My 8th birthday party was Huey Lewis themed. I only invited my best friend at the time because at my 7th grade birthday party everyone begged to spend the night and my mom let them and I didn’t even like most of them. They were the bitches I promise. Anyway, my best friend’s parents were best friends with my parents so they came too. Best. Party. Ever.

At some point the adults decided to drive 8hrs to go snow skiing in New Mexico. Everyone from my hometown had a place or knew someone that had a place in Red River so it wasn’t that uncommon. I remember getting to sit in the way-way back and getting to color in a makeshift tent on the way there. Then my dad ended up staying up all night playing with his nunchakus and listening to this and money for nothing. He was actually really fucking good too. I think my mom and my moms friend just cleaned the entire time. We went skating. We did a lot. It was almost like they were on good drugs or something 🤷🏻‍♀️👀

I always talk about the part when they lost their shit and went all Pentecostal but I never talk about how good it was before that. Probably dysfunctional. Probably ended right on time. The universe must have known they were going to need something to believe in once I hit about fourteen. I mean feral can’t raise feral. Unfortunately.
