the room is dark. the blinds haven’t moved an inch for the past few days.
how much time has even passed?
two days? a week? or was it almost a month?
slowly, you push yourself up. everything feels dizzy as you grab for your phone. you don’t even get to check the time before the device dies in your hand.
you let yourself fall back on your bed, staring at the ceiling.
when was the last time he actually came to visit?
visiting was the right word. he was more on base than actually in the apartment you both intended to share.
you basically live alone, in between Yamazon boxes and empty instant noodle cups and he is just a visitor in his own walls.
only checking in from time to time, sending enough money to live a decent life.
he even suggested that you quit and stay home.
at first, it was nice. having a whole lot of free time, enough money to do cool things and enough space to let the soul dance and dangle around.
it was too nice to be real.
and slowly but steadily, that so-called freedom turned into something rotten inside.
now, every day is the same.
waking up around noon. hands immediately grab for the phone. lying around some more for a few hours before standing up and preparing a cup of instant noodles. eating in bed, the sheets not having been changed for weeks. you haven’t even changed your clothes for the past few days.
done eating, another scrolling session starts.
you don’t have the power or the will to do anything other than mindlessly scroll through short-form videos on various platforms. now and then you dare to switch the app, only to be hit with the same mindless, brain-rotting content.
only long after midnight are you finally able to fall asleep.
the days went on like that, the piles of cups and cartons growing and your will to live only fading more into something you couldn’t quite point to. a black hole you’ve created yourself, gulping everything joyous down right away.
it was everything but pleasant, everything a human wouldn’t want from life. but it was comfortable. and it was yours in some way.
you could hear the front door crack open. and a pissed voice screaming around.
the only thing you would have needed right now is noise.
with a sigh, you sit up, toss the blanket off your legs and let your legs dangle down the bed.
“here you are!! Why does it stink in here like that? What have you—“ narumi’s voice dies off completely as he sees you barely keeping yourself up on the bed. deep, dark circles are making themselves visible on your face as you turn your head around, trying to smile at him. that smile couldn’t even be called a smile but more of a neutral expression, trying not to look like you just rose from the dead.
“hey, gen. welcome home—“ a yawn swallows the last few letters of your sentence.
an arm lazily falling on your face, trying to keep the yawn down.
narumi clears a path through the piles of trash in the room before kneeling in front of you.
“it seems like a lot happened when I was away. wanna order something?”
you could only nod. smiling still feels too hard. but he deems it a response good enough. he stands up again while fishing out his phone from his back pocket and dialling a number of one of the first numbers popping up after searching for pizza.
he joins you in bed to eat. not making a big fuss to go to the kitchen or sit down at a table.
it’s the first time in months that something else has hit your taste buds other than the taste of instant noodles. rich flavour spreads across your tongue.
the pizza disappeared in minutes out of your carton, not leaving a crumb behind.
you stare at the fat-stained carton before looking up to narumi.
“it’s been a while… since you came over…”
you look down again, not sure if looking at him for too long would be okay.
“wanna play some smash?” he asks before shoving the last bit of pizza in his mouth.
“i brought the console with me,” he mumbles with his mouth full. of course he did.
you nod. not really present but it is good enough of a nod for the man.
he stands up from the bed, walking to his bag to pull out the massive bs5. not long after, it’s plugged into the dusty TV in your room.
you wonder if it still even works after how long you haven’t turned on that thing.
narumi climbs back on the bed and shoves a second controller in your hand.
you couldn’t even tell how long you’ve played. but long enough to distract you from the mess around you.
when you grab for your phone again, you remember the dead battery and finally plug it in.
you lay back again, staring at the ceiling once more this day.
this time Narumi lies beside you, staring at the ceiling just like you.
“you know what would be nice now?” his deep voice broke the silence.
you hum, not moving an inch from your spot.
only when the mattress beside you shifts, your head moves to look at him sitting on the edge of the mattress. before you could blink, you already stand on your feet and gen is searching around in your closet, trying not to step on one of the many empty cups.
after fishing out a good enough outfit, he places it down on the mattress, pulling you to the bathroom afterwards.
he drags you under the shower, helping you to rub you off completely and wash your hair.
after lying around a little to try out and blow-drying both of your hair, narumi shoves the fresh clothes in your hand and dresses himself up.
it’s already night when you step out. and it’s also cold. not extremely cold. but cold enough to wish for a jacket.
but you couldn’t think long about how cold it was, as narumi already drags you in a random direction.
you look around. the neighbourhood hasn’t changed since the last time you stepped outside. at least nothing big. the whole big picture has stayed the same.
narumi pulls you after him for a while, stopping not far outside the city. a patch of grass inviting to lie down.
both of you do that. just like earlier in your apartment. but this time you don’t stare at the ceiling, but at a densely packed blanket of stars.
“it’s cold,” you complain.
“you’re always are,” but he sits up and peels his own jacket down, throwing it over your body.
he let himself plump in the grass again, staring at the stars again.
“thank you for bringing me here,” you mumble, not really loud enough to be heard. to your expectation, you don’t get an answer.
if he had heard that, narumi would have protested but would have taken and bathed in the compliment like he reinvented the wheel. your ears only pick up a faint snore from beside you.
and as you turn around, your gaze falls on a narumi already fallen asleep.
you pull yourself closer to him and put your head on his shoulder, looking up to the stars again.
