Students of all ages are gearing up for school and many of us military spouses are always looking for ways to make our lives a little bit easier. That’s why we researched and tested some of this year’s hottest educational and organizational apps to deliver our top five favorites. Whether it’s you or your military kid heading to class, it’s worth checking these out.
1. iHomework
iHomework is a comprehensive organization app that helps you (or your student) keep track of assignments, schedule and course information. It even has a special feature that will calculate your future grade using a simple point-based grading system or a “highly customizable weighted system.” Newly integrated with Questia, an online research and paper writing resource, iHomework gives you access to an extensive library without ever having to leave the app. This app is user friendly, recommended for students in junior high and up. ($1.99, iOS)
2. WolframAlpha
WolframAlpha is a revolutionary (and totally cool!) app that “uses its vast collection of algorithms and data to compute answers and generate reports for you.” The user is able to research everything from socioeconomic data to complex math problems. Have a question on your trigonometry homework? Simply type in the question into the search bar and WolframAlpha will quickly pull through its sources to compute the answers. Procrastinating? WolframAlpha will help you look up random trivia and even calculate calories. This was a tester favorite! ($2.99 Android, iOS)
3. SimpleMind
Have you ever known you had a huge paper due, but when you sit down to the computer, you can’t get past staring at the blank screen? SimpleMind can help. SimpleMind is a ‘mind mapping tool’ that helps to organize and ‘map’ your brainstorm sessions. Type in your ideas, and SimpleMind will create charts that allow you to drag your ideas around in order to outline your thoughts. Best part? It’s free.
(Free, Android, iOS)
4. Evernote
Evernote has been described as the “modern workspace,” that syncs all your devices together so that when you leave the office, the classroom or your computer, you can carry all your notes with you in your phone. With Evernote, you can write notes and checklists, organize web articles, documents and photographs and even discusss your work with others without leaving the application. Add your friends or your spouse, and you can even save recipes and meal plan–it’s truly all in one. (Andriod, iOS, prices vary)
5. CourseSmart
Do you, or does your school, offer a subscription to e-textbooks? Well, CourseSmart is a companion to e-books that grants you access to more than 7,000 textbooks on your phone–for free. In CourseSmart eTextbooks, you can quickly access your textbooks, add, edit and view notes as you study and synchronize your notes and highlights across all reading systems. (Free, iOS, Android)
