March 7, 1987 – May 15, 2005 Raced from 1989-1991 Thoroughbred Stallion - United States
I couldn't find any information on why he was given his name.
This champion sprinter never ran farther then a mile, coming in third in his debut and winning his next start out. That win propelled him on an eight race winning streak. His last race as a juvenile was a win in the Morven Breeders' Cup Stakes in his third start. At three he won the Spectacular Bid Stakes, Hutcheson Stakes, Swale Stakes, Lafayette Stakes, Derby Trial Stakes and Withers Stakes. He finally tasted defeat in the Metropolitan Handicap, losing bya neck to Criminal Type, with Easy Goer finishing third behind him. He would go on to win three more stakes that year, the Sheridan Stakes, King's Bishop Stakes and Jerome Handicap. His final race in 1990 was a 6th place finish in the Vosburgh Stakes. He was pointing to the Breeders Cup that year, but was injured.
He returned as a four year old in 1991, starting off with two second places in the Deputy Minister Handicap and Commonwealth Breeders' Cup Stakes. He won the Carter Handicap but then went on to finish a disappointing 8th in the Metropolitan Handicap. Housebuster came back to win three final times, in the Frank J. De Francis Memorial Dash Stakes Forego Handicap and Vosburgh Stakes. He entered into the 1991 Breeders Cup Sprint but finished 9th, with an injury. He tore his right front quarter when leaving the starting gate, but continued to run and later tore his left front ligament. He retired from racing with the injury, making a full recovery with a little TLC.
He originally stood stud at Jonabell Farm, siring a few good runners. But his fee dropped after a while and he was purchased by interests in Japan's East Stud in 1998. In 2001 he was sold back to America and stood at The Blue Ridge Farm from 2002-2004 before he was moved again to stand at O'Sullivan Farms in 2005, passing away in May of that year. Among his many stud farms he called home, he was also shuttled to New Zealand and Argentina. Among his top progeny are Hong Kong horse of the year and champion miler Electronic Unicorn, European G1 winner Bahamian Pirate, and US millionaire Morluc.
Housebuster earned Eclipse awards in 1990 and 1991 for Champion Sprinter, and he was inducted into the Horse Racing Hall of Fame in 2013.
