, but you didn’t like the somber expression on his face.
“Yes?” your voice barely above a whisper.
“I’ll say it as directly as I can, in the name of our friendship,” his red wine eyes never left yours. “On our day off…I heard what ya said”.
Your stomach dropped. “What…what do you mean, Hoshina?”
Hoshina kept his cool, but he let out a sigh. “(Y/N), I think we both know what I mean. When I was falling asleep on the couch, I heard what you said. I heard you say that you are in love with me”.
The truth is, in all the years you had been in love with Hoshina, you had imagined about a hundred times the moment he would find out about your feelings. In the best case scenario, you would carry on with your life without him ever knowing about your fondness for him and, hopefully, it would go away at one point. But now? Reality seemed worse than any worst case scenario you had conceived.
After a lifetime of leaning into your fighting instincts, you found yourself frozen for the first time. Silence covered the room like a fog. It was no use to feign ignorance, Hoshina was too smart for that.
“It’s okay, take your time, dear,” he placed one hand on his desk, leaning towards you. “It must be unexpected. We don’t have to talk about it…”.
“I’m so sorry,” you cut him. Your voice betrayed you by sounding too shaky and too watery. The truth was that you were shaking like a leaf. “I’m so sorry Hoshina, I…I…”
Hoshina couldn’t give you more than a sympathetic smile. “I told ya, it’s okay. If ya need time, we can table this conversation. Save it for another time”.
Even if you dreaded any conversation about this topic, you know your heart wouldn’t handle going through this one more time. “No, it’s okay. We can talk about it right now”.
Hoshina nodded and sat back on his chair, facing you completely. You had never felt so vulnerable before, even with him. “Okay, then. Let’s talk about it”.
You took a shaky breath and fixed your posture on the chair. “It is true. What I…said on that day is true. I didn’t mean for you to ever hear it. I thought you were asleep and…and I guess the booze…It was a long week, you know…”
You were stammering and tripping on your words. Whatever came out of your mouth sounded small and pathetic. This wasn’t you. You didn’t recognize yourself. The spiral under your feet was sucking you whole.
Even Hoshina must have felt embarrassment from your pitiful attitude. “(Y/N),” he interrupted and you shut up at once, “whether ya meant for me to hear it or not, what is done is done. Ya spilled yer secret and know we are here”.
You stared at him in silence while continued. “We have known each other all our lives. There’s barely any memory I have that yer not there with me. Even now as adults, you are still here with me, no matter how shitty it gets. That is something I appreciate more than anything, (Y/N), and I want ya to know it”.
You gulped. “But?”.
“But there’s a reason I always tell the rookies to never get attached to comrades,” he answered. “We live a life with too many risks to get sentimental over every loss. Ya bein’ my best friend above anyone else is already an exception to my own principle, and I don’t think we can afford more than that”.
If your world had been spinning at a dizzying pace until that moment, it stopped cold on its tracks. Something inside you started to simmer and boil, replacing the dread and embarrassment from earlier. You were angry. Enraged. Exceptions? Principles? What the hell was this dude talking about?
“Even with that into account,” Hoshina continued. His tone was still full of pity for you. “there is the matter about my own feelings. Still bein’ honest with you, I find it impossible in me to see you more as anything than my best friend since childhood, and there’s nothin’ I can do ‘bout that. I only hope that this incident won’t affect your performance around me, and much less our friendship”.
You had expected the rejection. It was natural to do so. But you didn’t expect the mental slap across the face. Every word hit you like a brick to the head, wounding you on more than a sentimental level. It was personal, and it did not feel good.
Hoshina continued looking at you softly. “That’s all I have to say, (Y/N). Do you have somethin’ ya wanna tell me?”.
You blinked twice and confusion took over your expression. “Yeah, one thing. What the fuck is wrong with you?!”.
Hoshina was taken aback. Hell, even you were taken aback. You didn’t consider yourself the timid type, but confrontation wasn’t something you looked forward to. You believed there was a time and place for everything, including anger and aggressiveness. How could anyone reach an agreement with others if not with patience and diplomacy? But right now? Right now nothing of that mattered.
“Huh?” was all that Hoshina could let out in shock.
You let out a humourless laugh. “It’s me who should be confused. Are you rejecting me or downright insulting me? Because you definitely are succeeding at both”.
Hoshina continued to sit in astonishment, opening and closing with mouth like a fish. “I don’t understand…”
You scoffed. “Let me put it simple for you, Hoshina. You are being a complete asshole. I’m obviously hurt as hell that you had to find out about my feelings this way, and even more that I’m being rejected by the person I love the most in this world. But being asked to not let this affect my performance like I’m some goddamned newbie or an idiot. I won’t tolerate being insulted to my face by being called a goddamned ‘exception’ to some goddamned ‘principle’ you decided to uphold. Our years of friendship and professional relationship are not deserving of that treatment”.
“I can see why ya might be upset,” apparently, Hoshina seemed to be catching up to your reasoning, “but I’m stating an objective truth”.
Fuck it. He understood nothing.
“Ya understand nothing,” you said with force. “The fact that you just said what you said tells me ya understand nothing, so let me make it clear: when you trust someone and believe in them, you don’t have to make exceptions to your principles for them”.
With that being said, you stood up with anger, causing your chair to scrape down the floor. The tension in the room was too much for you to handle. You had to get out, fast. Hoshina said nothing as you strode to the door of his office, not caring to look back at him. As you put your hand on the doorknob and opened it, you turned around. Hoshina now stood, still looking at you, with a dark expression. Bitterly, and almost sarcastically, you spoke again.
“One last thing, sir,” you tasted unspitted venom in your tongue. “You have requested of me to not let this incident affect my performance. I’m afraid that for the first time in all my years of service, I won’t be able to carry out your request, sir. After all, I am a woman who had her heart broken and a soldier who had her pride wounded. Good afternoon, Vice-captain Hoshina”.
You saluted your superior, and slammed the door shut.

Part 2
Was this a form of flirting?
If it was, you were in trouble.
The exchange of numbers with Hoshina had meant a few texts, short and perfunctory, regarding the time and place of the training session.
It was afterwards that the pictures started coming in.
He'd send you a photo every day, at variable times, of something he'd come across, whether a cute cat, or a new drink in the vending machine, a bandaged foot (not his own), a document that he'd underlined neatly in sparkly purple gel pen to annoy another vice-captain, or a cloud in the shape of a honju (debateable).
Of course, you sent him photos back.
You had a potted plant that looked like an angry moustached man at just the right angle.
He loved that one.
He now asked for updates on "Cadet Mario."
In all honesty, you'd never thought that your connection with Hoshina would progress beyond this. He'd spoken to you, that time on the roof, about the warnings he'd given his own squad on forming such bonds.
You supposed that your job meant that you were less at risk, not being in the direct line of fire, but Hoshina was the kind to think about the impact on others if something were to happen to him.
So you did wonder about the fact that he had let this continue to the extent that it had, that he'd opened up these lines of communication, that he'd let you feel something from his end that couldn't be dismissed as mere friendship.
It was as if he'd left a trail of breadcrumbs for you to follow through winding woods, as was his custom, allowing you to be the one to find a circuitous, but complete, route to the answer.
Speaking of breadcrumbs ...
Your phone buzzed with a new message from him.
Towelling off your hair, you opened it to find a photo of a scene that looked highly familiar. It was the section of roof where you'd taken tea with him before.
Beneath the photo, a single question mark.
He was asking you to join him.
On some level, you hated that you instinctually understood each of these markers he laid down for you, a gleaming series of neon arrows that nobody else seemed privy to.
Of course, you followed.
On the roof, it was always chilly. You found him in the same spot as before, looking quite comfortable in his nook.
He had a blanket draped over his shoulders, the teapot and cups laid out before him, along with a flask of what you presumed to be boiling water.
The flask was sealed. He'd waited for you.
As you approached, he sat up, grinning.
"So, you showed up."
As if he hadn't known that you would.
You seated yourself opposite, gesturing with your chin at the teapot.
"What have you got there?"
"Nothing special this time. But it's good."
He let the tea steep before he poured you a cup. You warmed your fingers against it, taking a sip.
"It's - "
"I know," he interrupted. "Can tell from the way your eyes light up. That's when you really like something."
A tightness seemed to be growing in your throat.
"You notice things like that?"
"I notice everything. Not a single thing escapes me."
"Do you think that's a good thing?"
He didn't answer, but took a drink himself.
He set the cup down.
"What do you do, 'bout a thing you notice that can't be changed?"
You smiled.
"You of all people don't know the answer?"
He was looking at you now, a rare moment of completely serious regard.
"Gotta confess, I'm kinda stumped."
"You adapt."
He laughed, and though he'd done it dozens of times in your presence, you decided that you'd never get tired of hearing it.
"Adapt, huh? Shoulda known. I'm a stubborn bastard. That sort of thing doesn't come easily to me. If it did, I'd have chosen a different weapon ages ago."
The wind gusted between you, catching the ends of his hair.
He held out a hand to you, and for all of his teasing, for all of his charm, for all of the sharp edges that slid beneath the skin, there was something almost vulnerable about the motion, as if he was not quite sure if you'd accept.
This uncertainty was precisely why you didn't hesitate.
You made your way over, crouching to sit beside him. He draped the blanket over your shoulders, one arm tucking securely around your waist as he drew you close.
He didn't speak for a moment, as if processing the sensation of you against him.
Then his breath stirred the hairs curling around your ear, warmer than even the woollen covering around you.
"This is nice."
"It is."
"Better than sparring?"
"If I answer that honestly, will you - "
You cut off at the sensation of his lips against your cheek, softer than your wildest imaginings.
He spoke against your skin.
"Continue."
" ... um, will you be less - "
Another kiss, lower.
"Mhmm."
"... less hard on me than last ti -"
This one was right at the corner of your mouth, hot and wet.
"Can't make no promises."
There was no denying the huskiness that had crept into his voice, the way his fingers tightened on your waist. His breath washed over your lips as you turned your head to face him.
When his mouth slotted over yours, you suddenly realised why he'd chosen this particular tea.
It was the same one you'd gifted him the first time he'd come over to the control room, brewed in the small kitchenette.
You could taste it as he pried you open, in the tracing of his tongue against your own and the prick of his teeth against your lower lip, silk and steel, hungry and gentle.
Hoshina kissed like a gentleman on the verge of surrendering to rougher urges. Considerate, sweet, courteous even, but you didn't miss the way his breathing quickened, the way his fingers flexed against your hip, the way he delved deeper as if he needed more, more, more of you.
When you parted, your eyes fluttered open, taking in the sight of him watching you.
"Is that good?"
"Very."
This time, you took the initiative, tilting your head, reveling in the hush that seemed to fall when you lost yourself in him.
A series of kisses, the soft touch of your mouth to his, delicate as the opening of one flower to another, before he deepened it again.
This was how you reached for the parts of him that he didn't readily show, a message spelled in the cocoon of intimacy built around the both of you on this rooftop.
You spoke wordless promises to him, as you cradled the side of his face, fingers running up into his hair. It was just as soft as you'd imagined, and you felt a surge of tenderness rise in you at the thought that he was so strong in every other sense, but never infallible.
He paused to breathe against the side of your neck, brow tense and furrowed with the focus he held on what you made him feel.
His hand settled on the small of your back, asking a question.
"Stay with me a bit longer?"
"Of course."
When your head sank into the space between his shoulder and cheek, you realised that nothing had ever felt this natural.
Neither of you set much store by labels.
Your days continued much the same as always, apart from the dreaded blare of sirens that accompanied a kaiju sighting.
There was, however, a small, delicious warmth you held inside yourself all day, like the heat imparted from a teacup into chilled palms.
Even if you didn't get to see him, he never failed to check in, with either a message or a call, if time allowed for it.
You supposed that most would barely call this a relationship of any kind, but you knew that your bond with him went a little beyond that.
Oh, there were copious amounts of teasing and verbal sparring, all Hoshina's specialties, but there was also a studied consideration, a mindfulness of everything that you were, the prelude to the kind of devotion that you couldn't afford to dwell on too deeply.
You were already in danger, and you knew it.
On this particular evening, considering the fact that there'd been no emergencies, Hoshina was going to drop by your apartment later.
As you were part of the shift work monitoring and research crew, it wasn't necessary for your lodgings to be on site.
Not that you'd gone far. Your apartment was a stone's throw from the base itself, within walking distance.
The weather was growing cooler, and you opened the door to Soshiro in a warm jacket and jeans, a purple scarf wrapped snugly up to his ears.
His cheeks were slightly flushed from the brisk walk he must have taken here, and his snaggle tooth peeked out from within his growing smile.
You waited, with what little patience you possessed, for him to step inside, helping him with the bags he carried, before turning and wrapping your arms around him tightly.
A soft huff of amusement blew through your hair.
"Couldn't wait to see me?"
You shook your head.
If you told him the truth, that he looked positively adorable, and wholly unlike the trained kaiju-killer you knew him to be, you'd probably be subjected to another brutal 'sparring session' as a 'gentle reminder.'
Releasing him reluctantly, you sniffed at the air.
"You brought ... spicy cod stew, braised ribs and grilled mushrooms and ... is that red bean mochi?"
He whistled, fingers forming an 'L' beneath his chin.
"Right, right, right and ... right again. What are you scientists made of?"
"Greed. Pure greed."
"I shoulda known. You're so greedy for my kisses too."
That was your cue.
You ignored it and headed for the bags of food, starting to unpack.
It took a whole thirty seconds.
"I said that you're so greedy for my kisses too."
"You did?"
Two wiry, powerful arms swept you away from the food that had dared to steal your attention.
Laughing breathlessly, you were subjected to a merciless series of pinches and pokes to the lower back before he relented.
"Let this be a lesson, Cadet Smartass."
"Consider it taught, Vice Captain Handsome."
"That ain't gonna fly. Make it up to me. Now."
God, you loved it when he got bossy like this.
You started with light pecks to his nose, still cold from the brisk air outside. Placing your hands on his cheeks, you felt the slow release of tension with each exhale, the set of those lean shoulders gradually growing less rigid beneath the soothing movement of your palms.
Although he didn't look like it, Soshiro carried the weight of his reponsibilities in ways that only those closest to him would know.
He uttered a low murmur of satisfaction, the echoes of which vibrated through his chest.
Nose brushing against yours, he held your gaze, one of those moments when the passage of time seemed to cease around the carefully constructed, fragile haven you both existed in.
Only then did he tilt his head, maintaining eye contact to the very last second.
By now, no other part of him touched you, even though you were this close. It was as if he wanted to centre all of the sensation on this first of many kisses for the evening, right here, where you were connected.
The faint line of separation between your bodies didn't last long.
He was slow, thorough, tasting you as if savouring some hard-won delicacy.
By the time you both came up for air, your chest was rising and falling in uneven rhythm against his, hands tangled in his hair, just the way he liked.
He offered that pleased half-smile, the one that twisted a tight knot in your chest.
"Now that's more like it."
"To your satisfaction, sir?"
"Hmm."
"No?"
He tapped his cheek with a finger.
"Maybe one more. For now."
Smiling, you complied.
You eat at the kotatsu, knees pressed together as he insists on serving up, as he always does.
"Spent the whole afternoon answering emails."
"Let me guess, you hit up the training room right after because you were restless?"
He shifted around on his cushion.
"Maybe."
"I'm waiting for the day when someone's ballsy enough to complain about the amount of time you spend in there."
He raised a cheerful finger of admonishment.
"Nobody's that stupid."
"And how would you handle such a complaint, Vice Captain?"
"I'd - "
"Professionally, I mean. Without violence."
"You're such a moodkiller. Hmm. I'd invite them to use the room with me. Maybe spar a little, to help them along!"
"This is your non-violent solution?"
"Sparring is like friendship."
You choked on your noodles.
"Come again?"
"Many ups and downs, and sometimes, you just need to beat the problems out of the way with your fists."
"I think you're the only person who can say this with a straight face."
You paused, expression growing sly.
"What about our sparring sessions? Is that a form of friendship too?"
You yelped as you received a pinch beneath the table.
"Nah, that's different."
"Different how?"
"You sure you wanna have this conversation while we're eating?"
"Go on."
"Well." He cleared his throat. "I've never been bombarded with dad jokes while sparring before, so that's a first."
"My sparkling sense of humour, is it?"
Soshiro sipped his water before shooting you a look that told you just how close you were skirting to danger.
"I also like it when you're all flushed and sweaty."
"Wait - "
"And begging me to stop with tears in your eyes."
"Soshiro - "
"I like when your voice gets all breathy-like, and your hair falls into your face."
"Ah, okay. You talk big game for such a sweet, considerate - "
He was crawling towards you now, and you backed away, helpless with laughter.
"I'm sweet and considerate? Oh, darlin', let me show you how - "
"The food - "
"Can wait."
When Soshiro wants you, he makes it known in a dozen different ways.
His very presence in your space adds a charge to the air, like the distant rumble before a thunderstorm comes sweeping in.
You can sense it in the lowered pitch of his voice, in the way his touch lingers, soft and inviting, drawing subtle patterns across your skin.
In spite of all of his teasing, intimacy was not something that came easily to him. With all the time he'd spent guarding his heart against further disappointment, against hope, against the pain of losing others, he'd constructed a formidable wall around the sentimental parts of himself.
The forging of your bond with him leaned heavily on how you respected those boundaries, never pushing too hard, allowing him space and the ability to come to you when he needed.
He showed his appreciation for this clearly, in ways that tugged at some deep-seated instinct to treasure him, spoil him, give him all of yourself when you were together.
On one such evening, he'd been lounging on his back not far from where you sat, cushions piled beneath him, one ankle propped high.
Both of you were occupied with your own reading, Soshiro balancing a slim volume on his raised knee.
There was a faint smile playing at his lips as he read, one that invoked a sense of curiosity.
Catching your look, he raised an eyebrow.
"Yeah?"
"What are you reading?"
"Wouldn't you like to know."
"Oh, come on - "
His glance flicked from the book to you, and back.
"Why don't you come over here and see?"
Your eyes narrowed.
"What are you up to?"
He lowered the page he was on, tantalizingly out of reach, offering you a brief glimpse.
"My sweetheart doesn't trust me? That kinda hurts."
"Now you're just playing dirty."
Amusement rising, you shuffled across to him, attempting to ignore the self-satisfied expression he now wore.
"All right, now show me."
"A translation of Piedra de Sol" he drawled in your ear, as you settled beside him, "I picked it up in a second hand book store last week."
He shifted against you, nose brushing yours as he turned his head, the book passing over into your own hands.
"Here. Read for me."
A little confused as to the sudden switch to compliance, you leaned back, starting to read where his pointing finger guided you.
"I travel my way through galleries of sound, I flow among echoing presences ... "
You trailed off as his head fell against your shoulder.
"I've only just started and you're swooning already?"
He remained silent, and you continued, a small smile playing on your lips. Soshiro liked listening to your voice echoing in the cosy silence of the apartment at times.
" ... oh forest of pillars that are enchanted, through arches of light I travel into the corridors of a diaphonous fall ... "
He let out a sigh, fingers trailing over your midriff.
"... I travel your body, like the world, your belly is a plaza full of sun ... "
Oh. What a honeyed trap.
Was this why he'd been smiling?
" ... your breasts two churches where blood performs its own parallel rites ... "
Your voice faltered slightly and he raised his head, nuzzling the side of your neck.
"Ain't it too early for you to be gettin' all flustered?"
"You chose this one on purpose, didn't you?"
The roughened tips of his fingers tilt your head toward him, and the touch of his lips is brief on yours, no more than a taste.
"Maybe. What's wrong with lettin' you know all ... the places ... I want ... to explore?"
Each of these phrases is puntuated by another small peck. Soshiro's voice has deepened to a low rumble, the kind that serves as a prelude to when he's truly taken by you.
Your head moves forward, chasing another kiss, but he stops you with a finger to the lips.
If you could enshrine this moment in the shimmering haze of memory, it would be no less vivid.
In the dim light, there is a crushing intimacy to the way he looks at you. His natural mischief is amplified to something many-layered, fraught with endless possibility.
You want to place kisses at the corners of his eyes, worship the tracery of veins on those strong, sinewy arms, brush his hair back until his forehead is bared to your adoration.
You know, however, that this time you're surrendering control to him.
Biting your lip, you ask a wordless question with the slight lowering of your eyelids.
Soshiro's smile widens.
Now, he descends, and you feel the splay of his hands over your sides, running up beneath the thin material of your sleep shirt.
You utter a short gasp as his head slips beneath, face burying itself between your breasts.
He stills for a minute, and you know what's expected of you.
Raising the book, you resume, voice tight and breathless with anticipation.
" ... my glances cover you like ivy, you are a city the sea assaults ..."
He rucks the shirt upward, the hypnotic depth of his gaze making it hellishly difficult to focus as his mouth comes down around your nipple, surrounding it in intoxicating wet heat.
You inhale sharply, clutching at the cover, unable to help the hitch in your voice as he works sinfully over sensitive flesh.
Releasing you, he exhales hot against your dampened skin.
"Wanna hear more, sweet thing. Come on."
"... a stretch of ramparts ... split by light in two ... halves ... the colour of peaches ... ah!"
A short, sharp cry, uncontrollable, as his canines press into and tug on your other breast, tongue laving with heady abandon over the swell of it.
"... a ... d - domain of ... salt, rocks and birds ... mmm ... under ... the ... rule ...."
Punctuated by soft gasps, your hand flies down from its convulsive hold on the volume, threading through his hair as he growls low with approval.
Your hips are bucking upward of their own accord, as if connected by some puppeteer's invisible string to each lick, each sink of his teeth followed by soft suckling.
"... dressed ... ah ... in the colour ... o - of my desires ... "
The book almost falls from your grasp as he suddenly shifts lower, those large hands cupping your breasts and giving a squeeze as he plants heated kisses down, down, down to your navel.
"Soshi - "
"C'mon, lemme hear you."
"Please, I - "
Your legs fall open as his shoulders push your thighs apart. He pauses, stopping agonizingly short of the softness of your inner thigh.
Breath fans out, hot and shockingly intimate, between your legs, the thin material of your underwear the only barrier between you and him.
When he speaks, you feel the heavy, purposeful intent of each word, almost as if his fingers are already breaching you.
"Wanna stop there, sweetheart? I can smell how much she wants a taste."
You body jerks in response, held down by the immovable circle of his arms around your upper thighs. The corded strain of his biceps press into you.
Arching your back, you plunge headlong into your final refrain.
"I travel your eyes, like the sea ... tigers drink their dreams in those ... "
You cut off, breathing heavily as he tugs down your underwear, leaving you bare under his scrutiny.
He looks positively ravenous now, a slow unspooling of the threads of control, easing the reigns from his hands.
This is your Soshiro, stubborn, proud, lit from within with some unholy hunger for life, for you.
Your voice brings his eyes up to yours, each now hypnotized by the other in equal parts.
"The hummingbird burns in those flames ... "
His gaze never wavers from yours, dark and delightful as he lowers his head, one languid swipe of his tongue parting your folds like petals.
The book really does slip from your grasp now, landing on your stomach with a sharp slap.
Soshiro, spreads you with two fingers, placing his mouth over your clitoris. He exerts a soft suction, agonisingly gentle, not nearly enough.
Ragged, soft moans escaping you, the book is retrieved with shaking fingers.
"I - I travel ... "
The moment you start up again, he pushes his nose forward, inhaling deeply as he laps at you with firm, eager strokes.
Your lower body is held completely open, at his mercy by the strength he now exerts over you.
" ... travel ... your forehead ... like ... ah! ... like the .... moon ... "
Your resilience, even in the face of his relentless onslaught on your most sensitive parts, spurs him on even more.
He groans against you, tongue pushing further, slow, deep thrusts that spear you.
Soshiro is too lost in the feel of you to keep up the torturous, pleasurable game, one hand flicking up to jerk the book from your grasp.
He wants to see you right now, as you come apart under him, no shield of hushed words to obscure his vision.
One of your hands finds its way into his hair, and you bite down on the length of your finger, watching as the muscles of his shoulders ripple, as sweat beads his brow, as the glistening of your own arousal smears over the sides of his mouth.
Here, all the faint remains of his proper self, the public-facing, professional soldier that he is, can be stripped away, the raw heat of him bared to you.
He loves sweet desserts, snowy evenings in, the rustle of pages beneath the turn of his thumb and the muted hum of his blades in his hands.
He also loves to pleasure you, and receive pleasure in return, to lose himself in ways that only a battle can otherwise allow him to, to shrug off the weight of expectation that has dogged his steps for an eternity and simply be whoever he desires to be.
The immensity of this realisation is what drives you to greater lengths to be here when he needs you, to give so freely of yourself, to give everything he deserves, because he always repays it tenfold in the way he burns, just for you.
His head dips lower, and now you finally break the electric eye contact that lances through you like a golden arrow, mouth falling open as he presses the flat of his tongue against your clitoris and pushes, probing, circling.
Your orgasm wrenches out of you, as if you're some primeval crack in the earth, molten and white hot, body quivering in helpless ecstasy as he holds you tightly in place, even now.
It's complete surrender, loud cries of wordless wonder in the rainforest of humid splendour that he brings you to each time, sacrificed and taken apart in the loving, ferocious jaws of a greater, sinuous beast.
You're distantly aware of the rise and fall of your chest, ragged breathing that you recognise as your own, the slick press of his lips against your thighs, soothing you, grounding you.
Lean and lithe, he crawls over you, one thumb sliding down across your cheek. He kisses you, exultant in the return of your essence; a benediction.
If you could find the ability to speak, you'd praise him.
For now, you're content with the way his mouth curves against yours, delicate and knowing.
You're off the hook for now, swimming the deep, thrumming currents of the hazy aftershock, but he's not done with you yet.
Soshiro fucks like he fights, warm, fierce, probing each weak point until you claw at him, taking you apart from the inside.
The futon edges along the floor as he takes you with abandon, with none of the finesse he started with.
You are his opponent, his lover, the dance between your bodies playing out in this shadowed room as raw and primal as any battle he's fought.
You're not even aware of the noises that are escaping your throat, flying up to the empty expanse of the ceiling as he changes his pace, alternating slow, deep thrusts with the rapid, shallow beat of his body against yours.
There is nothing calculated here. Soshiro operates on pure, animalistic instinct, blended with the art of his own supreme physicality.
He knows your body so well, the way to bring you to the brink and then tug you back into a deep well of formless pleasure.
He never takes his eyes from you, as he must record, on some inner spool of memory, the way you look beneath him, tears tracking down into your hair, mouth open, breathless pleas and sharp, agonised cries, the swaying lift of your breasts with each eager push of his hips.
His feet press down into the floor, anchoring you both as he hoists your legs higher around his waist.
You can feel him so deep now, your eyes snapping open, a soft, panicked noise fluttering out of you as he grinds in a slow circle, dragging against your over-sensitized clitoris.
Your second orgasm of the night floods through you in an endless series of waves, each driving the breath from your lungs as your fingers dig into his shoulders, as if the solid heat of him would keep you staked here, at the edge of sanity.
The way he looks now, tensing, tendons standing out in his neck as he comes with a near-bestial snap of his hips, hissing and groaning as, for just a moment, you feel the full, unbridled force of his strength, is nothing short of divine.
You love seeing him like this, your best kept secret.
In the golden light that filters from the neighbouring room, you run your hands over the carved planes of his body, damp with sweat made between the both of you.
He rolls to the side, drawing you close in the crook of his arm, your breath mingling as you both recover.
Soshiro loves like he fights, giving every last inch of himself, even now as he whispers to you, fingers threading through your hair, so many secrets that the world will never hear.
A/N: I just know this man eats pussy like it's his last supper. Hope you enjoyed it! I plan to possibly write more parts because I have so many ideas for Hoshina, lol.
A link to the poem, Piedra de Sol, by Octavio Paz (translated), can be found here. One of my favourites, and one I think Hoshina would appreciate.
